The practical test is: When should an alert page someone, and when should it stay quiet? Page for actual or imminent user harm that needs a prompt response. Route useful but less urgent signals to dashboards, tickets, or a batched channel.
Decide what deserves a page
Start with the effect on users, not with whichever metric is easiest to alert on. Prometheus recommends alerting on symptoms associated with end-user pain and avoiding pages when there is no action to take. Its guidance puts it plainly: “Alerts should be urgent, important, actionable, and real.” Prometheus alerting practices

- Page: a user-facing failure or degradation that requires a human to respond promptly.
- Consider a page: a resource condition that credibly forecasts an imminent outage and gives the responder time to prevent it. Make clear that this is a forecast, not proof users are already affected.
- Do not page by default: a diagnostic cause, a low-urgency capacity trend, or a condition for which nobody has a useful response. Keep these signals available in dashboards or route them to an owned ticket queue.
Prometheus also cautions that “Not every alert needs to page someone.” The Zen of Prometheus captures the balance: “And don’t over alert, alert-fatigue is real.”

- Is there actual or imminent user harm? If not, a page is usually the wrong destination.
- Is a human response needed now? A signal that can wait belongs in a less urgent channel.
- Can the recipient take a defined action? If nobody knows what to do, improve ownership or the response guidance before paging.
- Has the condition lasted long enough to matter? Allow transient blips to settle where the risk permits.
- If it is not a page, where will it be seen? Keep non-urgent signals visible and assign an owner rather than silently discarding them.
A useful page should identify the affected service or symptom, explain why it needs attention, and point the responder toward an appropriate next step. Repeated pages that produce no action are a reason to review the condition, destination, or ownership.
Let noisy conditions settle before firing
A brief spike or scrape across a threshold may not justify interrupting someone. Prometheus alert rules support a for duration: a condition must remain true for the configured time before the alert is considered firing. Prometheus recommends leaving slack for small blips, but there is no single correct duration for every workload. Choose one according to how quickly the condition could harm users and how much delay the service can tolerate. Prometheus alerting rules

Persistence is not a substitute for good alert criteria. A sustained internal metric can still be non-urgent, while a rapidly worsening user-facing failure may need quick detection. Set the condition and its duration together, based on the response window and service risk.
Separate detection from notification
An alert rule answers whether a monitored condition is firing. Notification policy answers who is told, when, and in what form. Keeping those responsibilities distinct makes it possible to preserve evidence and useful signals without turning every event into an interruption.

In Prometheus, alert rules define firing conditions; Alertmanager handles notification concerns such as grouping, silencing, and dependencies. Alertmanager documentation describes grouping related alerts into more compact notifications, silencing alerts that match specified criteria, and inhibiting child alerts when a higher-level problem explains them. These controls can reduce duplicate messages without erasing the underlying signals.
- Group related alerts so one incident does not produce a flood of near-identical notifications.
- Inhibit secondary alerts when a more important active condition already explains them.
- Silence only with clear scope and a defined time limit; make active silences easy to review.
Use service objectives to balance speed and noise
A fixed threshold can tell you that a metric crossed a line, but it may not tell you whether the service is consuming its reliability budget at a pace that requires immediate action. When a service has a service-level objective (SLO), alerting on error-budget consumption can connect notifications to the reliability outcome the team is trying to protect.

Google’s SRE Workbook chapter on turning SLOs into alerts explains the tradeoff between detection and notification delay relative to the error budget. Its numerical scenarios are worked examples with stated assumptions, not general measurements of how often outages or alert fatigue occur. The useful principle is to choose a response window that catches meaningful budget burn while avoiding pages for inconsequential fluctuations.
Suppress notifications carefully
A snooze or disabled policy can reduce interruptions, but it can also prevent a real signal from reaching responders. Google Cloud Monitoring treats alert policies, incidents, and notification channels as distinct parts of its workflow. Its documentation says that, under the described behaviors, disabled or snoozed policies do not send notifications or create alerts. - After suppression expires, verify that alerting coverage is active again.
Review pages that do not lead to action
Noise is not only a question of how many notifications arrive. A page that is technically valid but has no actionable response still spends attention without helping the service. Review recurring pages with the people who receive them:
- Did the page correspond to user harm or a credible near-term risk?
- Was a response possible at the time it fired?
- Did a brief fluctuation trigger it, suggesting the condition needs persistence or better signal quality?
- Would grouping, inhibition, a different destination, or clearer ownership make it more useful?
- If it was suppressed, is the suppression still necessary, and has monitoring resumed?
The aim is not to make monitoring silent. It is to preserve the signals, make the quieter ones reviewable, and reserve interruption for conditions where a timely human response can matter.
