The label describes a category of laptop hardware, not one standard part. An “MDC” card is not automatically compatible with another laptop, or even with another MDC slot.
Where the MDC came from
Intel announced the Mobile Daughter Card on September 8, 1998, together with the desktop Audio/Modem Riser (AMR). The announcement described moving analog input/output functions off the main board. Desktops would use a riser card, and mobile systems would use a daughter card. A technical textbook chapter describes the same split: the analog portion sits on the MDC, and the digital functions stay on the system board.

Intel’s announcement also said: “The new AMR and MDC specifications will also ease the certification process.” Modem circuitry needed regulatory approval, and separating it from the motherboard let a manufacturer certify one small module instead of the whole board.

- 【AX210 NGW Wireless LAN Card】Provides tri-band (6GHz, 5GHz and 2.4GHz) signal. Maximum speed up to 5374Mbps(2400Mbps @6GHz + 2400Mbps @5GHz + 574Mbps @2.4GHz).
- 【Bluetooth 5.3】Based on Bluetooth 5.2, Bluetooth 5.3 adds LE enhanced connection/Host set Controller key length function/LE channel hierarchy function. Make Bluetooth 5.3 lower latency, stronger anti-interference, improve battery life.
- 【Installation Requirements】For motherboards with Intel CPU and M.2 network slot, NGFF M2 2230 A/E key.Not supported CNVIo2 protocol M.2 slot and mini PCIe slot laptops.
- 【Compatible System】Support Windows 11/10 64-bit, WiFi and Bluetooth drivers need to be installed on the running PC (search "AX210NGW" from Intel website to download and install wifi and Bluetooth drivers).
What the interface looks like
A secondary summary of the Intel MDC 1.0 specification describes a 30-pin AMP connector carrying power, audio lines and AC-Link serial data, and it lists several board dimensions. We could not check the original Intel document directly. Treat these details as belonging to MDC 1.0 only. They do not describe every product sold as an MDC.
Real-world examples
MiTAC 8050QMA
This laptop’s service manual lists an AC’97 modem connection through MDC and names an Askey V1456VQL-P1(INT) module. It shows that the MDC was a physical, serviceable part in real laptops.
Azalia-era implementations
Another product manual refers to an Azalia mobile daughter-card specification for audio/modem codec solutions. It also describes a module that combines modem and Bluetooth functions. So the same name covers more than a plain modem card.

Will an MDC card fit or work in my laptop?
A card that physically fits may still be electrically or functionally incompatible. The sources establish that variants exist. They do not certify that any two cards are interchangeable. Before you buy a replacement, check these in order:
- The exact laptop model and its service manual part number for the card.
- The connector and interface specification.
- The supported function: modem, audio, Bluetooth or a combination.
- The board dimensions.
- The drivers and any sideband connections the card needs.
A useful search phrase is “MDC modem daughter card” plus your laptop model. Stock for this old hardware varies and was not checked, so confirm the part number first. Don’t buy on the “MDC” label alone.
Is it relevant today?
MDC is a historical hardware category. Dial-up modems are no longer standard in laptops, and the sources give no adoption or market figures. The term matters mostly if you are repairing or documenting a late-1990s to 2000s laptop. When you write about one, spell out “mobile daughter card” on first use and name the specific laptop or interface. MDC has other meanings in other fields.
