Real-time mobile personalization is a data-to-decision-to-render loop, not a guarantee that every screen changes instantly. Collect relevant interactions, make identity and consent explicit, retrieve a configuration or decision, render it through app-owned or vendor-provided UI, and measure what users actually see and do. The loop must be designed separately for each platform: SDK coverage, lifecycle behavior, refresh mechanisms, and rendering ownership are not interchangeable.
How the personalization loop works
Start with a specific app behavior that may safely vary, such as which eligible card appears in a home-screen slot. The app needs safe defaults and a clear contract for which response values and components it can render. A decision service cannot make unsupported UI appear in the client.

- Collect interaction signals. Define the events that represent useful behavior, such as a qualifying view, selection, or completed task. Keep event names and meaning consistent across platforms.
- Associate signals with identity and consent. Decide whether the user is anonymous or known, how identity changes are handled, and whether collection or personalization is currently allowed.
- Send signals to a decision or configuration service. The service may return values for an app-defined parameter, select among eligible alternatives, or provide content for a placement.
- Validate and render the response. Check that the response is supported, complete, and safe for the current app state. Use a local default or the last valid value if a fetch fails or the device is offline.
- Record exposure and outcome separately. A component being created is not necessarily evidence that it was visible. Track the event that represents actual exposure as precisely as the platform and integration allow, then record the outcome used to evaluate the experience.
Salesforce describes one product-specific split: Personalization returns targeted content, while Data 360 captures interactions and supports identity resolution, consent, and behavioral data. That is an example of separating decisioning from data collection, not a requirement that every architecture use those products. Salesforce Personalize Mobile Experiences

| Approach | What it decides or delivers | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Remote configuration | App-readable parameters, potentially targeted to all users or defined segments; developers control when fetched values are activated. | Change supported app behavior or appearance without requiring an app update, provided the app already knows how to interpret the values. Firebase documents feature flags, rollouts, A/B tests, and personalization as uses of Remote Config. Firebase Remote Config |
| Per-user personalization | Select among alternatives for an individual according to a measurable objective. | Use when a meaningful experience can differ by person, the objective can be expressed using Analytics events, and continuous optimization is acceptable. Firebase recommends this when human review is not required. Firebase Remote Config personalization |
| Fixed-window A/B testing | Compare alternatives over a defined period and evaluate results before choosing a shared direction. | Prefer it when you need a fixed evaluation window, deliberate trade-offs among competing metrics, statistical significance before rollout, a shared optimum, or manual review. These are Firebase’s stated reasons to choose conventional A/B testing over personalization. Firebase’s comparison of personalization and A/B testing |
| Push or in-app messaging | Deliver a communication or engagement experience, rather than simply provide a general configuration value. | Use when the requirement is to reach or engage a user through messaging. Salesforce documents Engagement SDK integrations for Android, iOS, Cordova, React Native, and Flutter; that product coverage should not be treated as proof that all vendors or features support the same targets. Remote configuration is the delivery and control mechanism; personalization is a strategy for choosing among configured alternatives. An optimization target should represent the intended user outcome, not merely the easiest event to increase. Firebase documents the mechanics and decision criteria, not a guaranteed business uplift.
What “real-time” means in a mobile app
Real-time describes an update path and latency goal, not uninterrupted delivery under every lifecycle condition. Firebase’s Flutter real-time Remote Config guide describes a listener that keeps an HTTP connection open while the app is foregrounded. When a newer server template is published, the client receives an invalidation, fetches the update, and invokes the listener. The guide recommends an initial fetch and listening during the active session; the callback can be an appropriate place to activate updated values. Firebase real-time Remote Config for Flutter

The connection stops when the app is backgrounded and resumes when it returns to the foreground. Therefore, do not rely on that listener as guaranteed background delivery or as a reason to bypass ordinary lifecycle refresh and fallback behavior. For Firebase’s service, the same guide lists a limit of 20 million concurrent open connections; if incremental requests are rejected, SDK clients fall back to standard fetch. Treat that as a vendor service limit, not an app-wide capacity promise.

Activating every change immediately can alter a screen while someone is using it; delaying activation until a safe boundary can avoid a jarring transition. Keep defaults available before network access, cache valid values as appropriate, and define what the interface does when a fetch fails. Firebase documents defaults, fetching, caching, and developer-controlled activation in its Remote Config overview.

Platform coverage is not interchangeable
Choose an implementation by the actual SDK and framework integration for each target, not by assuming that one product’s native capability automatically exists in every cross-platform wrapper.

Plan identity, consent, and measurement before rendering
Make consent a decision gate
Model consent as part of the decision flow, not as an analytics setting to add later. The app should know what happens before opt-in, after opt-in, and if a user withdraws consent or changes identity. Salesforce’s Flutter Low-Code Integration guide explicitly says personalization must remain disabled until the user opts in. Salesforce Flutter Low-Code Integration guide

Use consistent event definitions
Write down what counts as an impression, a click, and a successful outcome. Distinguish a viewable exposure from a component mount or render callback; otherwise, an optimization or experiment may learn from events that do not mean what the team thinks they mean. The Salesforce Flutter guide describes built-in View and Click as its supported end-to-end actions and cautions that View is a mount/render event, not verified on-screen visibility. This is specific to that integration, but the measurement distinction applies to any app-owned instrumentation.
Keep client-visible values safe
Never place secrets or confidential values in remote parameters readable by an app instance. Firebase warns that values available to the client can be accessed by end users. Treat remote configuration as input to a client, validate values before use, and keep authorization decisions and secret material on a trusted server. Firebase Remote Config security guidance

A practical implementation sequence
- Define the eligible variation. Specify which app-owned surface can vary, which values or components are allowed, and what should appear if there is no decision. Avoid remote changes that would require code the installed app does not contain.
- Set defaults and safe activation points. Make the app usable before a fetch completes. Decide whether new values activate immediately, at the next screen entry, or at another safe boundary.
- Choose the decision method. Use segment or parameter targeting for defined groups; use per-user optimization only when the goal is measurable and continuous adaptation suits the product; use fixed-window testing if deliberate review or a shared decision is needed.
- Implement lifecycle-aware fetching. Fetch at a sensible startup or session boundary, handle failures and offline state, and refresh when the app returns to the foreground. If using Firebase Flutter real-time updates, initialize the listener during an active session and activate only the relevant changes at a safe point.
- Define identity and consent transitions. Specify whether anonymous activity can be collected, when identity is attached, and whether a consent or identity change requires a new fetch. Do not assume a framework widget will refresh itself after context changes.
- Instrument exposure and outcomes. Record the actual events used for evaluation, with exposure semantics that match what happened on screen. Review that instrumentation separately for each platform integration.
- Test failure and transition paths. Check initial launch without network, stale cached values, rejected or malformed responses, background-to-foreground return, opt-out, identity change, and a value change while a relevant screen is visible.
For an individualized test, provide at least two plausible alternatives and choose an Analytics-measurable objective. Avoid choosing a convenient proxy if it conflicts with the outcome the experience is meant to improve. No cited source establishes a universal latency target or conversion, retention, or revenue lift, so set service-level expectations and evaluate results for your own app rather than promising a numerical benefit.
Salesforce’s Flutter low-code path: details to verify
The Salesforce Flutter guide describes a low-code plugin that bridges native iOS and Android SDKs. It is an implementation example, not a general description of how Flutter plugins work. Its reviewed compatibility baseline lists Flutter 3.19 or later, Dart 3.3 or later, Android API 26 minimum, Java 17, Gradle 8.13, compile SDK 37, Kotlin Gradle plugin 2.3.0, Android Gradle Plugin 8.13.2, Swift 5.7, and iOS deployment target 15.0 or later. These are the requirements listed in that guide and may change; confirm the current compatibility matrix before adopting them. Salesforce Flutter Low-Code Integration guide
In that integration, native SDK initialization must happen before a ContentZone attempts to fetch content. Content zones also need a matching server-side zone and allowed components. The guide notes that recommendation cards are built eagerly and are not internally scrollable; it also says context or identity changes do not automatically trigger a refetch in the documented widget. Plan an explicit refresh after consent or identity has been settled when the flow requires it, and ensure the app—not an assumed automatic refresh—owns that transition.

The app still owns consent handling, navigation trust, and accessible UI. The guide describes graceful fallback behavior if native dependencies are unavailable, but teams should test the resulting fallback on their supported targets rather than treating plugin availability as proof of successful content delivery.
