If the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare closes during launch or never opens on your Windows PC, start with free checks: close overlays and background apps, check the game’s listed requirements and your graphics driver, then repair the files through the launcher you use. If it still fails, isolate software conflicts rather than assuming you need new hardware. These steps are Activision’s documented guidance, not a guaranteed fix for every PC.
Confirm which Modern Warfare and launcher you have
This guide is for the original PC Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, not Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, or another Call of Duty release. Their requirements and support steps may differ. The original game has launcher-specific file repair, so first identify whether you start it from Steam or Battle.net.

Activision’s Modern Warfare support hub links to game-specific support and troubleshooting. Its known-issues page was updated June 21, 2024; the entry noted in that update concerned a PlayStation 5 installation issue, not a PC startup crash. That does not rule out a newer or unlisted PC problem. Check the live support hub for current notices.
Try the low-risk checks first
- Close unnecessary applications. Exit overlays, recording tools, input-remapping software, and other background apps, then try launching the game again. Activision warns that these programs can interfere with startup or gameplay, even if they are not actively being used when the game starts.
- Check ventilation. Make sure the PC has unobstructed airflow and is not overheating. Activision includes adequate ventilation among its crash checks.
- Update your graphics driver. Get the appropriate driver through the graphics-card maker’s official update method, then restart Windows and retry.
- Compare your PC with the game’s listed requirements. Activision’s Modern Warfare PC specifications page lists a minimum of Windows 10 64-bit version 1709 or higher, 8 GB RAM, 175 GB drive space, and a DirectX 12-compatible system. It gives Intel Core i3-4340 or AMD FX-6300 processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 / GTX 1650 or Radeon HD 7950 graphics with 2 GB video memory as examples. The page has no displayed publication date; these are the specifications it lists, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current Windows or driver configuration.
Repair the game files in your launcher
Activision’s PC troubleshooting guide, last updated October 27, 2019, gives separate repair steps for each launcher. Use the option that matches where you installed the game; file verification can find damaged or missing content, but it is not a guaranteed cure.

Steam’s general support guidance also recommends verifying game files for crashes or missing or damaged content. If verification reports and replaces files, wait for it to finish before testing another launch.
If it still crashes, isolate software conflicts
Change one thing at a time and retry the game so you can tell whether a change affected startup. Activision’s 2019 guide suggests the following checks, but naming an application does not establish that it is responsible on your PC. Because the guide is dated, confirm that any app-specific advice still applies to the version you use.

- Close nonessential background applications and overlays, then test the launch.
- Activision’s guide names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as programs to disable while troubleshooting. Temporarily close them rather than uninstalling them as a first step.
- If you use antivirus software, the guide suggests adding an exception for the game folder. Keep protection enabled; do not permanently disable antivirus or other security features.
- If you previously disabled Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), Activision’s guide suggests re-enabling it. Do not change security settings without understanding what you changed and how to restore them.
- If ordinary testing does not identify a conflict, use a Windows clean boot to start with a reduced set of startup services and applications. Follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions and record any changes so you can restore normal startup afterward.
Allow for first-run shader work
Activision’s October 27, 2019 troubleshooting guide says shader preloading is an important part of the first-boot process and warns that starting the game while it is underway may affect performance. If the game has opened and is processing shaders, let that work finish before judging performance. This advice does not establish that waiting will fix a crash that happens before the game opens; the example durations in the old guide should not be treated as current timing benchmarks.

Record what happens before escalating
Activision says PC crashes commonly occur while attempting to launch or during public multiplayer matches in its crash and game-freeze guidance, updated March 5, 2024. That makes startup failures relevant to its checks, but it does not identify the cause of an individual crash.

If the checks above do not resolve the problem, note the details that can distinguish a game-file issue from a configuration or software conflict:
- The exact error message, or that no message appeared.
- Whether the failure occurs before any window appears, at the splash screen, during shader loading, or after reaching the main menu.
- Whether you use Steam or Battle.net, plus your Windows version and graphics-driver version.
- Your CPU, graphics card, and RAM, and whether the PC meets the game’s page-listed minimums.
- Recent driver or software changes, and the result of each repair or conflict-isolation step.
Steam notes that some launch problems depend on a particular hardware and software configuration and may need an individual technician’s help. Its general guidance is available in Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”. That is a general Steam troubleshooting resource, not a Modern Warfare-specific diagnosis.
