Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can move a WordPress website from one Hostinger account to another in two ways: use Hostinger’s Website ownership transfer when your plan and add-ons allow it, or perform a manual file-and-database migration. The ownership workflow copies the site but not its domain, email, or DNS zone. A manual move gives you more control, but you must copy both the files and database and then update wp-config.php.
Keep the original site online until the destination copy works, its forms and media have been tested, and DNS and email records are ready. Point production traffic to the new account only after those checks; DNS propagation can briefly send visitors to different servers.

Choose the right Hostinger transfer route
Your first decision is whether the destination account can use Website ownership transfer. If it cannot, use the manual procedure. Neither route automatically carries every service attached to the old account, so plan domain, DNS, and email work separately.

| Option | Eligibility and cost | What you do | Domain, DNS and email | Rollback and outage considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Website ownership transfer | Hostinger lists Cloud Enterprise and Cloud Professional plans as including the feature through WordPress add-ons. Other plans may require purchasing the add-on in hPanel; the current price is not stated here. | Start the ownership-transfer workflow in hPanel and have the receiving account accept it. Hostinger transfers the website files, database and content. | The domain name, email and DNS zone records are excluded. Reconnect DNS and recreate or move those services separately. | Less file and database handling, but you still need a DNS cutover and a tested source copy for rollback. |
| Manual same-domain migration | Works when the accounts or plans are not eligible for the add-on. Hostinger’s free migration service does not cover internal Hostinger-to-Hostinger moves. | Archive and download public_html, download a database backup, create the destination site, upload and extract files, import the database, and edit wp-config.php. |
The domain can remain the same, but DNS and email are not transferred by copying files and a database. Check and recreate the required records. | You control the cutover and can leave the old account online while testing. A wrong database credential or premature DNS change is the usual source of interruption. |
| Manual different-domain migration | Use this when the site will be reachable at a new domain. | Perform the file and database migration, then run a WordPress search-and-replace to change the old domain references. | Configure the new domain’s DNS and mail records independently. | A changed A record may still be propagating and can temporarily result in a 403 error. |
Choose ownership transfer for the least hands-on copying when the feature is available and you are comfortable rebuilding excluded services. Choose manual migration when you need control over timing, want to move between plans that do not qualify, or are changing domains.

Prepare both accounts before touching production traffic
Confirm access and destination capacity
- Sign in to the source account with permission to download website files and backups.
- Sign in to the destination account and confirm that the hosting plan can run the site’s WordPress version, plugins, theme, PHP requirements and storage footprint.
- Know which account will own the domain after the move. A domain-account transfer is a separate operation from a website transfer.
- Make sure you can edit DNS at the authoritative provider or in the account that currently hosts the DNS zone.
Create a migration inventory
Record the site’s active domain, WordPress administrator login, database name, installed plugins and theme, scheduled tasks, custom SSL settings, FTP accounts, forms, media-heavy directories and any external services that depend on DNS. Hostinger identifies cron jobs, DNS records, custom SSL configuration and FTP accounts as items that are not included in its general migration process. Treat each as a separate recreation task.
Protect the source copy
Do not cancel the source hosting or delete its files when the destination upload finishes. Keep it available until you have confirmed administrator login, front-end pages, images, forms, checkout or other business-critical functions, and the DNS path. If visitors can submit data while you copy the site, schedule the final database backup during a quiet period or temporarily pause changes so the destination does not miss new orders, comments or form entries.
Route 1: use Hostinger Website ownership transfer
Check whether the feature is available
Hostinger states that Cloud Enterprise and Cloud Professional plans include Website ownership transfer through WordPress add-ons. On other plans, the add-on may need to be purchased in hPanel. Availability and pricing can change, so verify the option and any displayed charge in the account before starting. If the option is absent or the destination plan is not eligible, follow the manual method instead.

- Open the website in the source account’s hPanel and locate the WordPress add-ons or Website ownership transfer control.
- Review the receiving-account details and start the transfer. Use an account that the intended owner can access; ownership changes are difficult to unwind once the recipient accepts.
- Have the destination account accept the request and wait for Hostinger to complete the copy of the website files, database and content.
- After completion, sign in to WordPress on the destination account and test the site before changing public DNS.
This workflow transfers the website itself, not the domain registration, email mailboxes or DNS zone records. Those exclusions are deliberate: a successful ownership transfer can still leave the domain pointing at the old hosting and mail flowing through the old account.
Reconnect excluded services
List every DNS record currently used by the site and mail service before changing nameservers or A records. Recreate the web records at the destination, then verify MX, SPF, DKIM and any other mail-related records. Recreate mailboxes or complete an independent email export/import process; the ownership workflow does not move existing email. If you use custom SSL, FTP accounts or cron jobs, configure them again on the destination.

Route 2: manually move a site that keeps the same domain
A WordPress installation is a combination of files and a database. Copying only public_html omits posts, pages, settings, users and other database content. The following sequence preserves both parts.
1. Archive and download the source files
- In the source account, open the website in hPanel and launch File Manager.
- Open the site’s
public_htmldirectory and select its contents, including hidden files such as.htaccessif the file manager displays them. - Use the archive function to create a compressed file, then download that archive to a local computer. Keep the archive unchanged until the destination has been verified.
The archive is the file portion of the migration. It contains WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploaded media and configuration files, but it cannot replace the database backup.

2. Download the matching database backup
- In the source hPanel, open Backups.
- Choose Restore and Download.
- Select the database used by this WordPress installation and choose the backup date that represents the copy you intend to migrate.
- Download the database file and label it with the site name and backup date so you do not import a different site or an older snapshot.
Keep the file backup and database backup from the same point in time when possible. If the database contains rapidly changing orders, comments or form submissions, make a final backup immediately before DNS cutover and repeat the import if necessary.
3. Create or prepare the destination WordPress site
- Sign in to the destination Hostinger account.
- Create the destination website or prepare the existing WordPress installation that will receive the files.
- Record the destination database name, database username and database password. The destination username will normally be different from the source username.
- Ensure the destination domain is attached to this site. You can test the installation through the temporary address or another private method before changing the live DNS record.
4. Upload and extract the files
- Open the destination site’s File Manager and go to
public_html. - Upload the archive downloaded from the source account.
- Extract it into the destination
public_htmldirectory. Check thatwp-admin,wp-contentandwp-includesare directly insidepublic_html, rather than nested inside an extra directory created by the archive.
If the archive contains a top-level folder, move that folder’s contents into the destination document root. A nested path can produce a directory listing, a 404, or a new WordPress installer instead of your existing site.
5. Import the database
- Open the destination account’s database management or import tool.
- Select the database created for the destination WordPress site.
- Import the downloaded database file and wait for the operation to finish before testing WordPress.
Do not import the file into a similarly named database by mistake. The database selected here must be the one whose name, user and password you will place in wp-config.php.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
6. Point wp-config.php at the destination database
- In the destination File Manager, open
public_html/wp-config.php. - Change the database constants so they match the destination credentials:
define('DB_NAME', 'destination_database_name');
define('DB_USER', 'destination_database_user');
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'destination_database_password');
- Save the file and protect it from accidental exposure. Do not paste real passwords into support tickets, screenshots or public documentation.
- Load the site through the destination address and sign in to WordPress. A database connection error usually means one of these three values is wrong, the database import failed, or the destination user lacks permission for the database.
Hostinger specifically warns that the database username will be different after the move. Changing only DB_NAME while leaving the old user or password is therefore not sufficient.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →7. Test before changing DNS
- Open the home page, several internal pages, category or archive pages, and a media attachment.
- Sign in to
/wp-admin, open the Media Library, and edit a test page. - Submit each important form and confirm that the expected notification or integration receives it.
- Check plugin settings that store external API keys, payment endpoints, webhooks or scheduled jobs.
- Confirm that HTTPS, redirects, permalinks and robots settings behave as intended.
Only after these checks should you change the domain’s A record or nameservers. Leave the source site intact while DNS updates spread.
Moving to a different domain
A domain change is more than replacing the DNS destination. WordPress stores the site URL in the database, and plugins, serialized settings, media links and content can contain the old hostname.
- Create the new-domain WordPress site in the destination account.
- Upload and extract the source files and import the database using the manual procedure.
- Use a WordPress search-and-replace procedure to update references from the old domain to the new domain. Use a tool that understands serialized WordPress data; a blind text replacement can corrupt serialized options.
- Set the new domain as the WordPress and site address, then clear caches and regenerate permalinks.
- Configure the new domain’s DNS and SSL and test canonical redirects, media URLs, forms and administrator login.
Hostinger notes that a changed A record can still be propagating after the move. During that period, some requests may reach the old server while others reach the new one, and a temporary 403 error can appear even when the files and database are correct. Keep the old site available until the new record is consistently resolving.
What happens to the domain, DNS and email?
| Service | Included in Website ownership transfer? | What you must do |
|---|---|---|
| Website files | Yes | Verify the copied document root and uploads. |
| WordPress database | Yes | Test the copied content and settings. |
| Domain registration | No | Keep it at the current registrar or perform a separate domain-account transfer. |
| DNS zone records | No | Recreate or connect A, CNAME, MX, TXT and other records at the authoritative DNS provider. |
| Email mailboxes and messages | No | Recreate mailboxes and use a separate export/import process for existing messages. |
| Cron jobs, custom SSL and FTP accounts | Not included in Hostinger’s general migration process | Recreate and test them on the destination. |
Moving only the domain between Hostinger accounts does not move website files, databases, emails or other related services. Conversely, copying the site does not transfer the domain. Treat the registration, DNS, web hosting and mail as separate layers.

DNS records to check before cutover
- Web: the A record or CNAME that sends the domain to the destination hosting.
- Mail: MX records for the provider that receives mail.
- Authentication: SPF and DKIM records, plus DMARC if your mail policy uses it.
- Service records: any verification, CDN, subdomain or third-party records used by the site.
Do not delete the old mail records merely because the website moved. Changing MX records without a mail migration can interrupt delivery or strand messages on the old service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to minimize downtime
- Copy first: complete the ownership transfer or manual file-and-database migration while the source domain still points to the original site.
- Freeze high-change activity: during the final copy, avoid publishing, accepting orders or collecting form submissions that would not exist in the destination database.
- Validate privately: test the destination login, pages, media, forms, HTTPS and integrations before editing DNS.
- Prepare DNS and mail: have the destination web record and all required MX, SPF and DKIM values ready. Confirm the mailboxes exist before changing MX records.
- Switch traffic: update the web DNS record only after the destination passes testing.
- Monitor both accounts: because DNS propagation can create a temporary mismatch, keep the source site and its backups available until requests consistently reach the destination.
This sequence does not promise instant global convergence; it limits the interruption by ensuring that a working destination exists before visitors are directed there.
Verification checklist after the switch
- The domain resolves to the destination hosting and HTTPS shows the correct certificate.
- WordPress administrator login works and the dashboard displays the expected plugins, theme and content.
- Posts, pages, menus, images, downloads and embedded media load without old-domain or missing-file errors.
- Permalinks, redirects and 404 handling behave as they did on the source site.
- Contact, newsletter, ecommerce and account forms deliver to the intended recipients.
- MX, SPF and DKIM records still match the mail provider, and a test message can be sent and received.
- Any cron jobs, custom SSL settings, FTP accounts, CDN connections and external webhooks have been recreated and tested.
- Search-and-replace did not alter serialized settings or third-party URLs that should remain unchanged.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Error establishing a database connection”
Reopen wp-config.php and compare DB_NAME, DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD with the destination database credentials. Confirm that the database import completed and that the destination user has access. The source username is not a safe value to reuse automatically.
The site shows a new WordPress installer
The files may be in the wrong directory, or wp-config.php may be missing from the destination document root. Verify that wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes and the configuration file sit directly under public_html, then confirm that the imported database is the one referenced in the configuration.
Visitors see a 403 after a domain change
Hostinger identifies DNS propagation after a changed A record as a possible cause. Check that the record points to the intended destination, keep the old site online, and retest after propagation. Also verify file permissions, the document-root location and any custom SSL or security configuration recreated on the destination.

Pages work but images or links still use the old domain
For a different-domain move, run a WordPress-aware search-and-replace over the database and then clear caches. Do not use an ordinary raw text replacement on serialized data, because it can damage stored lengths and settings.
Email stopped arriving
Website files do not contain mailboxes. Check MX records first, then SPF and DKIM, and confirm that the destination or external mail provider has the required accounts. If the domain itself was moved between accounts, remember that the domain move alone did not move messages or mail services.
Rollback plan if the destination is not ready
- Leave the source hosting and source DNS values unchanged while testing.
- If you already changed the web record and encounter a serious failure, restore the previous web DNS value so visitors return to the working source site.
- Do not delete the destination copy; use the error details to correct database credentials, file placement, DNS or service configuration.
- Repeat the final database backup if the source received new data during testing, then import that newer snapshot before the next cutover.
- Switch DNS again only after the corrected destination passes the verification checklist.
A rollback cannot recover data that was never copied, so preserving the source account and taking a final database backup are more important than closing the old hosting immediately.

Why Hostinger’s free migration service is not the answer here
Hostinger states that transfers between Hostinger accounts or hosting plans do not qualify for its free migration service and must be performed manually. That service is aimed at sites hosted elsewhere. For an internal move, use the ownership-transfer add-on when eligible or perform the file-and-database procedure yourself, then handle DNS, email and other excluded services separately.
