Excess vitamin D—usually from supplements—can drive calcium in the blood high enough to cause vomiting, weakness, confusion, dehydration, kidney injury, abnormal heart rhythms and, in severe cases, death. If you took more than directed or developed symptoms after high-dose use, contact Poison Control or a healthcare professional for case-specific advice rather than trying to diagnose yourself from a dose or symptom list.
What vitamin D toxicity is—and why supplements are usually responsible
Vitamin D toxicity (also called hypervitaminosis D) is an excessive amount of vitamin D in the body that leads to hypercalcemia, or too much calcium in the blood. Vitamin D normally helps the intestine absorb calcium. In toxic amounts, that process can become excessive, and high calcium can affect the digestive system, brain, muscles, kidneys and heart.

Ordinary food and sunlight rarely produce toxic vitamin D levels. The usual source is a supplement error: taking a high-strength product too often, combining several products that contain vitamin D, confusing a weekly prescription with a daily dose, or continuing a large dose for weeks or months without clinical supervision. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements explains the physiology and risk factors in its Vitamin D Health Professional Fact Sheet.
A clinician may intentionally prescribe a dose above the general daily upper limit for a limited period to correct a documented deficiency. That supervised treatment is different from taking the same amount on your own or for longer than instructed. Do not change a prescribed regimen based on an internet table; ask the prescriber or pharmacist how to handle a missed or extra dose.

Vitamin D toxicity symptoms: what to watch for
The following symptoms are associated with high calcium and vitamin D excess, but none proves toxicity by itself. They can also result from infections, medicines, dehydration and many other conditions. A new symptom after a dosing mistake is a reason to obtain advice, not a reason to make a diagnosis at home.
Common or earlier symptoms
- Nausea or vomiting
- Poor appetite
- Unusual weakness or fatigue
- Headache
- Excessive thirst and frequent urination
- Dehydration, including dry mouth, dizziness or markedly reduced urine
- Muscle or other body pain
These effects may appear as calcium rises. Vomiting and frequent urination can worsen dehydration, which in turn puts additional strain on the kidneys.
Neurologic, kidney and heart warning signs
- Confusion, unusual drowsiness or difficulty thinking clearly
- Persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
- Flank or urinary pain suggestive of kidney stones
- Very little urine or other signs of worsening dehydration
- Palpitations or an unusually irregular heartbeat
Severe toxicity can damage the kidneys and cause calcium deposits in soft tissues (soft-tissue calcification). Marked hypercalcemia can disturb the heart’s rhythm; extreme cases can be fatal. If someone collapses, is difficult to wake, is severely confused, has serious breathing or heart symptoms, or cannot keep fluids down, call emergency services. Do not wait for a home test or for every symptom to appear.

Can vitamin D be harmful?
Yes. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets tolerable upper intake levels (ULs) for the total daily intake from food, drinks and supplements. A UL is a population-level ceiling intended to reduce the risk of harm—not a target, and not a treatment threshold. Exceeding it once does not establish poisoning, while staying below it does not guarantee that an individual cannot have a problem.

| Age | Daily UL for vitamin D (all sources) | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Birth–6 months | 1,000 IU (25 micrograms) | General upper intake level, not a dose to aim for |
| 7–12 months | 1,500 IU (37.5 micrograms) | Applies to total daily intake |
| 1–3 years | 2,500 IU (62.5 micrograms) | Applies to total daily intake |
| 4–8 years | 3,000 IU (75 micrograms) | Applies to total daily intake |
| 9 years and older | 4,000 IU (100 micrograms) | Applies to total daily intake |
The values above are published by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements in its consumer vitamin D fact sheet. They are age-based daily limits, not instructions for treating a deficiency. A healthcare provider can prescribe a higher amount temporarily when there is a clinical reason and follow-up is available.
How clinicians recognize possible toxicity
Doctors combine the exposure history, symptoms, examination and laboratory results. NIH ODS describes vitamin D toxicity as typically involving a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration above 375 nanomoles per litre (150 nanograms per millilitre), together with marked hypercalcemia. That laboratory pattern is clinical context, not a stand-alone rule that a reader can use to diagnose an individual. People can have symptoms for other reasons, and a single vitamin D result must be interpreted with calcium levels and the rest of the clinical picture.
When an excessive dose or symptoms are reported, a clinician may order blood calcium and vitamin D-related testing and assess whether the kidneys or other organs are being affected. Bring the product container, label, strength, number of tablets or drops, timing and any other supplements or medicines to the visit. An accurate timeline is often more useful than estimating from memory.
What do I do if I take too much vitamin D?
Act on the exposure, not on a guessed diagnosis. The safest next step depends on the product, amount, timing, age, symptoms and medical history.

- Stop and check the label while you seek advice. Note the product name, vitamin D form and strength (IU or micrograms), how much was taken, when it was taken, and whether other products also contain vitamin D. Keep the packaging available.
- Contact a poison specialist promptly for an unintentional or excessive dose. In the United States, use webPOISONCONTROL or call 1-800-222-1222. Poison Control states: “Whether online or by phone, expert guidance is always free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day.” Follow the specialist’s instructions about observation, a clinic visit or emergency care.
- Seek medical evaluation if symptoms have developed. A healthcare professional can decide whether calcium and vitamin D-related blood tests, hydration or additional treatment are needed. MedlinePlus notes that providers may tell a patient to stop vitamin D and use additional treatment in severe cases; the exact plan depends on the findings.
- Use emergency services for severe deterioration. Collapse, inability to stay awake, severe confusion, serious heart or breathing symptoms, or repeated vomiting with inability to drink requires urgent emergency care. Take the supplement container with you if possible.
- Do not improvise treatment. Do not induce vomiting, take “detox” products, or deliberately drink extreme amounts of water. Do not permanently stop or restart a clinician-prescribed vitamin D regimen without discussing it with the prescriber, unless emergency clinicians instruct you to do so.
Outside the United States, contact your country’s poison centre or urgent medical service. Poison centres can give exposure-specific advice even when the person feels well; waiting for symptoms can delay care because calcium-related effects may evolve over time.
An example of a dosing error
Poison Control describes a patient who mistakenly took 50,000 IU every day for 12 days instead of once weekly, while also taking 400 IU daily. She developed headache, vomiting, nausea and weakness. Poison Control advised medical evaluation and calcium testing. This is an illustrative case, not a measure of how often toxicity occurs and not a prediction of what will happen to another person. The important lesson is that a weekly prescription and a daily supplement can look similar on a label but produce a very different exposure.
When reporting a mistake, state the intended schedule and the actual schedule separately. “One capsule” is not enough information: the strength, formulation, number of doses and duration determine the exposure.

Excess calcium can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, producing nausea, vomiting and appetite loss. It alters water handling by the kidneys, which helps explain thirst, frequent urination and dehydration. Dehydration and calcium deposition can impair kidney function and contribute to stones. In the nervous system, high calcium can cause weakness, slowed thinking or confusion. At high levels it can interfere with electrical conduction in the heart, producing abnormal rhythms. These links explain why a problem that starts with a supplement can become a whole-body emergency.

Kidney damage and soft-tissue calcification are serious complications rather than symptoms to monitor casually. A person can look only mildly unwell while laboratory abnormalities are becoming dangerous, which is another reason to obtain professional guidance after a substantial dosing error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preventing repeat errors
- Write the prescribed schedule on the container in plain language, such as “once weekly,” and include the day of the week.
- Use one medication or supplement list that includes vitamin D from multivitamins, calcium products, fortified drinks and separate vitamin D capsules.
- Check whether the label uses IU, micrograms or both; 1 microgram of vitamin D equals 40 IU.
- Ask a pharmacist before adding an over-the-counter product to a clinician-prescribed course.
- Store high-strength products separately from daily vitamins and keep them away from children.
- If you miss a prescribed dose, ask the prescriber or pharmacist what to do instead of doubling the next dose.
These steps reduce arithmetic and scheduling mistakes, but they do not replace clinical monitoring when a high dose has been prescribed.
Questions people commonly ask
Can I tell from symptoms whether I am toxic?
No. Nausea, thirst, weakness, headache and confusion have many possible causes. Symptoms after a large or repeated dose warrant Poison Control or medical advice, while diagnosis requires clinical assessment and, when indicated, laboratory testing.
Recommended Free Tools
Is the upper limit the point at which poisoning starts?
No. The UL is a general daily intake ceiling for all sources, not a diagnosis line or a treatment threshold. A supervised short-term prescription can exceed it, and an individual’s risk depends on the complete exposure and health context.
Best Value
Do I need help if I took one extra dose but feel fine?
Ask Poison Control or a pharmacist for case-specific advice, giving the exact strength, amount, timing, age and other products involved. Do not assume that feeling well proves there is no risk, and do not take additional doses until you know how to proceed.
What should I bring to a medical visit?
Bring the bottle or a photograph of both sides of the label, the dosing instructions, a timeline of each dose, and a list of other medicines and supplements. Include symptoms, their onset and any vomiting or trouble keeping fluids down.
