Your integration can run perfectly in a sandbox and still fail after deployment because the two environments may use different endpoints, credentials, permissions, quotas, data, security checks, and runtime rules. A successful demo proves that one path worked under test conditions; it does not prove that production is ready. Diagnose the failure by comparing the exact production request and account conditions with the ones that passed in the sandbox.
Why a sandbox pass does not guarantee production readiness
A sandbox is a controlled approximation, not necessarily a synchronized copy of production. The differences are vendor-specific: one platform may copy settings but disable webhooks, another may permit a redirect URL that production rejects, and production usage limits may be lower than a sandbox default. Zendesk describes its sandboxes as a point-in-time reflection of production settings and data; they do not stay synchronized. Zendesk’s sandbox guidance also notes that API tokens are not copied and webhooks are deactivated by default.

That means “the demo worked” is evidence only for the particular identity, endpoint, data, event, and request volume tested. It does not establish that the production deployment uses the same conditions.

Check the production endpoint and credentials first
Sandbox and production often have separate base URLs, credentials, and authentication details. Zendesk explicitly documents differences in endpoints and authentication between its environments. A deployment can therefore fail even when the application code is unchanged: it may still point to a sandbox URL, or call the production URL with sandbox credentials. Zendesk’s environment guidance covers these distinctions.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
Inspect the configuration the running production process actually resolves—not only the local file or deployment template. Confirm the destination host, credential source, and authentication method without printing secret values into logs. Verify that the production secret has been provisioned and rotated through the expected secret-management mechanism.
Confirm that the production identity is authorized
Authorization can differ at both the organization and user level. Salesforce, for example, requires API access to be available for the organization and the assigned user to have the API Enabled permission. Salesforce documents API_DISABLED_FOR_ORG when the organization lacks API access; its REST guidance says the user must have API Enabled to make an API call. See Salesforce’s API access troubleshooting guidance and Salesforce REST API documentation.
Do not treat that Salesforce-specific permission model as universal. For another provider, check its own documentation for account entitlement, user roles, OAuth scopes, and access to the particular resource or operation. A successful sandbox login does not establish that the production identity has equivalent rights.

Investigate 429 errors as a limit or billing problem
A 429 response means the request was refused under a limit, but the remedy depends on the error details. For the OpenAI API, distinguish temporary request or token rate limiting from an exhausted prepaid balance, an organization usage limit, or a spend limit. Retrying a billing or quota failure will not restore access; inspect the response message and code alongside the account’s billing and usage state. OpenAI’s 429 guidance explains these different cases.
When the limit is temporary
Honor a valid Retry-After response header. If it is absent or invalid, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter rather than retrying immediately. OpenAI notes that unsuccessful requests count toward per-minute limits, so repeated retries can prolong the problem. Record whether failures cluster around a rate window, a particular model, or a usage threshold before changing traffic patterns.
Do not generalize one vendor’s quota to another
Salesforce illustrates why sandbox headroom is a poor production forecast: Salesforce Help says sandbox orgs default to 5,000,000 API calls per 24 hours, while production API entitlement depends on edition, licenses, and add-ons. The stated sandbox limit does not reflect production entitlement. Check the current entitlement for the specific production org rather than extrapolating from the sandbox figure. Salesforce’s API limit guidance describes the distinction.

Limits can also differ by product and call path within one vendor. Salesforce documents a production REST limit of 2,000 LLM generations per minute per org for its Agentforce Models API, with model-specific variation; its Apex limits are 500 requests per hour in sandbox and 150 per hour in demo or trial orgs. Those figures apply to the named Salesforce interfaces and org types, not to Salesforce APIs generally or other AI services. Consult Salesforce’s Agentforce Models API rate-limit documentation for the relevant call path.
Test production-like data and security behavior
Sandbox fixtures and simulated responses may not capture the shape or behavior of real provider data. Plaid cautions that Sandbox may not reflect institution-specific quirks, can produce inconsistent values across product calls, and may differ in which side effects occur. Its Sandbox can allow http redirect URIs where Production requires https; Production also runs authentication checks that Sandbox does not. Some Sandbox flows omit OCR or image processing, and Sandbox does not send email or SMS. Review Plaid’s Sandbox documentation for those product-specific differences.
Build tests around assumptions your integration makes about the response and event stream. Use representative fixtures to check null or missing fields, pending records, identity checks, ordering, and event timing. These are testing practices, not guarantees that every provider behaves the same way. Validate security-sensitive settings—especially callback URLs and authentication—against the production rules before release.

Verify the exact webhook and side effect
A webhook test covers only the event and configuration path that was exercised. Zendesk copies webhook configurations into sandboxes but deactivates them by default to prevent unintended calls to live APIs; its sandbox also does not copy API tokens. Recreate the required test credentials and deliberately activate only safe test destinations. Zendesk’s sandbox documentation explains these defaults.
Plaid says most production webhooks also fire in Sandbox, but identifies exceptions, including Transfer and some Investments events. A passing test for one event therefore does not prove that every production event is emitted or handled identically. Check the provider’s event-specific documentation, then test the exact event, callback endpoint, signature verification, and downstream action you rely on. Plaid’s Sandbox guidance describes its webhook behavior.
Check timeouts and capture evidence safely
Production failures can arise because a downstream service responds too slowly for the integration’s runtime. Zendesk’s AI agents workspace times out API responses after 9 seconds; this is a Zendesk-specific limit, not a general API timeout. If the integration uses that workspace, compare the downstream response duration with this threshold and check whether work can be completed within the available window. See Zendesk’s generative AI agents FAQ.

For each failed request, retain the exact error body and code, request ID when available, timestamp with timezone, response duration, and the applicable account or rate limit. OpenAI recommends collecting the error details, request IDs, time and timezone, and relevant limit when escalating an API issue; see its 429 troubleshooting guidance. Redact API keys, bearer tokens, webhook signatures, and personal data before storing or sharing logs.
Use a production-readiness checklist
- Confirm the running deployment resolves to the production base URL and the intended production credential source.
- Verify organization entitlement, user permissions, scopes, and resource access using the target provider’s documentation.
- Estimate expected request and token volume, then compare it with the actual production limits for the relevant product and account.
- Exercise representative data, security checks, and the specific webhook events and side effects the integration depends on.
- Test timeout behavior and retry logic, including how the application handles 429 responses and non-retryable billing or quota failures.
- Capture redacted request IDs, errors, timestamps with timezone, and latency so production failures can be traced without exposing secrets.
Roll out with a recovery path
Where the system allows it, release to limited traffic or a staged group before enabling the integration broadly. Set alerts for failed requests, elevated latency, rate-limit responses, and missing expected events. Decide in advance who owns triage, what signal triggers a rollback, and how to return to the previous configuration. A small production rollout does not eliminate environment differences, but it gives the team a bounded way to observe them and recover.
