DAST and penetration testing are not competing names for the same activity. DAST is a runtime testing method that observes a running mobile app and its API traffic. A penetration test is a scoped, risk-driven assessment that can use DAST alongside manual analysis, exploitation and evidence-based reporting. For a mobile product, test the client and the backend API as distinct but connected scopes; testing one does not prove that the other is secure.
DAST and penetration testing: the practical difference
Dynamic application security testing (DAST) examines an application while it is running. In a mobile context, that may involve launching the app on a device, observing its behavior, intercepting requests and responses, and checking how the exposed API handles inputs, authentication and errors. DAST can be automated, manual, or a combination of both.

Penetration testing is an engagement and a methodical process rather than a single scanner. The testers agree on authorization and scope, gather intelligence, map the application and attack surface, execute test cases, exploit suspected weaknesses to establish whether they are real, and report reproducible evidence, impact and remediation guidance. A penetration test can therefore include DAST, but a DAST scan is not automatically a penetration test.

Calling a scanner-only exercise a full penetration test can give stakeholders a false sense of coverage. The description is justified only when the scope and methods include the assessment work actually performed.

What mobile API testing must include
A mobile application usually has two security surfaces: the client running on a phone or emulator and the remote services that process its data. They interact, but they are not interchangeable testing targets.
Mobile-client scope
Client testing examines runtime behavior and the way the app uses the operating system and network. Areas to review include:
- Data stored locally and data held in memory while the app is running
- Cryptographic use and protection of keys or secrets
- Authentication handling, session state and logout behavior
- Network traffic, certificate validation and sensitive data exposure
- Platform interactions such as exported components, permissions, deep links and inter-process communication
- Code protection, tamper resistance and other resilience controls where they are relevant to the threat model
- Privacy behavior and handling of personal or sensitive information
The OWASP Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS) groups mobile controls into storage, cryptography, authentication, network, platform, code, resilience and privacy. The Mobile Application Security Testing Guide (MASTG) provides technical procedures and test cases for verifying those controls on mobile operating systems.

The API requires its own inventory and tests. Start with hosts, versions, endpoints and authentication flows, including endpoints that are not visible in the normal user interface. Test the behavior of:
- Object-level authorization: whether a user can access or modify a specific record
- Authentication and session controls
- Property-level authorization: which fields a user may read or change
- Function-level authorization: which operations a role may invoke
- Resource consumption and rate or volume limits
- Sensitive business workflows and abuse cases
- Server-side request forgery protections
- Security configuration and error handling
- Endpoint inventory, versioning and undocumented services
- Responses received from, or sent to, third-party APIs
These categories correspond to the OWASP API Security Top 10 (2023). That list is an awareness document, not a measured prevalence survey: its release notes state that no public data was contributed for that edition and that the categories draw on project-team experience, specialist review and community feedback.
How DAST works against a mobile-backed API
A runtime test begins with a functioning build and a controlled environment. The tester exercises the app, records the network calls it makes and sends test inputs to the reachable services. Depending on the setup, the work may be performed through a proxy, an API testing client, an automated scanner or manually through the app itself.

What DAST can reveal
- Previously unknown entry points discovered during normal app use
- Request and response formats, parameters, headers and error behavior
- Transport problems such as sensitive data sent without adequate protection
- Authentication failures, weak session handling and exposed tokens
- Some authorization errors that are visible through controlled request changes
- Server configuration weaknesses and common input-validation problems
- Regressions when the same checks run against successive builds or API versions
Automation is particularly useful for broad, repeatable checks. It can run on a schedule or as part of a release workflow when the build, accounts and endpoint set are stable enough to support it.

Where DAST needs human judgment
A scanner sees responses and patterns, not the product’s intended business rules. It may not know that one account should be able to control one vehicle but not another, that a workflow must occur only once, or that a role transition has a security consequence. It also cannot reliably infer every design assumption from runtime behavior.
Browser-oriented scanners can produce findings that do not apply to a mobile client’s actual threat model. Every alert therefore needs contextual review: confirm that the endpoint is reachable by the app, reproduce the behavior with the correct account and role, determine realistic impact, and distinguish a true issue from a harmless or irrelevant response.
What a penetration test adds
A penetration test puts runtime observations into a risk-driven investigation. The tester does not merely collect alerts; they ask how an attacker could combine behaviors to reach a protected asset or business action.
1. Preparation and scope agreement
Before active testing, document written authorization, targets, permitted techniques, test windows, accounts, data handling, emergency contacts and cleanup requirements. Define whether the engagement includes the mobile binaries, the API, supporting web services, third-party integrations, administration interfaces, or all of them. A build supplied for testing may differ from production, so record the variant and configuration.
2. Intelligence gathering
Collect the app package or an appropriate test build, API documentation or an endpoint inventory, account credentials for every required role, hostnames and versions, and any constraints such as certificate pinning, root detection or enterprise network controls. Identify which services are owned by the organization and which are operated by another party.

3. Application and attack-surface mapping
Map screens, deep links, background jobs, local storage, authentication flows, API resources, object identifiers, role differences and sensitive workflows. Note which operations are available before login, after login, during account recovery and after a session expires. Mapping prevents the test from becoming a list of disconnected requests.
4. Test execution and exploitation
Use automated DAST where it provides efficient coverage, then perform manual test cases that reflect the product’s threat model. Exploitation should be controlled and proportional: the goal is to prove a weakness and its impact, not to damage data or availability. Testers should verify suspected findings with the least intrusive action that demonstrates the issue.
5. Reporting and remediation support
Each finding should identify the affected build or endpoint, prerequisites, exact reproduction steps, evidence, security impact, affected roles or objects, and a practical remediation direction. Explain how the issue was validated and what was not tested. A failure list from an automated tool alone does not demonstrate that all relevant controls were assessed.

Object-level authorization deserves special attention
Object-level authorization failures occur when an endpoint accepts an object identifier but does not verify that the authenticated user is allowed to perform the requested action on that specific object. Changing an ID in a request is a useful test case, but authorization is not solved merely by checking whether the ID equals the user’s own ID. Real systems often have ownership, delegation, tenancy, role and state rules.
For every endpoint that receives an object ID and acts on that object, create test cases for:
- The legitimate owner accessing and modifying the object
- Another ordinary user attempting the same action
- A user in a different tenant or organization
- A privileged and a restricted role
- Objects in different lifecycle states, such as archived or pending
- Requests that alter identifiers in paths, query strings, bodies and nested objects
OWASP describes a mobile vehicle-control example in which the service failed to confirm that a submitted vehicle identifier belonged to the authenticated user. A successful response in such a case is evidence of an authorization defect even if authentication itself is strong.

Standards to use together
No single guide covers the entire mobile-plus-API system.
| Reference | Use it for | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| OWASP MASVS | Baseline mobile-app security controls across storage, cryptography, authentication, network, platform, code, resilience and privacy | It is a baseline, not a guarantee of absolute security |
| OWASP MASTG | Technical mobile testing procedures and operating-system-specific test cases | Endpoint testing is outside its coverage |
| OWASP API Security Top 10 (2023) | Awareness categories for API risks and planning API test cases | It is not a prevalence measurement and does not replace testing |
| OWASP Web Security Testing Guide | Complementary technical guidance for remote web services and endpoints | Use alongside, not instead of, mobile-specific testing |
OWASP’s mobile guidance recommends consulting both mobile and API resources for an app backed by an API because neither replaces the other. MASVS also assumes appropriate architecture, threat modeling and standards for other parts of the ecosystem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing DAST, penetration testing or both
Use the following decision questions when defining a program or buying an assessment.
Coverage
Does the proposed work include the mobile client, the server-side APIs, or only a list of externally exposed endpoints? Require the scope to name builds, environments, API versions and integrations.
Business logic
Will the testers examine authorization rules, role differences, abuse cases and sensitive workflows specific to the product? If not, a scanner may leave the highest-impact defects undiscovered.
Repeatability
Can checks run on every build or release, and can results be compared over time? Automated DAST is valuable for recurring regression coverage when test accounts and environments are maintained.
Best Value
Validation and evidence
Ask whether suspected issues will be reproduced, impact explained and remediation guidance supplied. A report should make it possible for an engineering team to verify the defect without guessing what the tester did.
Access and environment
Confirm that the team will receive a suitable build, test accounts and roles, API documentation or an inventory, and a safe environment. Certificate pinning, root detection, enterprise network restrictions and build differences can materially change what is observable.
Speed and effort
Automation can run quickly and repeatedly. A human-led assessment requires more setup and specialist time, but it can investigate context and logic. There is no universal cost or coverage ratio: the answer depends on scope, access, environment and the depth of manual analysis.
In practice, use DAST as a recurring layer where it fits the build and endpoint workflow. Commission a scoped penetration test when risk requires contextual review, exploitation validation, broader client-and-server coverage or independent evidence. Treat them as complementary controls in one testing program.
A practical mobile API test plan
- Define the boundary. List the mobile platforms and builds, API hosts and versions, supporting services, third-party dependencies, account roles and excluded systems.
- Obtain authorization. Record approval, allowed techniques, test windows, data rules, contacts, rollback expectations and cleanup steps.
- Prepare accounts and data. Create representative users, tenants, roles and objects. Use synthetic or approved test data and document how it will be removed.
- Map the client. Exercise onboarding, login, recovery, logout, deep links, offline behavior, background activity and sensitive screens. Record local storage, platform interactions and network calls.
- Inventory the API. Enumerate hosts, versions, methods, parameters, object identifiers, authentication schemes and undocumented endpoints observed during use.
- Run repeatable DAST checks. Test transport, authentication, common input handling, error responses, configuration and known endpoint patterns. Preserve the build and tool configuration used.
- Execute contextual cases. Test object, property and function authorization; role changes; tenant separation; sensitive workflows; resource consumption; SSRF; endpoint version drift; and third-party response handling.
- Validate safely. Reproduce each suspected issue with the least intrusive proof, capture request and response evidence, and stop if availability or data integrity could be affected.
- Report and retest. Deliver findings with impact and remediation guidance, then rerun the exact proof after fixes and record what changed.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming mobile testing includes the API. Put client and endpoint coverage in separate scope lines and deliverables.
- Treating a scanner report as a verdict. Review exploit scenarios and application context; OWASP’s Mobile Application Security Testing Guide cautions, “In any case, consider exploit scenarios when you perform the risk assessment; don’t blindly trust your scanning tool’s output.”
- Testing only the happy path. Include expired sessions, alternate roles, other tenants, malformed identifiers, replayed requests and state transitions.
- Checking only user-ID equality. Authorization must account for ownership, delegation, tenancy, role and action, not one identifier comparison.
- Ignoring build and environment differences. Record debug settings, feature flags, certificate pinning, root detection and network restrictions before interpreting results.
- Using an incomplete endpoint list. Derive inventory from documentation, observed traffic, versions, background jobs and administrative functions, then reconcile differences.
- Overclaiming standards compliance. MASVS improves control coverage but cannot guarantee absolute security. OWASP’s guidance states that it “cannot guarantee absolute security.”
- Leaving evidence unusable. Keep timestamps, account and role, endpoint, payload, response, screenshots or logs where appropriate, and the exact conditions needed to reproduce the result.
What a credible final report contains
A useful report starts with an executive scope statement: products, builds, environments, dates, roles, exclusions and testing methods. It then describes the attack surface and provides a prioritized finding register.
For each finding, include:
- A concise title and affected component
- Prerequisites, account role and object state
- Step-by-step reproduction with sanitized requests and responses
- Why the behavior violates the intended security rule
- Impact on confidentiality, integrity, availability, privacy or business operations
- Severity rationale tied to the reachable attack path
- Remediation direction and any compensating control
- Evidence that demonstrates the issue without exposing unnecessary sensitive data
- Retest status and residual limitations
Also state what was not tested. A transparent boundary is more useful than an apparently complete report whose coverage cannot be verified.
Bottom line for a mobile API program
DAST is the right recurring runtime layer for discovering and checking observable weaknesses in a running app and its services. Penetration testing is the right assessment when you need scope control, manual reasoning, exploit validation and evidence about business impact. Neither automatically replaces the other.
