What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can start with either game; neither is a story prerequisite for the other. Choose Monster Hunter World if you want the earlier entry and a more deliberate first outing that continues into Iceborne. Choose Monster Hunter Rise if portability, quick-session play and acrobatic Wirebug movement matter more. If you have no strong preference, starting with World is a reasonable editorial default—not an objective ranking.
Do you need to play one before the other?
No. World and Rise are separate entries in the Monster Hunter series, and you do not need to finish one before starting the other. Both center on hunting monsters, using their materials and taking on hunts alone or cooperatively. Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto said the games “shine in different ways.” Capcom’s 2021 developer interview discusses the different design goals behind Rise.

What kind of first hunt do you want?
Choose World for a more deliberate first outing
World is the earlier of these two releases. Its premium expansion, Iceborne, continues the story from the base game’s ending, so this is the natural choice if you want that sequence. Capcom described World: Iceborne Master Edition as a package intended for players who had not yet experienced the base game. Capcom’s Iceborne announcement explains the expansion and Master Edition.
Choose Rise for portable play and faster movement
Capcom says Rise was designed with Nintendo Switch portability in mind, including the idea of picking up the game and completing a quest in spare time. Its Wirebug actions add aerial leaps, cliff climbing, fast traversal and special attacks for each of the 14 weapons, while Palamutes give hunters another way to move around. These features make Rise the clearer fit if you want more acrobatic movement and a portability-oriented design; they do not establish that it is universally easier. PlayStation’s platform announcement describes the Wirebug actions. Rise later came to PC and PlayStation and Xbox consoles, so its portability focus is about its design origins, not an exclusive current platform.
#1 Best Overall
- The debut of the new “wirebug” mechanic allows for wire-based grappling actions that can be used to scale cliffs and other hard-to-reach areas, providing new traversal and aerial attack options.
- The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
- New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
- In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.
- Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in local or online co-op play. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone!
How should you compare the editions?
If you are deciding between World + Iceborne and Rise + Sunbreak, compare the experience you want and the complete package—not just the base-game price.
| Decision point | World + Iceborne | Rise + Sunbreak |
|---|---|---|
| Movement and pace | A reasonable pick for a more deliberate first outing; no comparative difficulty ranking is established. | More emphasis on aerial mobility, traversal and Wirebug actions. |
| Portable play | Not listed for Nintendo Switch in Capcom’s platform information. | Designed with Nintendo Switch portability in mind; also released on other platforms. |
| Expansion role | Iceborne continues the story from World’s ending. | Sunbreak adds locales, monsters, hunting actions and quest rank. |
| Platforms listed by Capcom | PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Steam). | Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. |
| What to price | Base game plus Iceborne, checking the edition and platform compatibility. | Base game plus Sunbreak, checking the edition and platform compatibility. |

Rank #2
- Go on the hunt whenever and wherever you want, in Monster Hunter Rise for Nintendo Switch
- Explore wide areas in this spectacular action role playing game, launch wild monsters alone or with friends and forge the real weapons and armour
- A variety of giant monsters await you from fearsome new enemies such as Magnamalo to well known and popular monsters such as Tigrex and Mizutsune
- Gigantic blades, pointed lances, solid H mmer, bow rifles for long distance combat and more with a selection of 14 unique weapons you will find the equipment that suits your hunting style
- With the new rope you can ride through the air in no time at all and can ride monsters
What about playing with friends?
Both games are built around cooperative hunts as well as solo play. PlayStation’s announcement for Rise says hunts can include up to three other players; it specifically confirms PS4 and PS5 players can play together. That statement does not establish cross-play across all platforms, so check compatibility for the systems your group owns rather than assuming everyone can join the same hunt.

- Pick World if you want the earlier entry, prefer a more deliberate first outing, or want to follow its story into Iceborne.
- Pick Rise if handheld play, shorter-session convenience or Wirebug mobility is your priority.
- Compare the full package cost for the base game and its expansion, and verify the exact platform, edition and region before purchase.
- Do not choose based on a supposed universal difficulty order. The available official descriptions establish different design emphases, not a definitive easier game or a consensus first choice.
Capcom reported more than 25 million units worldwide for World and more than 15 million for Rise as of March 31, 2024; the World total includes shipments of the World: Iceborne Master Edition. In a June 4, 2025 announcement, Capcom said Sunbreak had exceeded 10 million cumulative units. Those figures show substantial reach, but sales do not tell you which game will suit you better.
