Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test the journeys that matter most, on the devices and conditions your users actually encounter. A reliable mobile testing process combines repeatable automated checks, deliberate device and OS coverage, manual exploration, accessibility testing, and feedback from real users. No single test run—or automated crawler—can prove an app is free of defects.
How do I test a mobile app before launch?
Start by identifying the failures that would most harm users or the business, then build tests around those risks. A successful launch screen is not enough: account recovery, interrupted network requests, permissions, purchases, and upgrades from older versions can all fail even when the app opens normally.
- Map critical journeys. List the key tasks users must complete, such as first launch, sign-in or account creation, the app’s primary task, and a purchase or other high-value action if applicable. Include recovery from errors and updating from a previous app version.
- Record the conditions each journey depends on. Note account state, permissions, network access, app state, and any external service involved. Identify what the user should see when a dependency fails, not just when it works.
- Automate stable, high-value checks. Use repeatable unit and UI tests for behavior that should remain consistent across changes. Run them after relevant changes so regressions are caught early.
- Explore manually. Try unclear paths, unusual inputs, interruptions, and states that scripts do not model well. A person can notice confusing feedback or a broken interaction even when an automated check reports success.
- Test accessibility throughout. Use assistive technology, analysis tools, automated UI checks, and user feedback rather than postponing accessibility until the end.
- Retest fixes under the conditions that exposed the issue. Rerun the affected journey and relevant regression checks, and record which devices, OS versions, app states, and network conditions were actually exercised.
This is a risk-based workflow, not a universal checklist: the right journeys depend on what the app does and who relies on it.
What should I test in a mobile app?
For each important journey, check both the expected result and the failure path. A useful test plan describes the starting state, action, expected outcome, and conditions—not simply “test login.”

| Area | What to exercise | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Core user journeys | First launch, account creation or sign-in, the main task, and any high-value action such as a purchase. | These are the paths most likely to block users if broken. |
| Recovery and state | Invalid or expired credentials, denied permissions, unavailable services, app restarts, and returning to a task after interruption. | Users need understandable outcomes when the ideal path is unavailable. |
| Network behavior | Slow or unavailable connections, requests that fail, and restoring service where relevant. | Connectivity can change while a user is in the middle of a task. |
| Compatibility | Relevant OS versions, device sizes, manufacturers, locales, and hardware-dependent behavior. | A pass on one configuration says little about configurations that were not exercised. |
| Accessibility | Screen-reader interaction, accessible labels and controls, layout and focus behavior, automated checks, and feedback from users with disabilities. | Accessibility issues can make otherwise functional journeys unusable. |
| Updates | Upgrade from a prior app version and preserve or migrate user data as intended. | Existing users can encounter different states than a fresh installation. |
Adapt the cases to the app. For example, a location-dependent feature needs location permissions and relevant location conditions; an app without purchases does not need purchase-flow tests.
How do I test an app on different devices?
Choose coverage from your actual audience and technical risks. Consider the OS versions and device sizes your users run, plus locales, account states, network conditions, and hardware behavior that could affect important journeys. A test result describes only the conditions it exercised.

On Android, Google says devices in the Play Console pre-launch report are selected for breadth and can vary. The mix takes account of popularity, crash frequency, screen resolution, manufacturer, and OS version. Treat it as a useful baseline sample, not proof that every important device or configuration is covered. Add focused tests for gaps that matter to your users. Google Play Console: Use a pre-launch report to identify issues.
Cloud testing can broaden device coverage, but it does not replace physical-device checks when hardware behavior is central to the product. Compare approaches by the OS and device coverage they provide, the control you have over journeys and test data, the artifacts available for diagnosis, accessibility coverage, repeatability, and turnaround.

What does Google Play’s pre-launch report test?
After you upload an app bundle or save a production release, Play Console installs the app on a set of test devices and runs a crawler for several minutes. It performs basic actions such as typing, tapping, and swiping. The report can flag stability, compatibility, performance, and accessibility issues. Reports are generated automatically subject to test-lab capacity. Google’s setup and report guidance.
Help the crawler reach meaningful screens
- If sign-in is required, provide a dedicated test account; Google recommends not supplying official credentials.
- Add a Robo script for a known user path, or a game loop for an OpenGL app or game.
- Add deep links for additional entry points; the help page allows up to three.
- Select language preferences when language-specific content or layout matters.
- Review device-level screenshots, videos, stack traces, and performance details where available.
Understand what the report can miss
Some apps need changes to be crawlable; country or install validation can interfere. Test devices are located in the United States, so location-restricted content may differ from what users elsewhere see. The crawler cannot make purchases, meaning subscription and in-app product flows may be only partly exercised. Google explicitly cautions that the report cannot guarantee identification of all issues. Treat findings as useful signals to investigate, not certification or exhaustive coverage. When should I use Firebase Test Lab Robo tests?
Use targeted Robo testing when the broad pre-launch report leaves a meaningful Android coverage gap. Firebase documents controls for targeting particular devices, locales, and Android versions, and running tests for longer durations. Robo test powers Google Play’s pre-launch report; the Firebase option gives more explicit targeting and duration control. It remains a complement to testing on physical devices when real hardware matters. Firebase: Beyond Pre-Launch Reports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I test mobile app accessibility?
Use several methods because they reveal different problems. Android’s accessibility guidance recommends manual interaction with accessibility services such as TalkBack, analysis tools, automated UI testing, and user testing with people who use the app, including people with disabilities. Compose testing APIs can locate elements, check attributes, and perform actions through the semantics tree that accessibility services read. Automated checks identify potential issues; they do not replace assistive-technology use or observation of users. Android Developers: Test your app’s accessibility.

For iOS, Apple’s documentation describes testing with accessibility settings and assistive technologies and adding accessibility audits in UI tests. Exact current Xcode steps are not established here, so consult Apple’s documentation for the applicable version and workflow: Performing accessibility testing for your app.
How should I triage test findings?
- Rank by user impact. Prioritize issues that block a critical journey or put users at risk.
- Check how broadly the issue reproduces. Record the device, OS, locale, account and app state, and network conditions associated with the failure.
- Use the evidence available. Play Console findings may include severity, device details, screenshots or videos, and stack traces.
- Fix and rerun. Retest the failing journey and relevant regression checks; state exactly what the new run covered.
A test suite is valuable when it gives the team reproducible evidence and catches meaningful regressions. It cannot establish that untested devices, states, or journeys are defect-free.

Does a successful Play pre-launch report mean an Android app is ready to launch?
No. It is one automated signal from the devices and paths exercised, not a guarantee that every issue has been identified.
Can a website screenshot API test a native mobile app?
No. It can capture web pages used alongside an app, but native iOS and Android behavior requires app testing on relevant devices or test environments.
