Its brighter display and updated Wear OS package stand out on paper; independent reviewer Wareable found the smaller model’s battery improvement over Watch7 limited and described the new health and fitness features as uneven. Phone compatibility and Samsung-only features also matter before you buy.
What changed from the Galaxy Watch7?
Samsung introduced the Watch8 on July 9, 2025, and put it on general sale July 25, 2025. The standard model comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes. Its defining exterior change is a cushion-shaped case. Samsung says the redesign is 11% thinner than the previous generation, following a 30% improvement in component-mounting capability; those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. Wareable liked the refreshed appearance, but did not consider the comfort difference over Watch7 conclusive.

The most visible specification upgrade is the display’s claimed peak brightness: 3,000 nits for Watch8 against 2,000 nits for Watch7, according to Samsung UK. Battery capacity rises modestly, while listed weights also tick up slightly. These are nominal specifications and do not predict how long a watch will last between charges.
| Size | Watch8 | Watch7 |
|---|---|---|
| 40mm battery | 325mAh | 300mAh |
| 44mm battery | 435mAh | 425mAh |
| 40mm listed weight | 30g | 28.9g |
| 44mm listed weight | 34g | 33.8g |
| Peak brightness claim | 3,000 nits | 2,000 nits |
Comparison figures are from Samsung UK’s product comparison page. Wareable’s review of the smaller Watch8 edition found battery life barely improved over Watch7, so the larger capacity figures should not be read as a promise of longer real-world runtime.

How does it look and feel on the wrist?
The cushion case gives Watch8 a visibly different silhouette from Watch7, and Wareable’s reviewer considered the update successful aesthetically. Samsung lists both sizes at 8.6mm thick. The 40mm case measures 40.4 × 42.7mm and weighs 30g; the 44mm measures 43.7 × 46mm and weighs 34g. Those weights exclude any band.
The smaller option is the lighter choice, but the case shape alone does not establish that it will feel more comfortable on every wrist. If possible, try on the size you intend to wear; case diameter, band fit and personal preference all affect comfort.

How good is the software and health tracking?
Watch8 launched with Wear OS 6 and Samsung’s One UI 8 Watch. Samsung described the series as the first smartwatch to come out of the box with Google Gemini and Wear OS 6. Wareable praised the way Gemini, Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 work together, while giving a more qualified verdict on the health and fitness additions: its reviewer found the feature set uneven, with some capabilities restricted even among Android users.

Some important health functions require a Samsung phone, so a non-Samsung Android owner should check the feature-specific requirements rather than assume every watch function will be available. Samsung says health and wellness features are for general wellness and fitness, not for detecting, diagnosing or treating medical conditions or sleep disorders. Treat wellness scores as guidance, not clinical diagnoses.
Will the Galaxy Watch8 work with your phone?
Samsung’s compatibility information differs by region. The global launch specification says Android 12.0 or later and more than 1.5GB of memory. Samsung UK’s comparison page says Android 11 or later with Google Mobile Services and at least 1.5GB RAM. Because these official requirements are not identical, check the compatibility page for your country and your specific phone before buying. Samsung also says certain AI features require a Galaxy smartphone and a Samsung account.

Should you choose the Watch8 or Watch8 Classic?
The Classic is the more hardware-led option, with a rotating bezel, a quick button, a stainless-steel case, 64GB of storage and a 445mAh battery. It comes in one 46mm size and Samsung lists its weight as 63.5g, making it substantially heavier than either standard Watch8 size.
| Choose the standard Watch8 if… | Choose the Watch8 Classic if… |
|---|---|
| You want a lighter watch in 40mm or 44mm. | You value a rotating bezel and quick button. |
| You prefer the cushion-case design and simpler styling. | You prefer the stainless-steel case and accept the additional weight. |
| 32GB of storage meets your needs. | You want the Classic’s listed 64GB storage. |
The Classic’s battery capacity is a specification, not evidence that it lasts longer in everyday use. Samsung’s launch specifications are the basis for the hardware differences above.

Is the Galaxy Watch8 worth buying?
For a new smartwatch buyer who wants Samsung’s current Wear OS experience in a lighter, conventional design, Watch8 makes sense—provided the intended phone supports the features you need. Watch7 owners have less reason to rush: the brighter display and case refresh are tangible changes, but the modest battery-capacity increases did not translate into a meaningful improvement in Wareable’s smaller-model testing. Consider the Classic only if its physical controls and added storage are worth the extra weight to you.
