A momentary push button changes its contacts only while you hold it; a spring returns it when you let go. A latching (or maintained) push button stays in its actuated state after release until you operate it again. Either type can use normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts—the button’s action and its contact arrangement are separate choices.
What do momentary and maintained mean?
Momentary: spring return
Pressing a momentary button changes its contact state for as long as the actuator is held. Releasing it lets the spring return the actuator, and the contacts return to their resting state. This action suits inputs that should be brief or require someone to keep pressing, such as start, jog, reset and hold-to-run controls.

Latching: retained action
A latching button stays actuated when released. It remains that way until it is operated again. This maintained action can suit an on/off control or mode selection where the button’s physical position should continue to show the selected state.

Normally open and normally closed describe the contact pair when the button is at rest, not whether the button is momentary or latching. Schneider Electric USA defines NO contacts as open when not actuated and closed when actuated; NC contacts are closed when not actuated and open when actuated. Read Schneider Electric USA’s NO and NC definitions.
#1 Best Overall
- This momentary button switch is made of durable stainless steel and aluminum alloy structure, with IP66 waterproof rating and IK09 resistance to damage, suitable for harsh environments.
- Momentary push button switch rated for 2A 12/24VDC and 1A 250VAC, ensuring reliable performance.
- Pre-wired with 20cm cables for quick and hassle-free installation in automotive, marine, or appliance applications.
- Rugged design withstands 100,000 electrical cycles, offering long-lasting durability and consistent operation.
- Normally open contact type with 0-250V operating range, ideal for industrial and commercial control systems.
- NO: open at rest; closes when actuated.
- NC: closed at rest; opens when actuated.
Both momentary and latching switches can be made with NO or NC contacts. Check the terminal markings and the manufacturer’s diagram for the exact switch; neither the button’s color nor its mechanical action tells you how its contacts are arranged.
How the two actions compare
| Question | Momentary | Latching / maintained |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when you release it? | A spring returns the actuator and contacts to their resting state. | The actuator and contact state remain changed until the button is operated again. |
| Typical control use | Start, jog, reset or hold-to-run input. | On/off control or mode selection. |
| Contact choice | Can be NO or NC. | Can be NO or NC. |
| What to consider after power loss | The released button does not determine what the whole control circuit does when power returns. | The button may remain latched while power is off; circuit design determines whether a command is re-energized when power returns. |
How to choose the right switch
- Decide whether the input should be temporary or retained. Choose momentary for an action that lasts only while pressed, or maintained when the selected state should persist after release.
- Select the contact state independently. Choose NO or NC based on the circuit’s requirements, then verify the exact terminals and contact diagram in the product documentation.
- Check how the whole control behaves. Consider power loss and restoration. A button alone does not establish whether a machine or load will restart; the control circuit determines that behavior.
- Verify the exact model’s specifications. Check its electrical switching ratings, number and type of contacts, mounting dimensions or panel cut-out, actuator style, illumination and required environmental protection. Options vary by product series, so do not generalize one model’s specifications to every push button.
- Confirm component compatibility. Some industrial product lines combine heads and contact blocks, but compatibility is model-specific. Confirm that the selected head and contact block are intended to work together.
Important safety distinction
A generic maintained push button is not automatically a safety-rated emergency-stop device. Emergency-stop equipment and the surrounding control system have requirements beyond the momentary-versus-latching distinction. Select and design safety controls for the applicable machine and local requirements; the simple action labels do not establish that a device is suitable for a safety function.
