Read and preserve any error from sudo apt update before retrying. A package-not-found message usually indicates stale indexes or repository configuration; an unmet-dependencies message needs a different repair path.
What the restricted-extras package actually does
Ubuntu distributes the usual collection of restricted media support and fonts through a metapackage rather than one standalone codec file. For the standard Ubuntu edition, the package is ubuntu-restricted-extras. In Ubuntu’s Noble package index it is published in the Multiverse component. The metapackage depends on ubuntu-restricted-addons and recommends libavcodec-extra; it coordinates installation of those packages and related dependencies.

Because it is a metapackage, installing it does not mean that every application will automatically play every format. Applications can have their own format support, sandbox restrictions, or licensing limitations. The first goal is to get APT’s package state and repositories healthy; application-specific playback problems should be investigated only after that.

Check the Ubuntu release and desktop flavor first
Restricted-extras package names differ between Ubuntu flavors. Before running an install command, check the release shown in Settings → About (or the equivalent About page in your desktop environment) and identify whether the session is Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu. Repository instructions and package availability can vary by release, so do not copy a command intended for a different edition.

Use the package that matches the installed flavor, not merely the flavor you intended to install. If you have changed desktops or upgraded from another flavor, the package already installed on the system may not match the current session.
Use this repair sequence in order
1. Refresh APT and inspect the complete result
Open a terminal and run:
sudo apt updateThis downloads current package-list indexes. Wait for it to finish and read every warning and error. APT can leave old indexes in place when a repository fails, so an install attempted immediately afterward may still report that a package cannot be located. Do not continue until you know whether the update completed successfully.
2. Confirm the repository component
The standard Ubuntu restricted-extras package is in Multiverse. In the graphical settings, open Software & Updates → Ubuntu Software and verify that the component providing Multiverse is selected, then close the window and allow it to reload package information. Labels can differ slightly between releases.
If you manage repositories by configuration files, verify that the entries correspond to your release and include the intended component. Do not replace a release name with another version’s name just to make a package appear. A repository definition for the wrong release can create conflicts that are harder to repair than the original missing package.

3. Install the flavor-matched package
For a standard Ubuntu desktop, run:
sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extrasFor another flavor, substitute the corresponding package from the table. Review the transaction summary before accepting it. A normal installation may pull in the package’s dependencies and recommended media support; it should not require a random download from an external website.
4. If the install is interrupted, finish the package operation
If a power loss, closed terminal, or another package operation interrupted installation, run the same install command again after checking that sudo apt update is clean. Preserve the terminal output if the second attempt fails; the exact package named in the error determines the next step.
Fix a “package cannot be located” message
When APT says it cannot locate the restricted-extras package, treat it as a package-index or repository problem first, not as proof that Ubuntu removed the package.

sudo apt updateagain and look for failed downloads, unreachable mirrors, signature errors, or a release that has no matching repository entry. - Check that the package name matches the desktop flavor. Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu use different names.
- Verify that the repository component containing the package is enabled. For standard Ubuntu this is Multiverse.
- Confirm that the enabled sources belong to the installed Ubuntu release. Repository configuration differs by release.
- Only after the update completes without repository errors, retry the install.
Changing sources at random or adding a third-party PPA is not a safe first response. Ubuntu does not check third-party repositories for security or reliability. An external source can introduce packages built for another release, duplicate packages from official archives, or make future upgrades fail.

Fix unmet-dependency errors
An error such as “unmet dependencies” is different from “unable to locate package.” It means APT found the requested package but could not construct a consistent set of versions. Save the entire error text, including the package names and versions it mentions.
Use the documented fix-broken operation
Ubuntu’s APT guidance documents this repair operation:
sudo apt-get -f installAccept the proposed changes only after reviewing them. This command asks APT to correct a broken dependency state; it is not a universal cure for every failure. If it reports a repository error, a held or conflicting package, or a package that cannot be downloaded, resolve that named problem and then retry the restricted-extras installation.
When the repair command does not solve it
- If the output names a failed repository, return to the repository checks and make
sudo apt updatecomplete successfully. - If it names conflicting versions, do not delete packages blindly. Record the conflict and determine which repository supplied each version.
- If it says another package operation is in progress, allow that operation to finish or close the other package manager before trying again.
- If the proposed transaction would remove a large part of the desktop, cancel it and inspect the source configuration rather than accepting it as a codec fix.
The error output is the diagnosis. The fix-broken command can restore a consistent package state, but it cannot decide whether an incorrectly configured repository or an incompatible third-party package should remain installed.

What to do when apt update itself fails
An install should not be trusted while the package-list refresh is failing. Match the visible symptom to the corrective action:

Do not hide update errors by repeatedly retrying the install. Each retry can produce a different-looking dependency message while the underlying index or source problem remains unchanged.
Ordinary media files and encrypted DVDs are separate cases
Restricted-extras addresses common media support, but encrypted commercial DVD playback requires a separate setup. Ubuntu’s help documentation explains that DVD support cannot be provided by default because of legal and technical restrictions.
For that DVD-specific branch, Ubuntu documents running:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkgThe procedure is intended to install libdvdcss2. It is not a replacement for fixing APT or installing the flavor-matched restricted-extras package, and it should not be used merely because a normal video file fails to play.
DVD decryption rules differ by country. Ubuntu cautions that using unlicensed decryption software may not be permitted in some jurisdictions. Verify your local rights before enabling DVD decryption, even if the command completes successfully.
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Using the Ubuntu package on every flavor: Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu publish their own restricted-extras names.
- Skipping the update output: APT’s package lists may still be stale when a repository refresh failed.
- Enabling an unrelated release: A source for another Ubuntu version can create incompatible dependencies.
- Adding a PPA as the first fix: Third-party repositories are not checked by Ubuntu for security or reliability.
- Treating the metapackage as a single codec file: It installs a coordinated set of packages and dependencies; application playback can still have separate limitations.
- Using DVD instructions for ordinary files: The
libdvd-pkgprocedure is specifically for encrypted DVD support. - Discarding the full error: The package and version named by APT often identify the repository or conflict that must be corrected.
A concise decision checklist
- Record the Ubuntu release and desktop flavor.
- Run
sudo apt update. - If update errors appear, correct the release-matched repository configuration before installing anything.
- Verify that Multiverse is enabled for standard Ubuntu, or that the appropriate component is enabled for the flavor and release.
- Install the matching restricted-extras package.
- If APT reports unmet dependencies, preserve the complete message and try
sudo apt-get -f installas the documented fix-broken operation. - If the goal is encrypted commercial DVD playback, follow the separate
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkgprocedure and check local legal requirements.
This sequence separates the three problems that are often confused: a missing package index, a broken dependency state, and a DVD-specific legal and technical requirement.
