In the reported MrMacRight comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max leads the iPhone 17 Pro Max in several demanding games, but the advantage depends on the title and settings. The clearest differences appear in selected frame-rate results and long-session performance; they do not amount to a win in every game. Both phones also encounter limits, including unstable frame pacing with ray tracing in Control and high heat in Resident Evil 4.
What the seven-game comparison tested
Jason Filankembo’s October 6, 2026, report for iPhon.fr describes a MrMacRight comparison of the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The seven named tests were Control Ultimate Edition, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, GRID Legends, Tomb Raider (2013), Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and the Spaceship AAA benchmark.

The available coverage gives specific results for only some of those tests. It does not establish a full scorecard for all seven, so the named games without reported figures cannot be treated as wins or losses.
Where the reported results show a difference
Control Ultimate Edition
iPhon.fr reports that one configuration held a 60 fps cap, while higher graphics settings ran at 37–38 fps with little variation. Ray tracing made frame pacing less stable on both phones. The reported results therefore point to graphics settings—not just the phone generation—as a factor in how smooth the game feels.

Resident Evil 4
In the shorter comparison reported by iPhon.fr, the iPhone 18 Pro Max reached 40 fps at 1320p with MetalFX Quality, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max stayed below 30 fps in what the article describes as the same configuration. The report also notes substantial heat on both devices.
Death Stranding
For high settings at 1955×900, iPhon.fr reports about 42 fps on the newer phone and 36 fps on the older one. A separate extended-session report from Muhammed Kayan at Technotoday describes a different test at 900p and High settings: roughly 40 fps versus 32–33 fps at the start, then about 37 fps versus 24.5 fps after approximately 34 minutes and 40 seconds. These are separate reported tests, not measurements to combine into one result.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage
In the reported high-settings test at 2868×1320, both phones were locked to 30 fps. That result shows no frame-rate advantage for the newer model in this particular setup.

The iPhon.fr report names these tests but does not provide selected performance figures for them. No specific comparative result can be drawn from the available coverage.

What the longer sessions add
Muhammed Kayan’s October 7, 2026, Technotoday article describes extended tests that track performance as the phones heat up. In its Resident Evil 4 Remake test at 1320p, Balanced graphics, and MetalFX Quality, it reports that the iPhone 17 Pro Max reached the “Fair” thermal state after 2 minutes 39 seconds, compared with 8 minutes 13 seconds for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The newer phone reached the reported “Serious” state at 14 minutes 13 seconds.
At about 34 minutes in that Resident Evil 4 test, Technotoday reports frame rates changing from roughly 44 to 35 fps on the iPhone 18 Pro Max and from about 35 to 26 fps on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. These thermal labels are not temperature readings, and the article does not establish a standardized temperature measurement.

The extended Death Stranding figures also show a larger gap later in the session than at the start: about 40 versus 32–33 fps initially, and around 37 versus 24.5 fps after roughly 34 minutes and 40 seconds. They suggest the newer phone maintained a higher reported frame rate in that described test, not that every game or session will behave the same way.
How much confidence to place in the figures
The numbers are observations from a creator’s comparison as relayed by secondary publications, not independently reproduced laboratory results. The available reports do not establish standardized ambient temperature, repeat counts, or a complete device configuration beyond the settings they describe. Small differences between reports should be read in light of their distinct test spans and settings.

That matters most when comparing a brief result with a long-session result: a frame rate measured near the start does not answer how the phone will perform after half an hour. Likewise, a thermal-state label should not be converted into a specific device temperature.
What this means if you are deciding whether to upgrade
The reported comparison supports a limited conclusion: the iPhone 18 Pro Max can be faster in several of the selected tests, and it held higher reported frame rates later in the described extended sessions. The size of the difference varies. Assassin’s Creed Mirage was capped at the same 30 fps on both phones, while ray tracing challenged frame pacing on both in Control.
For a gaming-focused upgrade decision, weigh the improvement in the particular games you play against the price difference between generations. Also consider sustained performance, graphics settings, resolution, heat during long sessions, and whether the AAA titles you care about are available on iPhone. The reports show performance differences, but they do not establish that those differences alone justify an upgrade for every player.
