What to collect before reporting
Give responders a specific edit or pattern they can inspect. Include:

- The affected Wikimedia project and page title.
- The account or bot name and the approximate edit time or revision.
- A direct link to the revision diff.
- A short, factual description of what happened—for example, repeated unwanted changes or similar edits across several pages.
Monitoring-channel guidance also identifies the editor, edit summary, size change, and diff link as useful context. Avoid publishing private information or sensitive allegations that responders do not need. See Meta-Wiki’s IRC and abuse-monitoring channel information.

How to make the report
- Identify the project. Check which wiki contains the edit; Wikimedia projects have different local procedures.
- Open the revision diff. Copy its direct link and note the page, account name, and time or revision.
- Use the local reporting route. Find the affected project’s current vandalism-reporting page, administrator noticeboard, or help instructions. If the edit is still causing harm, contact a local administrator promptly.
- Escalate active or cross-wiki activity. Report it at Meta-Wiki’s vandalism reports board and contact an administrator or steward. Include the local reports or diffs that show the pattern.
- Keep sensitive cases private. For a username or information that may require suppression, use the local oversight team or stewards privately rather than a public noticeboard.
Describe the behavior, not just the automation
A bot is an automated or semi-automated process that edits with reduced or no direct human supervision. Automation by itself does not show that an edit is abusive: bots may perform legitimate tasks, and policies and implementations vary by project. Explain the observable problem—such as repeated unwanted edits, spam, or a similar pattern across pages—and let authorized responders assess whether it violates local or cross-project rules. The Global bot policy says bots must follow applicable policy and that noncompliant bots may be blocked until the operator resolves the problem.

What to expect from local and global response
Local patrolling, noticeboards, tools, staffing, and policies are not uniform across Wikimedia projects. Some communities use bots to revert edits; others use bots to flag changes for human review. Follow the affected project’s current instructions rather than assuming that a board or response process is identical everywhere.
Meta-Wiki’s Global AbuseFilter guidance describes a tool hosted on Meta-Wiki and operated by privileged users, including stewards and Meta administrators. It operates on most projects subject to opt-outs. The guidance says global filters should target patterns affecting multiple wikis, be as specific as possible, and remain enabled for the shortest possible time; these are instructions for authorized operators, not a step for ordinary reporters.

Meta-Wiki also lists IRC abuse-monitoring channels that may show suspicious edits and context such as the editor, edit summary, size change, and diff. These channels are described as unofficial, and their availability and activity can change. Use the vandalism reports board and administrator or steward contacts as the direct escalation route.
