When a motion controller stops responding, first determine whether the game supports motion input and whether its motion setting is enabled. Then update the console and controller, run the platform’s calibration procedure, and check camera visibility if you use a camera-tracked controller. Joy-Con, PlayStation Move and PlayStation VR2 Sense use different tracking systems, so the correct fix depends on the exact controller and console.
Start with the five-minute diagnosis
Do these checks in order. They separate a game setting problem from a calibration, connection or hardware fault without changing unrelated settings.

- Identify the hardware. Write down the controller model (left or right Joy-Con, PlayStation Move, or PS VR2 Sense), the console generation and the game. Tracking instructions are not interchangeable between these systems.
- Confirm motion support. Check the game’s control options and on-screen instructions. Some titles do not accept motion input, while others ship with motion controls disabled until you turn them on.
- Install available updates. Update the console. On Nintendo Switch systems, also update the controller firmware when that option is offered.
- Calibrate using the correct menu. Use Nintendo’s motion-calibration menu for Joy-Con, or the PlayStation Move calibration command on PS3. Do not substitute a different platform’s procedure.
- Check tracking conditions. PlayStation Move needs a clear view of its glowing sphere through the camera. A Joy-Con’s inertial sensors do not use that camera-tracking method.
If the fault remains in every supported game, or calibration cannot finish, stop repeating resets and arrange manufacturer service. Record which controller is affected before contacting support.
Why motion tracking fails
“Motion tracking” describes several different technologies:
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
- Joy-Con: the controller measures its orientation and movement with built-in motion sensors. Certain software can also use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera for a specific feature; that camera is not responsible for every tilt or shake command.
- PlayStation Move: a PlayStation Eye or compatible PlayStation Camera watches the illuminated sphere on the controller. The camera must see the sphere continuously enough to calculate its position.
- PS VR2 Sense: the headset tracks the Sense controller’s tracking rings. It is a separate system from the older Move and PlayStation Camera arrangement.
Because the sensors and cameras differ, a fix that helps one controller can be irrelevant or misleading for another. Start with the appropriate section below.
Nintendo Switch Joy-Con: complete troubleshooting
Check the game and the console edition
Nintendo’s Joy-Con troubleshooting guidance covers Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED. Verify that the game supports motion controls and that its motion option is on. A title that only accepts buttons will appear to ignore movement even when the controller is working normally.
Switch 2 and the earlier Switch family do not necessarily show identical menus. Use the labels displayed on your own console rather than assuming that a Switch calibration path is unchanged on Switch 2.

Update the system and controller
- Connect the console to power or ensure it has sufficient charge.
- Install the latest system update offered in System Settings.
- On Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED, open the controller-update command in the Controllers and Sensors area and apply any available Joy-Con firmware update. Follow the on-screen prompts and keep the affected controller connected while it runs.
Nintendo specifically recommends current software when diagnosing motion problems. An update cannot repair a failed sensor, but it removes a software-version mismatch from the diagnosis.
Calibrate motion controls correctly
Nintendo’s calibration instructions name Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED. The exact wording can differ by system software; if Switch 2 presents different instructions, follow its current on-screen procedure.
- Detach straps, grips and other accessories from the Joy-Con. They can prevent the controller from resting correctly.
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- When prompted, hold the controller’s + or − button, as directed for the controller being calibrated.
- Place the Joy-Con on a flat, stable surface with the analog stick facing upward. Keep the surface still while the calibration runs.
- Wait for the completion message before picking up the controller and test it in a game that supports motion.
Moving the controller, leaving an accessory attached or calibrating on a soft or tilted surface can produce a bad reference position. If the menu cannot complete calibration, treat that as a fault symptom rather than repeatedly restarting the same attempt.
Check the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera only when relevant
Some software uses the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera. Nintendo gives the Eating Contest activity in 1-2-Switch as an example. Make sure that camera is not covered when the game specifically calls for it. This check does not explain a general failure of tilt or shake sensing in games that never use the IR camera.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReset and reconnect a Joy-Con
- Detach the affected Joy-Con from the console.
- Press its small SYNC button, then reconnect it according to the console’s pairing instructions.
- Confirm that the controller appears in the controller screen and retest motion in a supported title.
The SYNC-button location and pairing behavior can vary by model, so use the current Nintendo instructions for your generation. Do not assume that a brief button press is a full reset if the support page specifies a different sequence.
When a Joy-Con needs service
Nintendo’s escalation rule is straightforward: if motion controls fail in any supported software, or the calibration procedure fails, the affected Joy-Con should be serviced. Note whether the left or right controller is affected and describe which games and calibration steps reproduced the problem. A replacement Joy-Con is an option only after checking generation compatibility and comparing it with the available service route; prices and service terms vary by region, model and date, so no universal figure applies.
PlayStation Move: restore camera tracking
Understand the camera requirement
The PlayStation Move system is camera based. The PlayStation Move instruction manual explains that the PlayStation Eye detects the illuminated sphere on the controller to follow movement. If the camera cannot see that sphere, movement can become slow, jumpy or absent even when the controller is powered on.
Improve the camera’s view
- Clear the line of sight. Remove objects, hands or furniture between the camera and the glowing sphere.
- Control bright light. Avoid very bright conditions and direct sunlight aimed toward the camera. Strong light can reduce the camera’s ability to distinguish the sphere.
- Use the recommended distance. The manual specifies about 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) between the player and camera.
- Select wide-angle view. Set the camera to its wide-angle position so the controller remains in frame during larger movements.
- Keep the camera stable. A camera that shifts after setup changes the geometry the console uses to interpret movement.
Test again after changing one condition at a time. That makes it clear whether lighting, distance or field of view caused the improvement.
Calibrate on PS3 when movement is abnormal
On PS3, open Settings > Accessory Settings > Calibrate Motion Controller and follow the prompts. The Move manual also recommends pressing the rear reset button if movement remains abnormal and keeping the controller away from nearby magnetic sources, which can interfere with its behavior.
Pair and charge the Move controller
A controller that does not operate at all may have a pairing or battery problem rather than a tracking problem. On PS3, connect the Move controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button to pair it. A depleted battery prevents operation, so charge it before diagnosing camera tracking.
For PS4 and PS5, use the current PlayStation support flow: turn off the console, hold the rear reset button with a pin or similar tool, reconnect the controller with USB, and press PS. The exact game controls and calibration prompts can differ, so follow the game’s on-screen instructions after pairing.
Rank #3
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Do not confuse PlayStation Move with PS VR2 Sense
PlayStation Move and PS VR2 Sense are different controller systems. PlayStation Move works with PS3, PS4 and PS5 when used with the appropriate PlayStation VR and camera setup. On PS5, using the PlayStation Camera requires the PlayStation Camera adapter. Move is not compatible with PS VR2 or the HD Camera.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you observe | Most useful next check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Movement is ignored in one game only | Check the title’s motion-support statement and control settings. | The game may not use motion input or may require you to enable it. |
| Joy-Con movement fails in several supported games | Update the console and controller, then run the Joy-Con calibration menu. | A failed calibration or failure across supported software points toward service. |
| Move movement is slow or jumps while the sphere is visible | Remove obstacles, reduce direct sunlight, use wide-angle view and stand about 1–3 m away. | The camera’s view or operating conditions are likely limiting tracking. |
| Move does not respond at all | Charge it, pair by USB and press PS; reset with the rear button if needed. | The immediate issue may be power or pairing rather than optical tracking. |
| Only a feature that asks for the right Joy-Con camera fails | Inspect the right Joy-Con IR Motion Camera for an obstruction. | The feature may require the IR camera; ordinary tilt sensing can still work. |
| PS VR2 Sense is not tracked | Use PS VR2-specific checks and confirm title compatibility. | Move and PlayStation Camera troubleshooting is the wrong system. |
Repair or replacement: make the decision from evidence
Choose service or replacement only after you have isolated the fault. Use these three questions:
- Does the issue persist across supported games? A single title points first to its settings. Multiple supported titles make a controller or platform fault more likely.
- Can calibration complete? A Joy-Con that cannot complete Nintendo’s procedure meets the manufacturer’s stated service threshold.
- Is the replacement compatible? Match the controller to the exact console generation and required accessories. A Move camera for a legacy setup, for example, does not replace the headset tracking used by PS VR2 Sense.
| Situation | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con fails in supported software and calibration fails | Manufacturer service first | Nintendo directs users to service for persistent failure; compatibility and service terms should be checked before buying. |
| Joy-Con works after calibration but one game ignores motion | Game settings or title support check | The evidence does not establish a hardware fault. |
| Move camera is missing or unsuitable for a PS3/PS4/PS5 legacy setup | Check the exact camera, console and VR generation before purchasing | Move tracking depends on camera visibility and console compatibility. |
| PS VR2 Sense tracking is failing | PS5/PS VR2 troubleshooting | Move accessories are not compatible with PS VR2. |
No universal repair price, replacement price or turnaround time is established here. Those terms vary by region, model and date; confirm them with the manufacturer before committing money.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Calibrating the wrong system. A Switch menu cannot calibrate a Move controller, and a PS3 Move procedure does not apply to Joy-Con.
- Assuming every game supports motion. Verify support and the in-game toggle before opening the hardware settings.
- Blocking a Move camera. A controller can be charged and paired yet still be invisible to the camera.
- Using direct sunlight as a test environment. Bright light can make optical tracking less reliable, so test in controlled indoor lighting.
- Buying Move hardware for PS VR2. Sense controllers use headset tracking and are not interchangeable with Move.
- Repeating calibration on an unstable surface. The Joy-Con procedure requires a flat, stable surface and the stick facing upward.
- Replacing hardware before recording evidence. Note the controller side, affected games, update status and whether calibration completed; this information speeds a service decision.
A practical retest checklist
After applying a fix, retest under a controlled setup rather than changing several variables at once.

- Start with a charged, updated controller.
- For Joy-Con, complete calibration with accessories removed and the controller resting as instructed.
- For Move, place the camera securely, select wide-angle view, remove obstructions and stand within about 1–3 m.
- Move slowly first, then make the larger movement the game requests. Watch for drift, delay, sudden jumps or a complete loss of input.
- Repeat once in a second supported game. If the same controller still fails, preserve your notes and move to manufacturer support.
What to tell support
Give the manufacturer specific, reproducible information:
- Console model and system-software version.
- Controller model and, for Joy-Con, whether it is left or right.
- Games tested and whether each one supports motion input.
- Whether motion controls are enabled in the game.
- Update results, calibration menu used and whether calibration completed.
- For Move, camera model, approximate distance, field-of-view setting and lighting conditions.
- Whether the fault is total, intermittent, drifting, delayed or limited to one feature.
This record helps support distinguish a game configuration issue from a controller that meets the service threshold.
Bottom line
Begin with game support and settings, then update and calibrate the exact controller on its own platform. Joy-Con faults that persist across supported games or prevent calibration warrant Nintendo service. PlayStation Move requires a visible sphere, suitable lighting, a clear camera view and the correct distance; pairing and battery checks come first when it does not power on. PS VR2 Sense is a separate headset-tracked system, so Move troubleshooting and accessories cannot solve a Sense-tracking problem.
