Modern Warfare 4 controller settings: a beta-era guide to aim assist, sensitivity and dead zones

For the Modern Warfare 4 beta, start with the Dynamic response curve, keep Target Aim Assist enabled, and set each stick’s minimum deadzone to the lowest value that eliminates drift. Use one of the published sensitivity baselines below, then change only one control at a time in a repeatable practice drill. These are provisional EA.1-era recommendations, not a verified universal best setting.

Quick-start settings for the Modern Warfare 4 beta

Two current beta guides cluster around moderate-to-fast sensitivity, while another uses a different in-game scale. That disagreement is important: a number copied from one guide may not represent the same physical stick speed in another scale. Use the values below as starting points for your own controller, not as performance guarantees.

Published setup Horizontal / vertical sensitivity ADS multiplier Response curve Aim-assist setting Best use
SCUF Gaming guide, September 21, 2026 1.65 / 1.65 0.95–1.00 Dynamic Use Target Aim Assist while testing Faster turning for players comfortable with higher camera speed; guidance applies similarly on PS5 and Xbox
iTechGuides, October 19, 2026 1.50 / 1.50 0.85 Dynamic Use Target Aim Assist while testing More controlled baseline for tracking and micro-adjustments
Tier1Settings, 2026 6 0.90 Dynamic Standard aim assist Alternative scale and aim-assist terminology; useful for comparison, not a direct conversion

The first two rows are explicitly beta or pre-launch recommendations. Tier1Settings’ “6” sensitivity demonstrates why you should compare the feel of a setting rather than assume that 6 equals 1.50 or 1.65. The game’s scale, menu labels and defaults may change between EA.1 and the launch build.

What each controller setting changes

Horizontal and vertical sensitivity

Horizontal sensitivity controls the speed of left-right camera movement; vertical sensitivity controls up-down movement. Matching them creates a predictable feel when you turn, track a sliding opponent or pull down against recoil. A higher value lets you turn on a flanker quickly but makes small corrections more abrupt. A lower value gives steadier fine aim but can force you to lift and reset the stick during close-range fights.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Start with equal horizontal and vertical values unless you have a specific reason to separate them. If your horizontal turns are consistently late while vertical recoil control is stable, raise horizontal sensitivity alone by the smallest available increment. If your reticle jumps above or below a target during recoil compensation, lower vertical sensitivity rather than changing both axes.

ADS sensitivity multiplier

The ADS multiplier scales camera movement while aiming down sights. A value below 1.00 slows scoped or iron-sight movement relative to hip-fire, which can make tracking at medium range easier. A value close to 1.00 preserves more of your hip-fire speed and helps when targets cross your screen quickly, but it demands more precise thumb control.

Choose the lower published baseline if you over-correct while tracking. Move toward the higher range if you cannot keep up with strafing targets or frequently run out of stick travel. Test the multiplier with the same weapon and optic each time; changing magnification at the same time makes the result harder to interpret.

Response curve

Dynamic is the common starting curve in the current guides. It changes how output speed builds as you move the stick, giving a slower response around small movements and more turning speed as the stick travels farther. That combination can help with micro-adjustments while retaining the ability to rotate quickly.

Standard is also reported, including the Tier1Settings setup, and Linear is another available style in controller menus. Standard generally feels more direct and familiar to players coming from older settings. Linear gives a more uniform relationship between stick movement and camera output, which some players prefer for consistent muscle memory but which can expose small hand tremors. Keep one curve selected while testing sensitivity; switching curves changes the feel enough to invalidate a direct comparison.

Minimum deadzone

The minimum deadzone is the amount of stick movement the game ignores around the center position. A larger deadzone hides drift but delays the first movement. A smaller deadzone gives faster response and finer control until the stick begins moving on its own.

There is no reliable universal deadzone because two controllers of the same model can wear differently. The practical target is the lowest value at which the reticle and character remain still when you release both sticks. The iTechGuides guidance describes this as the lowest setting that does not cause drift. Tier1Settings lists 0.05 as its example, but that number should not be treated as a requirement for every controller.

Aim assist

Keep Target Aim Assist enabled for initial testing. Turning it off while you are still choosing sensitivity changes the task you are measuring and makes comparisons misleading. Target-based assistance is intended to help maintain tracking near an opponent; it does not remove the need to control recoil or lead moving targets.

Standard aim assist appears in the Tier1Settings alternative. Because the guides use different labels, check the exact option names shown in your build instead of assuming that two similarly named modes behave identically. If a later patch renames or reorganizes these options, record the new label before comparing settings.

Vibration and trigger effects

Controller vibration and adaptive trigger effects are preference settings, not aim multipliers. Dot Esports recommends disabling them when the feedback distracts you or makes recoil control inconsistent. If the extra resistance and vibration do not disturb your timing, leaving them enabled is reasonable. Test with the same choice for every trial so the physical feedback does not become an uncontrolled variable.

How to tune your controller step by step

  1. Record your setup. Write down whether you play on PS5, Xbox or PC, the controller model, the current Modern Warfare 4 patch or EA.1 build, and your existing settings. A setting that works on a fresh stick may fail on a worn one.
  2. Set a stable test baseline. Select one response curve, preferably Dynamic for the first pass, and enable Target Aim Assist. Do not change the curve between trials.
  3. Choose a sensitivity starting point. Use either the controlled 1.50/1.50 baseline with a 0.85 ADS multiplier or the faster 1.65/1.65 baseline with a 0.95–1.00 multiplier. If your menu uses a different scale, choose the closest moderate setting and record the exact displayed value rather than converting it by guesswork.
  4. Find the left-stick minimum deadzone. Release the stick while the character is standing still. Lower the value one step at a time until the character begins to move, then raise it slightly until movement stops. Repeat after rotating the stick through its full range, because wear can be uneven.
  5. Find the right-stick minimum deadzone. Repeat the same process while watching the reticle. Stop when the reticle remains stationary at rest. Do not copy the left-stick value automatically; the two sticks can have different wear.
  6. Run a repeatable drill. Use the same practice area, weapon, optic and target distance. Track a moving target, make small left-right corrections, perform a 180-degree turn, and control a short recoil burst. Repeat the sequence several times before judging the setting.
  7. Change one value only. If tracking feels slow, increase sensitivity or the ADS multiplier, not both. If micro-aim is unstable, reverse the smallest recent change. Keep the setting that improves repeated runs rather than the one that feels quickest in a single turn.
  8. Recheck after a restart or patch. Confirm that the game retained every value. Beta updates can alter labels, defaults or scale behavior, so a previously comfortable number may need to be retested.

How to choose between the published baselines

Choose the controlled baseline when precision is the problem

The 1.50/1.50 and 0.85 ADS combination is the better first test if you lose targets during small corrections, over-pull recoil or play mostly medium- and long-range engagements. Its slower ADS movement gives your thumb more room to stop on a target. It can feel sluggish in a close-range fight, so evaluate it with both tracking and rapid-turn portions of the drill.

Choose the faster baseline when turning speed is the problem

The 1.65/1.65 and 0.95–1.00 ADS combination suits players who consistently arrive late to a target crossing the screen or who need faster 180-degree turns. The higher ADS range preserves more camera speed while aiming. If your reticle oscillates around targets, lower the ADS multiplier before abandoning the faster hip-fire sensitivity.

Handle the “6” scale as a separate system

Tier1Settings’ sensitivity 6, ADS 0.90 and 0.05 deadzone cannot be converted reliably from the decimal values without an official scale map. Treat it as a separate preset. Compare the time required to turn, stop and track in the drill, not the number printed in the menu.

Deadzone troubleshooting

The reticle drifts while the controller is untouched

Raise the affected stick’s minimum deadzone one increment and test again. If drift continues at a high value, inspect the controller, reconnect it and check for firmware or calibration options on your platform. A deadzone can mask mild wear, but it cannot repair a failing stick.

The reticle feels delayed after raising deadzone

Reduce the deadzone one step at a time until the delay disappears without reintroducing visible drift. Do not compensate for a delayed right stick by sharply increasing sensitivity; that often produces fast but unstable micro-aim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one direction feels inconsistent

Uneven wear can make a single direction respond differently. Test slow circles and straight-line movements, then use the smallest deadzone that keeps the reticle still in every direction. If no value provides both stability and response, the controller condition is the limiting factor rather than the sensitivity setting.

Platform and controller considerations

The SCUF Gaming guide states that its recommendations apply similarly on PS5 and Xbox, but platform parity does not guarantee identical hardware behavior. PC players may also have an operating-system or launcher layer that changes controller recognition. Disable extra remapping or acceleration layers while tuning so the in-game values are the only variables.

Record the exact controller model and whether it uses standard sticks, taller thumbsticks or paddles. Paddles can reduce the need to remove your thumbs during jumps or slides, but they do not change the game’s sensitivity scale. A worn stock controller may require a higher deadzone than a new controller, while a different stick height can change the physical effort needed for the same on-screen movement.

What is known—and what is not—about “best” settings

No controlled benchmark establishes one best Modern Warfare 4 controller setup. The available figures are recommendations from third-party guides published during the beta or pre-launch period, not measured win-rate, accuracy or reaction-time results. Their disagreement is evidence that player preference, controller condition and the game’s scale matter more than a single copied number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EA.1 and later beta patches can change menu labels, defaults, aim-assist behavior or sensitivity scaling. An official Activision launch-build controller-settings page was not available in the material used for these recommendations. Recheck the final release notes and verify every label in your own settings menu before treating a beta preset as permanent.

A practical decision checklist

  • Target Aim Assist is enabled while you compare settings.
  • One response curve stays selected for the entire test session.
  • Horizontal and vertical sensitivity are equal unless a specific tracking problem justifies separating them.
  • Each stick has its own lowest drift-free minimum deadzone.
  • The same weapon, optic, target distance and drill are used for every trial.
  • Only one value changes between trials.
  • Vibration and trigger effects are disabled if they interfere with recoil control; otherwise they remain a personal choice.
  • Your notes include platform, controller, patch and displayed scale.
