Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) is using a lot of CPU, start by checking whether shader preloading is still running. Then test for background-software conflicts, repair the game files, and try a controlled frame-rate cap. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes: the cause depends on when the usage rises and what the rest of the PC is doing.
Make sure you are troubleshooting the right Modern Warfare
This guide is for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), also called MW2019—not Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Warzone, or the separately announced Modern Warfare 4. The games have distinct support pages and requirements. Activision’s Modern Warfare support hub identifies the 2019 title.

Note which launcher you use, your Windows version, and the game build. Also observe when CPU use rises: during shader preparation, in menus, or in a match. A percentage on its own cannot establish that the CPU is faulty or that it needs replacing.

Activision says shader preloading is an important part of the game’s first boot and warns that entering a mode before it finishes may affect performance. The game displays an orange or red shader indicator while compilation is underway. If it is still visible, let the process complete before judging performance. Activision’s PC troubleshooting article says players can load into the game during preloading, but may see reduced performance.

The same 2019 article reported shader-preloading averages from six example systems ranging from 8 minutes 2 seconds to 37 minutes 12 seconds. Those are historical examples, not current benchmarks or a reliable estimate for your PC.
Isolate background software before changing hardware
Activision’s troubleshooting guidance recommends closing potentially interfering applications and services. It names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as programs that can conflict in some cases, and advises updating Razer Synapse. Treat them as candidates to test, not as confirmed causes on every system.
- Close monitoring, overlay, and peripheral-control applications you do not need, then test the same game scene again.
- If the issue continues, use a Windows clean boot to check whether a background service or startup app is involved. Re-enable items methodically after testing so you can identify a possible conflict.
- Compare CPU use and frame pacing under the same conditions. If the problem disappears only when an application or service is disabled, investigate that item rather than making broad system changes.
Activision recommends a clean boot if the issue persists. Its article was published on 2019-10-27, so the listed software names are troubleshooting leads rather than confirmation of a current, universal conflict.

Repair or verify the installation
Damaged or missing game files can cause problems, although Activision does not establish file repair as a universal high-CPU fix. Use the repair option for your launcher:
- Battle.net: use Scan and Repair from the game’s options.
- Steam: use “Verify the integrity of game files” in the game’s properties.
Let the check finish, then launch the game and compare performance in the same situation as before.
Test a frame-rate limit
Modern Warfare’s PC settings include configurable frame-rate limits. Activision documented gameplay and menu limits in its 2019 PC beta settings post. Setting a cap near a rate your system can sustain is a reasonable, reversible diagnostic experiment: it may reduce unnecessary rendering work, but it is not a guaranteed CPU fix.

- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
- Record the frame rate and frame-time behavior in a repeatable scene.
- Set a gameplay limit close to the rate the PC sustains in that scene; adjust the menu limit separately if menu usage is the main concern.
- Repeat the same test and compare CPU use, frame rate, and frame pacing. Keep the cap only if the overall result is better for your use.
Because the documented post covers the beta-era settings, exact labels may differ by game build. Change one setting at a time so the comparison remains useful.
Tell CPU load apart from network lag
High CPU utilization is a local performance measurement; ping, packet loss, rubber-banding, and delayed hit markers are network symptoms. Activision’s lag and in-game performance guidance discusses connection issues. A wired connection may improve network reliability, but Ethernet or router changes do not diagnose or directly fix high CPU usage.

Steam’s current listing for the game gives Windows 10 64-bit and DirectX 12, with a minimum Intel Core i3-4340 or AMD FX-6300 and a recommended Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, plus 12 GB of RAM for the recommended specification. See Steam’s Modern Warfare technical support and requirements page. These are system requirements, not a CPU-usage threshold or proof that a replacement is necessary. Activision’s separate 2019 beta-era post lists different requirements; Steam’s current listing is the more relevant requirements reference here.

Before spending money, collect measurements that can distinguish a CPU bottleneck from a thermal, graphics, or software issue:
- CPU model, total and per-core utilization, temperature, and clock behavior
- GPU utilization, frame rate, and frame-time behavior
- Whether the load occurs in menus, during shader preparation, or in matches
- Launcher, Windows version, game build, and driver version
- Whether closing background software or performing a clean boot changes the result
Microsoft notes generally that games can be CPU-limited even when paired with a high-performance GPU, but that does not diagnose this game or a particular PC. Its Windows titles performance discussion provides general context, not a Modern Warfare-specific threshold. The cited sources do not establish a percentage at which CPU use becomes unhealthy or a success rate for these fixes. A cooler is relevant only if measurements show a thermal problem; an upgrade requires evidence of a system-level bottleneck.
