The official Liu Kang character profile describes him as a Shaolin monk and “Champion of Earthrealm,” and labels him “THE CHOSEN ONE.” It says the Shaolin order adopted and trained him, and that he defeated Shang Tsung and saved Earthrealm. Those roles make Liu Kang the strongest franchise-wide answer when someone asks who Mortal Kombat’s main character is.

What Liu Kang’s role is in Mortal Kombat 1
In Mortal Kombat 1, Liu Kang is a Fire God who created the reborn Mortal Kombat Universe. The game’s official FAQ says its story reflects Liu Kang’s vision and follows forces threatening his New Era. That makes him central to this game’s setting and story premise.
Why Mortal Kombat does not have one lead in every story
Liu Kang’s prominence does not mean each Mortal Kombat story follows him alone. The same official FAQ describes the game’s cinematic Story mode as featuring a wide-ranging cast, with reimagined rivalries and original backstories. The franchise-level answer is therefore best understood as its recurring heroic figure, rather than an exclusive protagonist across every installment or adaptation.
