A computer that will not turn on, complete POST, or show a picture may have a motherboard problem—but those symptoms can also come from the power supply, loose connections, processor, memory, graphics hardware, monitor, or cabling. No single symptom, light, or beep pattern proves the motherboard is bad. Start with safe external checks, then use diagnostics documented for the exact computer or board before replacing anything.
What motherboard failure can look like—and why symptoms are not proof
A motherboard fault can prevent startup or cause a system to behave unpredictably, but these outcomes are shared by other components and connection problems. The useful question is not just whether the PC has a familiar symptom; it is whether a sequence of checks isolates the board from other plausible causes.

- No power or fans: The outlet, power cord, power strip, PSU switch, PSU, case power switch, or motherboard power connections may be involved.
- Fans run, but there is no POST or display: The CPU, memory, graphics path, monitor, or motherboard may be involved. A spinning fan only shows that some power is present; it does not establish that the system completed POST.
- Intermittent startup or instability: Treat this as a broad hardware, connection, thermal, or power issue unless model-specific diagnostics point more clearly to a component. The available official guidance does not establish a universal symptom-specific way to distinguish these causes at home.
- Visible damage: Damage to the board is a reason to stop using the system and seek qualified assessment; do not probe or power a visibly damaged component.
Motherboards also differ in their diagnostic features and code meanings. A light or beep is useful only when interpreted against the documentation for the exact model.

Record what happens before changing anything
Write down the computer or motherboard model, any recent hardware or configuration changes, and what happens after pressing the power button. Note whether fans or lights turn on, whether a logo or error appears, and the exact sequence of diagnostic LEDs, beeps, or POST codes. These details help match the behavior to the right manual or support instructions.

Use the computer maker’s or board maker’s manual and support pages for the exact system. Do not assume a code chart for another model or manufacturer applies. Intel explains that POST and beep codes report hardware-test results and can help identify a likely stage of failure, but their meanings are vendor-specific: Intel’s guide to POST and beep-code clues.
Check power and display connections first
Begin with checks that do not require removing components. ASUS’s troubleshooting sequence covers power, core components, display, minimal-component testing, CMOS, and board indicators; follow the corresponding instructions for your own system: ASUS motherboard troubleshooting for no power, no boot, or no display.
- Confirm the outlet works, the power cord is firmly connected, and any power strip is switched on. Check that the PSU’s rear switch is on, if it has one.
- With the computer shut down and disconnected from power, check that the required motherboard power leads are seated as specified by the system or board manual. Common examples are the 24-pin motherboard lead and a CPU power lead; connector requirements vary.
- If the system powers on but shows no picture, confirm the monitor is on, set to the correct input, and connected by a working cable. Check that the cable is plugged into the intended graphics output for the system’s configuration.
- Do not open a power supply or handle internal components while the computer is powered. If you are unsure how to disconnect or inspect components safely, stop and use qualified service.
A failed PSU, poor connection, case switch, or short can imitate a motherboard fault. ASUS recommends checking power sources and connectors and, where appropriate, trying a known-good PSU. Use only a compatible unit and follow the manufacturer’s procedure; buying a replacement motherboard before isolating these possibilities can lead to replacing the wrong part.

If fans spin but the computer does not POST
Power reaching fans does not establish that the CPU has initialized or that the computer has completed its startup checks. Follow the exact system manual before reseating or substituting parts.
Memory and graphics
Check memory seating or test modules only as directed for the board. If the system uses a separate graphics card, check its seating and required power connections using the manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm that the display is connected to the graphics output the system is meant to use; not every processor provides usable onboard graphics.
Processor and compatibility
Check that the CPU and motherboard are compatible according to the system’s documentation. If recent changes preceded the failure, record them and consult model-specific support guidance. Do not remove or reseat a processor unless you know the procedure and can do so safely; mishandling can cause additional damage.

Minimal-component startup
A minimal-component test reduces the system to the parts required for startup, helping narrow the fault. Which parts are required and how to disconnect others depends on the machine. Use the board or computer manual rather than treating a generic component list as universal. Change one thing at a time and record the result so the test remains interpretable.
How to interpret diagnostic lights, POST codes, and beeps
Record the exact indicator and sequence, then look it up in the documentation for the same board or computer model. A diagnostic indicator can narrow the stage where startup stopped; it does not automatically identify a defective part. Intel describes POST and beep codes as cues from internal hardware checks, with meanings that depend on the vendor.
For example, Dell documents a beep-code case that can indicate a possible motherboard or chipset failure and directs users to run a preboot diagnostic test. That example is specific to Dell systems, not a universal code definition: Dell’s explanation of desktop beep codes.

Some systems support a buzzer or POST speaker, while others have another diagnostic method or no speaker installed. Consult the exact system documentation before considering a speaker; a separate one is not necessary for every PC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to clear CMOS or try another power supply
Clear CMOS only by the documented method
Clearing CMOS is one troubleshooting step in ASUS’s procedure, not proof that the motherboard is defective. Follow the board manual for the exact method and any precautions. Do not guess at jumper locations or use a procedure intended for another model.

Use a known-good PSU as an isolation test
If external power checks and connection checks do not resolve the issue, substituting a known-good, compatible PSU can help test whether the original unit is responsible. Follow the PSU and system instructions, and make sure the substitute is suitable for the computer. If you cannot safely perform the substitution, ask a qualified repair service.

When the evidence points toward repair or support
A motherboard becomes a stronger suspect when its model-specific indicators and documented troubleshooting steps continue to point to a board issue after other plausible causes have been checked. That is still different from proving the board has failed: component substitution and diagnosis may be needed to distinguish it from the PSU, CPU, memory, graphics hardware, or a connection fault.
- Contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support when its documented steps do not resolve the problem.
- Use a qualified repair service if there is visible damage, you are not comfortable handling internal parts, or the remaining tests require equipment or substitutions you do not have.
- Share the model, recent changes, exact startup behavior, and recorded diagnostic codes. This is more useful than reporting only that the computer “doesn’t work.”
ASUS advises contacting product support when its troubleshooting steps do not fix the issue. There is no universal home test or established failure-rate statistic in the cited manufacturer guidance that can determine from symptoms alone whether a board should be repaired or replaced.
