The ASUS Pro WS W890E-SAGE SE is a premium workstation motherboard for Intel Xeon 600 processors, built around extensive CPU-connected expansion, high-speed storage and networking, and onboard remote management. Its seven physical PCIe 5.0 x16 slots are not wired the same way with every processor, however, and the board’s large EEB footprint, registered-memory requirements, cooling and power needs make compatibility checks essential. This is an assessment of the specifications and of ServeTheHome’s published review—not a hands-on test by this publication.
What the W890E-SAGE SE is designed for
ASUS lists the Pro WS W890E-SAGE SE as an Intel W890 motherboard with an LGA4710-2 socket for Xeon 600 workstation processors. It is intended for builds that need workstation-class CPU and memory support, several expansion cards, extensive storage or remote system management—not as an upgrade for a consumer desktop CPU or standard unbuffered desktop memory. Check ASUS’s specifications and current CPU and memory support information against the exact parts you plan to use.

ASUS Japan announced the board on March 27, 2026, and said sales in Japan were scheduled to begin April 3, 2026. Those dates describe the Japanese launch, not availability in every market. ASUS Japan’s announcement also describes the board’s AST2600 BMC and Control Center Express management software.

Seven full-length physical slots make the board look like a natural choice for a multi-GPU or accelerator build, but the CPU determines which slots are electrically available. ASUS publishes different slot arrangements for different Xeon 600 series:

| Processor series | Published PCIe 5.0 slot arrangement |
|---|---|
| Xeon 690, 670 or 650 | x16 / x16 / x16 / x16 / x16 / x8 / x16 |
| Xeon 630 | x16 / x0 / x16 / x0 / x16 / x0 / x16 |
In the Xeon 630 arrangement, x0 means the corresponding slot is not enabled in the published configuration. ASUS says specifications vary by CPU and points buyers to its bifurcation reference; verify the exact processor, card placement and lane-sharing rules before assuming that a particular set of slots can be used together. CXL support is listed for slots 1, 3, 5 and 7. ServeTheHome’s review describes that support as CXL 2.0 and notes that devices connected through the chipset share a DMI Gen4 x8 link to the CPU. That shared connection is relevant when several chipset-connected devices are busy at once. See the ASUS specifications and ServeTheHome’s review.
As a result, the useful question is not simply “How many GPUs can it run?” It is whether the selected CPU exposes the required slots and lanes, and whether the cards physically fit with adequate space for cooling and cabling. A slot count alone cannot establish a workable GPU configuration.

Memory requirements and channel limits
The board has eight DDR5 slots and supports ECC registered DIMMs (RDIMMs), 3DS-RDIMMs and multiplexed combined rank DIMMs (MRDIMMs), according to ASUS. It is not a board for ordinary unbuffered desktop DDR5. ASUS describes an eight-channel memory architecture, but says only channels A, C, E and G function with Xeon 630 Series processors. Memory type, supported speed and DIMM population depend on the processor and configuration; use the current ASUS CPU and Memory Support information to check exact modules and configurations rather than treating a headline speed as universal.

Storage options include four M.2 Key M sockets supporting PCIe 5.0 x4, two SlimSAS connections, one MCIO connector and four SATA 6 Gb/s ports. For supported processor series, the MCIO connector supports PCIe 5.0 x8 operating as x4/x4; chipset SlimSAS connections support PCIe 4.0 x4. ASUS also lists Intel VROC/VMD support, with a VROC hardware key purchased separately for supported RAID features. Drive count, RAID capability and topology depend on the specific CPU and configuration, so consult the board’s manual and support information before planning a storage array.

For networking, the board provides dual Intel 10Gb Ethernet and a separate Realtek 1Gb port reserved for BMC/IPMI. ASUS says the BMC port does not support internet access. The rear panel also has two USB4 40Gbps Type-C ports and six 10Gbps Type-A ports. ASUS describes USB-C display output up to 8K at 60 Hz, but that function requires DisplayPort input through a Mini DisplayPort-in to DisplayPort adapter and depends on the processor or graphics card. Separately, the AST2600 BMC provides a VGA output. These are different display paths, with different prerequisites.
Remote management: useful, but workflow-dependent
The onboard AST2600 BMC and dedicated management LAN give the board a remote monitoring and management option suited to a workstation that is deployed or maintained away from its operator. ASUS Japan identifies Control Center Express as the accompanying management software. The announcement establishes the presence of these capabilities, but the exact features and any licensing requirements depend on the intended workflow; confirm them with ASUS before making them part of an operations plan. Case fit, cooling and power are build constraints
ServeTheHome identifies the board as a 12-by-13-inch EEB motherboard. Check the chassis’s supported dimensions and mounting points—not just an “E-ATX” label—and leave room for card thickness, cable routing and airflow. The review describes multiple VRM and memory cooling fans and an included AngleBoost fan assembly; ASUS also highlights its power-stage design and added cooling hardware. These details point to a board that needs a deliberate airflow plan rather than a cramped, minimally ventilated case. ServeTheHome’s review and ASUS Japan’s announcement
CPU installation and cooler compatibility also need checking. In its tested context, ServeTheHome used a Noctua NH-U14S DX4677 with a Xeon 658X and reports that the package includes E2A and E2B CPU carriers: E2A for Xeon 696X/698X and E2B for other Xeon CPUs. Treat that as the review’s reported configuration, not proof that the cooler or carrier arrangement applies to every processor and case. Follow the current ASUS manual and the CPU and cooler makers’ instructions for the exact build.

Power planning depends on the chosen CPU and installed cards. ServeTheHome notes multiple CPU and PCIe power sockets and says they need to be connected for adequate system power. Check the board manual, PSU capacity and required cabling against the complete component list; high-draw cards and overclocking make that review’s warning especially relevant. The available information does not establish a universal PSU wattage for all configurations.
What the independent review establishes
Ryan Smith’s ServeTheHome review, published September 11, 2026, examines the board’s physical design, slot layout, power delivery, cooling, I/O and block diagram. The review reports using an Intel Xeon 658X and Noctua NH-U14S DX4677. Its observations and test setup belong to ServeTheHome; this article does not claim independent bench testing or performance results. Read the full ServeTheHome review alongside ASUS’s specifications when evaluating a particular workload.
The board’s feature count does not by itself establish that it is the best platform for a given workstation. A useful comparison should account for the required CPU lane allocation, card spacing, memory configuration, storage topology, remote-management needs, case compatibility, power and cooling—and the cost of the complete Xeon and registered-memory platform.
