It makes testing harder because an app that works on one phone or simulator may crash, behave unexpectedly or fail to provide a normal feature on another. The practical response is not to test every device; it is to select representative configurations based on your users and the ways your app could fail.
What device fragmentation means
Fragmentation is variation across the devices and software environments where an app runs. On Android, manufacturers build devices and customized systems based on the Android Open Source Project, so differences can extend beyond model names and OS versions to OEM-specific behavior. Screen size, orientation and locale can also affect how a particular configuration behaves.
These dimensions combine: a bug may occur only on one device model running one OS version in a particular orientation or locale. Firebase Test Lab describes a device configuration using model, OS version, screen orientation and locale, a useful set of details to record when reproducing a failure.
How fragmentation affects app testing
One implementation can behave differently across devices
A device-specific compatibility issue may break standard functionality, cause a crash or produce unexpected behavior. Other issues involve OEM features that go beyond baseline Android behavior. A 2024 study, Demystifying Device-specific Compatibility Issues in Android Apps, examined 197 such issues collected from 94 open-source repositories and grouped them broadly into functionality breaks and OEM-feature issues. Those figures describe the study sample; they are not an estimate of the frequency of problems across Android apps.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Testing every supported device is not practical
The variety of Android devices and OS versions makes exhaustive testing infeasible for most teams. A 2023 paper, Taming Android Fragmentation through Lightweight Crowdsourced Testing, explores crowdsourced real-device testing for finding some API-induced compatibility problems. It also notes that customized OS versions and semantic changes can be difficult to detect with static analysis alone. No single handset, emulator or test service can establish compatibility with every configuration.
Failures need configuration-level triage
When a test fails, record the model, OS version, orientation and locale, along with the app build and steps to reproduce it. If the problem appears limited to an OEM or device family, include that detail in the ticket. This gives developers a concrete environment to investigate instead of an unhelpful report that the app “fails on Android.”
How to choose devices and configurations to test
Build a representative set around your actual audience and product risks, rather than using a universal device ranking. If available, use product analytics and support reports to identify the configurations your users rely on and the devices associated with reported failures. Consider these dimensions:
Rank #2
- YOUR CONTENT, SUPER SMOOTH: The ultra-clear 6.7" FHD+ Super AMOLED display of Galaxy A17 5G helps bring your content to life, whether you're scrolling through recipes or video chatting with loved ones.¹
- LIVE FAST. CHARGE FASTER: Focus more on the moment and less on your battery percentage with Galaxy A17 5G. Super Fast Charging powers up your battery so you can get back to life sooner.²
- MEMORIES MADE PICTURE PERFECT: Capture every angle in stunning clarity, from wide family photos to close-ups of friends, with the triple-lens camera on Galaxy A17 5G.
- NEED MORE STORAGE? WE HAVE YOU COVERED: With an improved 2TB of expandable storage, Galaxy A17 5G makes it easy to keep cherished photos, videos and important files readily accessible whenever you need them.³
- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
- OS versions: include the versions your app supports and versions implicated by compatibility reports.
- Models and manufacturers: include relevant device families, especially where OEM-specific behavior could affect a feature.
- Screen and orientation: cover layouts and workflows that may change across screen sizes or portrait and landscape modes.
- Locale: include locales important to your audience, especially when text, formats or locale-dependent behavior matter.
- High-risk journeys: prioritize core flows and features that depend heavily on system or device behavior.
This is a practical risk-based approach, not a validated formula for ranking all devices. No current ecosystem-wide device or OS market-share figure is established here; use current authoritative market data or your own analytics before making claims about device share.

1. Catch logic errors quickly with focused tests
Start with isolated tests for app logic. Android distinguishes local JVM tests from instrumented tests that run against Android framework behavior. Apple’s Xcode testing guidance likewise describes a layered approach; tightly focused tests are generally quicker to run than UI tests. A fast local suite is useful for frequent feedback, but it does not replace checking behavior across device configurations.
2. Exercise important integration and UI journeys
Use integration and UI tests for critical user flows and behavior that depends on the platform. Keep the frequently run suite focused, since broader UI coverage takes longer. First reproduce failures locally where practical, then expand the matrix to investigate device-dependent behavior.

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
3. Run a selected device matrix
Android Studio can run instrumented tests on selected connected devices or emulators and show the results in a Test Matrix. For broader hosted testing, Firebase Test Lab supports Android configurations across model, OS version, orientation and locale. Its Android Studio integration lets teams choose configurations; tests run on hosted physical and virtual devices and return logs and failure details.
For iOS, Firebase Test Lab supports XCTest, including XCUITest, as well as Robo and game-loop tests on hosted iOS devices. Its guide recommends running locally on a simulator before testing on hosted physical devices. Apple’s Xcode documentation describes managing simulated and physical devices with Device Hub.
4. Use virtual and physical devices for different purposes
Emulators and simulators make it practical to run repeatable checks during development. Hosted physical devices can expose behavior that emulator-only testing misses, while virtual devices can broaden test coverage efficiently. Select the mix according to the risks and configurations you need to cover; neither approach guarantees universal compatibility.

Choosing a testing setup
Compare approaches against the needs of your team rather than assuming one tool fits every project.
| Decision axis | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Physical versus virtual | Whether your risks require real-device behavior, virtual coverage, or both. |
| Configuration range | Which models, OS versions, orientations and locales you need to exercise. |
| Execution and parallelism | How long the suite takes and whether it can run across configurations in parallel. |
| Workflow integration | How the setup fits local development and CI, and how readily developers can inspect failures. |
| Cost, quotas and storage | What the chosen service allows, what it charges, and how test artifacts and logs are retained. |
Official documentation describes available workflows, not an independent product comparison. Check the current documentation for the tool you choose, because device catalogs, workflows, quotas and pricing can change.

Screenshot testing can reveal visual differences across models, OS versions, screen sizes and orientations, but it is only one part of compatibility testing. A screenshot cannot by itself establish that interactions, system integrations or device-specific behavior work correctly. Treat visual captures as evidence for layout and rendering checks, and use functional tests for behavior.

For website screenshots rather than native mobile app compatibility tests, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server. Its screenshots may help document how a website renders at configured viewports, but they are not a substitute for running a mobile app on device configurations.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
