Where to customize Houdini hotkeys
Open Edit > Hotkeys to search for Houdini actions and inspect or change their assignments. Use the filter box to search by action name, or hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift and click a UI item to jump to its hotkey entry. You can also search by key, add or remove a mapping, and save changes in a keymap. Check context before changing a binding
Houdini hotkeys are organized by context, not as one universal application-wide list. The same key may perform different actions in different contexts, and a more specific context can take precedence over a broader one. Check the context shown for the action, then test the shortcut in the viewer or tool where you intend to use it. The Hotkey Manager warns when a key is already assigned in a related context; decide whether that overlap is acceptable before saving.
Save a keymap and account for keyboard layout
You can save a separate custom keymap and switch between keymaps. Houdini’s shipped default targets a US keyboard layout, so some default bindings may not work on layouts that lack the relevant unmodified keys. If a shortcut is unavailable or inconvenient, search by action and choose a key that works on your layout and does not create an unwanted conflict.

What changes across Houdini versions
Keymap behavior depends on the Houdini release, particularly if you are carrying forward an older customized setup.

For migration details and the current version-specific procedure, use SideFX’s hotkey documentation. Do not assume that a keymap file or workaround from an earlier Houdini release will behave the same in a newer one.

Which interface settings belong to Houdini
Houdini’s general interface settings are separate from the hotkey editor and from any controls supplied by Modeler. SideFX’s configuration guide points to distinct controls for interface scale, colors, and viewport or display behavior.
- UI scale: Use Edit > Preferences > General user interface to adjust interface scaling for readability. Houdini also supports the
HOUDINI_UISCALEenvironment variable. - Colors: Open Edit > Color settings for color customization.
- Viewport and display: Adjust viewport behavior and display options in their respective Preferences and Display Options controls. View tumbling, the viewport background, and handle appearance are separate choices rather than hotkey settings.
These are Houdini-level settings. Do not treat them as Modeler preferences unless the documentation for the particular Modeler version identifies them that way.

What is known about Modeler’s shortcuts and gestures
A June 17, 2025 CG Channel report on Alexey Vanzhula’s Modeler 2025.2 described a redesigned hotkey layout, configurable left- and right-button context-menu gestures, and quick shading presets. The report said Modeler 2025 was compatible with Houdini 20.5; that dated compatibility statement does not establish compatibility with later Houdini releases or confirm the current Modeler version. Check the vendor’s current documentation or the report’s vendor-store reference for current product information.
The same report described version-specific binding changes: transformation keys changed from T/R/E to W/E/R, and selection keys used 1/2/3 for points, edges, and faces. Treat these as historical details for the reported release, not universal Modeler instructions. Before relying on them, verify the controls in the Modeler version you have installed.

A practical way to avoid shortcut conflicts
- Identify the action. In Houdini, open Edit > Hotkeys and search for the action by name, or use Ctrl+Alt+Shift-click on its UI control.
- Inspect its context. Note whether the action belongs to a broad or tool-specific context and look for the Hotkey Manager’s related-context conflict warning.
- Choose where the change belongs. Change a Houdini action in Houdini’s keymap. For a Modeler-specific gesture or shortcut, consult the controls documented for your installed Modeler release rather than assuming Houdini’s editor configures it.
- Save and test in place. Save the keymap, activate the intended viewer or tool, and test the binding there. If another action fires, revisit the context and conflict rather than assuming the key is globally reserved.
