Confirm the emulator and the exact game
Public troubleshooting guides often refer to shadPS4, but its official project documentation calls it an early PS4 emulator and says its core does not include a GUI. RPCSX, by contrast, describes itself as experimental and says development is ongoing; its FAQ also notes that booting games from its VSH remains a work in progress. Neither description supports treating PS5 emulation as mature or assuming a fix for one project will work in another.

Start with the exact game’s entry in the project’s compatibility resource. Check its current status and game-specific issue before changing host settings: a game may fail because of an emulation limitation rather than a problem with your PC. The shadPS4 quickstart cautions that many games do not work and that even working games can have emulation issues.

Check whether your PC meets shadPS4’s minimum requirements
For shadPS4, the official quickstart requirements are a baseline, not a promise of smooth performance. Confirm each item against your system:

- Graphics: At least 2 GB of VRAM and Vulkan 1.3 support for
VK_KHR_swapchainandVK_KHR_push_descriptor. - Memory: At least 8 GB of RAM.
Meeting those minimums does not establish that a particular game will run well. The official documentation does not provide a guaranteed frame rate or a universal setting that fixes crashes, stutter, black screens, or graphical errors.
Update drivers and verify the active graphics card
Outdated graphics drivers can interfere with shadPS4. Update the drivers for the GPU you intend to use, and check for stale drivers associated with another GPU as well. On a system with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the installed build and operating system are directing the emulator to the intended GPU. A message such as “Emulator can’t detect my graphics card” is a reason to check driver status, Vulkan support, and GPU selection—not evidence by itself that new hardware is required.

Use logs to narrow down crashes and performance problems
If the game still fails, collect logs and reproduce the problem before reporting it. The shadPS4 developer documentation identifies the emulator’s user/log directory and names shadps4.log, shad_log.txt, and a game-specific log as useful files. Follow the project’s developer documentation for logging and diagnostic settings.

- For performance testing, start without debugging, as the developer documentation recommends.
- If diagnosing Vulkan behavior, consult the documentation’s validation-related settings and enable them only for diagnosis.
- Include the relevant log or error and the game and emulator versions when using the project’s issue tracker. A symptom alone—such as “it stutters” or “it crashes”—is harder to investigate.
Treat fixes as game- and version-specific
Emulation behavior can change between versions, and one game’s workaround may be irrelevant or harmful to another. Prefer instructions attached to the current game issue or release documentation. If no such guidance exists, avoid presenting a random setting change as a universal fix; the available official sources do not establish a single remedy for common symptoms.

Separate controller problems from compatibility problems
For shadPS4, official documentation says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box, and keyboard-and-mouse mappings can be customized. A “PS5 controller not working on Emulator” symptom is therefore a distinct input issue to investigate against the documentation for the emulator and build in use. Buying a controller is not a general fix for poor performance, crashes, or game incompatibility.
