Codex CLI is another option with a ChatGPT Free account, though its usage allowance depends on your plan.
What “free AI credits” means in a terminal
Providers use different billing models, so a free route may not add a dollar balance to your account. Gemini CLI offers request quotas, Codex usage is included with ChatGPT plans, and Anthropic’s actual API-credit award is limited to qualifying researchers. These options can all support no-cost use, but their allowances are not directly comparable: a request, a plan allowance, and a dollar-denominated API credit do not represent the same amount of work.

Choose a free terminal route

Set up Gemini CLI at no cost with a Google account
For a general-purpose free starting route, use Gemini CLI’s Google-account sign-in for Gemini Code Assist Individual. Google’s announcement describes this as signing in with a personal Google account to obtain a free Gemini Code Assist license. The current quota page, rather than the launch announcement, is the better source for limits because quotas can change.

- Install and open Gemini CLI using the official Gemini CLI project instructions for your operating system.
- Choose the Google-account sign-in flow and authenticate with your personal Google account to use the Gemini Code Assist Individual route.
- Check the current quota documentation before relying on a particular number of requests. The listed maximum is 1,000 per user per day, but requests per minute are also limited and availability may vary during high demand.
If you instead configure Gemini CLI with an unpaid Gemini API key, you are using the separate API-key route: the documented cap is up to 250 requests per user per day, limited to Flash models. Don’t treat the two caps as a single pool or as a cash credit balance.

Use Codex CLI with a ChatGPT Free account
OpenAI says Codex is included with ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, and documents signing into Codex CLI with a ChatGPT account. Follow the Codex plan instructions to connect the CLI. Your available usage depends on your plan, and the help page does not establish a universal number of free tasks or tokens.
To see what is available to your account, check the usage dashboard or run /status in the CLI. That account-specific allowance is more useful than assuming a fixed quota from another user’s experience.

When Anthropic API credits may apply
Anthropic’s External Researcher Access Program is a narrow, application-based route for AI safety and alignment researchers whose topics fit the company’s high-priority areas. Successful applicants receive $1,000 in API credits. Those credits are for API use, not the Claude web app, so the program should not be read as general free access to Claude Code. Why the Google Cloud $300 offer may not cover Gemini API use
Google Cloud advertises a $300 welcome credit for eligible new customers, but that does not make it a reliable way to pay Gemini API or AI Studio charges. Google’s billing FAQ says credits cannot be used for those services for accounts opened after March 2, 2026. Eligible credits received before that restriction may remain usable until they expire. Check the current Gemini API billing FAQ for the controlling service-specific policy; the general Google Cloud free-tier page does not override it.

Check the allowance before building a workflow around it
- Confirm which sign-in route you selected; the Google-account and unpaid API-key paths have different Gemini CLI quotas and model restrictions.
- Review the provider’s official quota or account-usage page before depending on a cap, since limits, availability, and plan terms can change.
- Do not convert daily request counts into an estimated number of coding tasks. The cited providers do not establish an apples-to-apples task-capacity comparison.
- Find out what happens after the free allowance is exhausted. A request quota, plan-included usage, and prepaid API credits have different billing behavior.
