Choose 12V max CXT when your priority is the lightest, most compact drill/driver for lighter work and you do not need the larger LXT ecosystem. Choose 18V LXT when you want a broader documented tool range, higher-demand options, or the ability to use smaller Sub-Compact tools without leaving the LXT battery platform.
The most important decision is the battery platform you already own. CXT and LXT batteries are separate systems; an LXT pack does not generally power a CXT tool, and a CXT pack does not generally power an LXT tool. Sub-Compact is a smaller tool class within LXT, not a third battery platform.

What is the difference between Makita CXT, LXT and LXT Sub-Compact?
Makita’s 12V max CXT and 18V LXT are distinct cordless-battery platforms. Batteries are designed to work with products in their respective platform, subject to model-specific exceptions. CXT uses 12V max slide-style batteries, while LXT uses 18V slide-style batteries. The voltage label is not a statement that one system’s batteries can be fitted safely into the other system’s tools.

LXT Sub-Compact tools can make the choice confusing. They have smaller, lighter bodies intended for work in tight spaces, but they still accept LXT batteries. Buying an LXT Sub-Compact drill therefore keeps you in the 18V LXT system; it does not commit you to a separate “Sub-Compact battery.”

Makita describes LXT as a single-battery system covering cordless tools and equipment. Its U.S. automotive page states that the LXT system had over 350 products in 2026. That is a manufacturer-published count, not an independent market comparison, and the available product information does not provide a current equivalent count for CXT.
Quick decision: which platform fits your situation?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already own LXT batteries | 18V LXT, including Sub-Compact | You can add a compact tool without buying into another battery system. |
| You already own CXT batteries | 12V max CXT | Additional CXT tools can share those batteries, provided each model is compatible. |
| Smallest and lightest drill for light work | 12V max CXT | The cited CXT hammer drill weighs less with its battery than the cited LXT Sub-Compact example. |
| Broader documented expansion path | 18V LXT | Makita reports more than 350 LXT products and offers both full-size and Sub-Compact tools. |
| Frequent use of large bits, big fasteners or demanding tools | 18V LXT | The platform includes higher-demand tool classes; choose the individual tool by its specifications rather than assuming every LXT model is stronger. |
| One compact drill with no plans for a large system | 12V max CXT | CXT can be a sensible, lighter solution when its available tools cover your needs. |
Compact drill comparison: PH05Z versus XPH15ZB
These two Makita hammer driver-drills provide a useful size comparison, but they are not a controlled platform test. They have different chuck sizes and belong to different voltage classes. The figures below are Makita’s published specifications.
| Specification | PH05Z | XPH15ZB |
|---|---|---|
| Platform and class | 12V max CXT brushless hammer driver-drill | 18V LXT Sub-Compact brushless hammer driver-drill |
| Published maximum torque | 280 in-lb | 350 in-lb |
| Published weight with battery | 2.4 lb | 3.1 lb |
| Published length | 6-5/8 in | 6-1/2 in |
| Chuck | 3/8 in | 1/2 in |
| Configuration noted on product page | Model specification; check whether a listing is tool-only or a kit | XPH15ZB is listed as tool-only; battery and charger are not included with the bare tool |
The CXT example is 0.7 lb lighter with its battery. The LXT Sub-Compact example has a higher published torque figure, a larger 1/2-inch chuck and a slightly shorter published length. Those differences do not establish that one platform will outperform the other in every job. A 1/2-inch chuck accepts larger shanks than a 3/8-inch chuck, while the actual result on a job also depends on the bit, material, speed setting, battery condition and operator technique.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Use the specifications to match your work. For cabinet hardware, small pilot holes, furniture assembly and overhead use, the lower weight of a CXT setup may matter more than nominal torque. For larger twist drills, hole saws, longer screws or work where a 1/2-inch chuck is useful, the LXT Sub-Compact example provides more published capacity while remaining smaller than many conventional 18V drills.
Battery platforms and compatibility
CXT batteries
Makita lists CXT capacities of 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah. The BL1041B is a 12V max CXT 4.0Ah battery. Its product information specifically excludes 12V max pod-style tools, batteries and chargers. That means the CXT label alone is not enough to confirm fit: identify whether your tool uses the current slide-style interface or the older pod-style design.
LXT batteries
Makita lists LXT capacities of 1.5Ah, 2.0Ah, 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah and 6.0Ah. The BL1850B is an 18V LXT 5.0Ah battery. Its compatibility notes distinguish tools with the relevant Star Protection marking or yellow battery receiver from older tools that lack those features. Check the exact tool and battery documentation before assuming that a particular 5.0Ah pack is approved.

What amp-hours do and do not tell you
Amp-hours describe listed battery capacity. They are useful when comparing packs within a platform, but they are not a universal runtime promise. A drill’s load, gear, bit size, material, temperature and control electronics affect how long a pack lasts. A 4.0Ah CXT battery and a 5.0Ah LXT battery also belong to different voltage systems, so comparing the amp-hour numbers directly does not tell you which will run a tool longer.
Product-specific exceptions
Some Makita products are documented as accepting more than one platform. The XRM06B job-site radio, for example, is listed as compatible with 12V max CXT, 14.4V and 18V LXT batteries. That is an exception for that product, not evidence that CXT and LXT drills or batteries interchange. Treat compatibility as a property of the exact model.
How to choose if you are starting from scratch
- List the jobs you actually expect to do. Separate light fastening and small drilling from hole saws, masonry drilling, long structural screws and other high-load work. A compact drill is not automatically the right tool for every task in either platform.
- Choose a battery direction before choosing a kit. CXT and LXT batteries are not a shared investment. If you expect to buy several tools, the platform decision affects every later purchase.
- Compare the tool with its battery installed. Published bare-tool weight can hide the handling difference that matters overhead or at arm’s length. Use the manufacturer’s with-battery figure where available.
- Check chuck size and bit inventory. A 3/8-inch chuck suits many general-purpose bits, while a 1/2-inch chuck accommodates larger shanks. Confirm that the bits and accessories you already own fit the proposed tool.
- Compare the complete kit contents. Determine whether the offer includes one or two batteries, each battery’s capacity, a charger, a case and accessories. A model number ending in a tool-only designation can look inexpensive until the required battery and charger are added.
- Verify exact compatibility. Check the product page for the tool, battery and charger together. Look for notes about pod-style CXT products, Star Protection or yellow LXT receivers, and regional model differences.
- Price the next two tools, not just the first drill. A cheaper starter kit can become expensive if the platform lacks the equipment you later need or forces you to buy duplicate chargers and batteries.
When CXT is the better choice
You value minimum weight
The cited PH05Z weighs 2.4 lb with its battery, compared with 3.1 lb for the cited LXT Sub-Compact XPH15ZB. That difference is noticeable during overhead installation, repetitive cabinet work and tasks where the drill is held one-handed for long periods.

Your work is mostly light-duty
CXT is a reasonable fit for furniture assembly, small pilot holes, trim and hardware installation, electrical and cabinetry work, and other jobs where a compact body and moderate torque are sufficient. Select a specific CXT tool based on its speed, chuck, clutch and hammer-drill features rather than treating “12V” as a complete performance specification.
You do not need the larger LXT range
If your likely purchases are limited to a drill, impact driver, light saw or small work light, CXT may provide all the capability you need. The decision changes if you expect to add specialized outdoor equipment, high-demand saws or other tools that are more extensively represented in LXT.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen LXT or LXT Sub-Compact is the better choice
You already have LXT batteries
LXT is the lowest-friction route when your charger and batteries are already in that system. Sub-Compact tools let you prioritize reach and reduced body size while continuing to use LXT packs. Confirm the individual tool’s battery requirements; “LXT” does not override model-specific compatibility notes.

You want one system with more documented options
Makita reports more than 350 LXT products in the United States in 2026. That figure includes a wide range of tools and equipment and is a company count, not an independent audit. It does establish that LXT has a broad documented expansion path. No equivalent current CXT count is established in the available product information, so it would be misleading to claim a precise LXT-to-CXT breadth ratio.
You need compact handling without changing platforms
LXT Sub-Compact is specifically positioned as a smaller and lighter class within LXT. It addresses the common “CXT or Sub-Compact LXT?” question by separating two decisions: tool size and battery platform. You can choose a smaller LXT tool for tight access while retaining compatibility with other LXT equipment.
Your work spans light and demanding applications
An LXT system can include a compact driver for finish work and larger tools for jobs that need more capacity. That flexibility does not mean every LXT tool is more powerful than every CXT tool. Compare the published torque, speed, chuck, cutting capacity and weight of the exact models.

- Assuming all Makita batteries fit all Makita tools: identify the platform, interface and compatibility markings. CXT and LXT are separate systems, and CXT pod-style products have additional restrictions.
- Calling Sub-Compact a third battery platform: Sub-Compact tools remain LXT products and use LXT batteries.
- Comparing amp-hours as if they were runtime: capacity is platform-specific and does not account for voltage, tool load or control electronics.
- Using torque as a complete performance ranking: the PH05Z and XPH15ZB have different chuck sizes and form factors. Their published torque figures are model specifications, not independent drilling tests.
- Buying a bare tool without pricing the battery system: verify whether the listing includes batteries and a charger. The XPH15ZB example is tool-only.
- Ignoring the battery’s physical weight: the lightest bare tool may not be the lightest working setup. Compare assembled weight.
- Assuming a radio exception applies to drills: the XRM06B’s multi-platform support is product-specific and does not create general cross-platform compatibility.
- Using an old charger or pod-style accessory by mistake: match the battery, charger and tool model numbers, especially when buying used equipment.
How to verify a kit before purchase
- Read the full model number, including suffixes that identify tool-only, regional or kit configurations.
- Open the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact tool rather than relying on a retailer’s category label.
- Record the included battery model numbers and capacities.
- Confirm that the charger is designed for those batteries and that the battery is approved for the tool.
- Check the tool’s weight with the specified battery if the product page provides it.
- Confirm chuck size, maximum bit capacity, speed ranges, clutch settings and hammer mode where relevant.
- For used or older equipment, look for platform markings and inspect the battery receiver before ordering replacement packs.
What the published evidence can and cannot prove
The available Makita information supports a platform and specification comparison, not a laboratory or job-site winner. There is no independent comparative test, consumer survey or market-share statistic establishing that LXT drills always outperform CXT drills. Manufacturer torque figures should be read as published specifications under the company’s measurement method, not as a promise of equal results across materials and bits.
The strongest documented distinction is strategic: CXT emphasizes a smaller 12V max ecosystem, while LXT offers a much broader documented range and a Sub-Compact class that preserves 18V battery compatibility. The right choice depends on the tools you will actually use, the batteries you already own and the handling trade-off you prefer.
Quick Recap
Final recommendation by buyer type
- Home user buying one compact drill: choose CXT if minimum weight and light work are your priorities; choose LXT Sub-Compact if you expect to add more tools later.
- Existing CXT owner: stay with CXT unless a required tool is unavailable or your work has outgrown the platform.
- Existing LXT owner: choose an LXT Sub-Compact model for compact handling rather than starting a second battery system.
- Contractor building a broad cordless lineup: LXT is the better-documented expansion path, with more than 350 products reported by Makita in 2026 and both full-size and Sub-Compact choices.
- Buyer focused on overhead comfort: compare complete tool-and-battery weights; the cited CXT drill is lighter than the cited LXT Sub-Compact example.
- Buyer needing larger accessories: examine chuck size and the exact tool’s published capacity; the cited LXT example uses a 1/2-inch chuck, while the CXT example uses a 3/8-inch chuck.
