The simplest way to move Firefox bookmarks to a new computer is to export them as an HTML file on the old computer, transfer that file, and import it on the new one. If you want bookmarks to stay synchronized across both computers, use Firefox Sync with the same Mozilla account and Bookmarks enabled.
Choose a one-time transfer or ongoing sync

For a straightforward move, use HTML: Mozilla documents it for transferring bookmarks to another computer. Choose Sync if you want ongoing synchronization and can use the same Mozilla account on both computers. Mozilla’s export guide and Sync setup guide explain the two approaches.

Transfer bookmarks with an HTML file
Export from the old computer
- Open Firefox and select the menu button.
- Choose Bookmarks, then Manage bookmarks to open the Library.
- In the Library toolbar, choose Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML….
- Save the file. Firefox names it
bookmarks.htmlby default; note where you saved it.
Mozilla describes HTML export as the format for transferring bookmarks to another computer or browser. The exported file contains bookmarks; it is not a copy of your entire Firefox profile.
Move the file to the new computer
Transfer bookmarks.html using any method you have available: for example, a USB flash drive, a file-sharing service, or another way to move a file between your computers. A USB drive is optional, not a Firefox requirement.

Import into Firefox on the new computer
- Open Firefox and go to the Bookmarks Library using the menu button, then Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.
- Choose Import and Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML….
- Browse to the transferred
bookmarks.htmlfile, select it, and confirm the import. - Check the imported bookmarks in the Bookmarks Menu and organize them if needed.

Know what importing changes
HTML import adds the transferred bookmarks to the bookmarks already on the new computer; it does not replace the existing set. If the same links are already there, duplicates may result. If you want a recovery point before changing the destination library, create a bookmark backup from the Library’s Import and Backup menu first. Mozilla distinguishes an HTML transfer from a JSON/JSONLZ4 bookmark backup: HTML is for importing or transferring bookmarks, while a backup file is used to restore bookmarks in Firefox. If bookmarks are not visible on the toolbar
The bookmarks may have imported successfully but not appear on the toolbar. Enable the Bookmarks Toolbar through Firefox’s toolbar customization, then check again. Mozilla’s export help includes this toolbar guidance.

Use Firefox Sync instead
- On the old computer, sign in to the Mozilla account you intend to use.
- Open Sync settings and make sure Bookmarks is selected among the data types to synchronize.
- On the new computer, sign in to that same account and allow Sync to bring over the enabled data.
Sync is useful when you want selected Firefox data to remain available across signed-in devices, rather than making a one-time bookmark file. A newly created account will not contain data stored under another Mozilla account. Sync also cannot recover bookmarks that were never synchronized; if they are missing from the account, you may need access to the old Firefox profile or another backup. Sync synchronizes selected data, not every file in a Firefox profile. Mozilla’s Sync instructions cover setup.

Pick the right file or account
- Moving bookmarks to another computer: export and import the HTML file.
- Restoring bookmarks inside Firefox from a saved bookmark backup: use the backup restore option in the Library, rather than treating the backup as an HTML transfer.
- Keeping bookmarks synchronized: use the same Mozilla account on both computers and enable Bookmarks in Sync settings.
