Test a website in Microsoft Edge by first reproducing the issue in Edge DevTools, then checking the relevant viewport, network, and browser behavior. Choose the right Edge testing method

Open Edge DevTools and inspect the page
Open the page in Edge at the viewport and account state relevant to the problem. Open DevTools using any of these methods:

- Press F12.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
In Elements, inspect the DOM and try temporary CSS changes to test a layout hypothesis. Use Console to review JavaScript errors and investigate behavior. DevTools can also inspect the files and resources used to construct the page. Live edits are diagnostic: they do not change your deployed site.

Reproduce viewport and network conditions
Use Device Emulation to check how a responsive layout behaves at a mobile-sized viewport and under simulated network conditions. Inspect network requests to find failed resources or requests that appear slow in the conditions you are investigating.
Emulation is a useful first check, not proof that a site works on every phone or operating system. If a defect could depend on a real device, input method, OS, or browser version, reproduce it on that actual target before treating it as fixed.
Diagnose quality and behavior issues
Edge DevTools includes tools for investigating accessibility, performance, compatibility, and security concerns. Use the diagnostic that fits the symptom rather than treating a single tool result as a complete audit.

- Unexpected resource or page failure: inspect network requests and their outcomes.
- Memory or rendering concern: use the relevant DevTools diagnostics to investigate the page behavior.
- Accessibility, performance, compatibility, or security finding: investigate the finding in context; a passing check is not comprehensive certification.
Run automated tests in Microsoft Edge with Playwright
Playwright supports Microsoft Edge because Edge is based on Chromium. In Playwright Test, select Edge with the msedge channel. Microsoft’s guide also lists msedge-beta, msedge-dev, and msedge-canary; choose the channel that matches the release or stability question you want to test. Playwright details can change, so consult the current Microsoft Playwright guide when setting up a project.

npx playwright test --headedUse assertions that represent user-visible outcomes, such as a confirmation message after submitting a form, rather than only checking that a button can be clicked. A headed run is useful for inspection; headless runs are suited to command-line and CI execution.

WebDriver is an alternative when your project already uses its framework ecosystem or needs the interaction and session capabilities Microsoft describes. A WebDriver setup comprises Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Edge WebDriver, and a WebDriver testing framework. For Chromium-based Edge, use Selenium 4; Selenium 3 is no longer supported. Match the first three version components of the driver to the installed Edge version. Since browser and driver versions change, check Microsoft’s Edge WebDriver documentation for current setup guidance.

Microsoft describes WebDriver as simulating user interactions; it can also access browser information unavailable to in-browser JavaScript, manage windows, tabs, and pages, and run multiple sessions on one machine. These capabilities make it distinct from a quick in-page DevTools investigation. DevTools Protocol, Playwright, Puppeteer, and WebDriver are related browser-automation approaches, but they are not interchangeable in setup or workflow. Microsoft notes that Edge DevTools Protocol matches Chrome DevTools Protocol APIs; Playwright provides a single API across browser engines.

A local Edge run confirms behavior in that local browser and environment. If your users depend on different operating systems, browser versions, or real devices, assess whether hosted testing fills a real coverage gap. BrowserStack describes manual cross-browser testing and browser automation on real browsers. Before choosing any hosted service, check the browser and OS coverage you need, whether it can reach your local or staging site, automation and debugging/reporting integration, privacy requirements, and budget. A hosted service is not necessary for every website; confirm current service terms and environment support directly.
Troubleshoot common setup and test failures
