MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service: a standardized, non-real-time way to send and receive messages containing text and supported media, such as photos, audio, or video clips. Unlike a live call, an MMS is a message delivered through a messaging service.
What does Multimedia Messaging Service mean?
NIST defines MMS as an accepted messaging standard for sending and receiving messages formatted with text, graphics, photographs, audio, and video clips. In everyday terms, it lets a message include supported media rather than text alone. NIST’s MMS glossary attributes its definition to NIST publications including SP 800-101 Rev. 1 and NISTIR 7250 and 7387.

How is MMS different from SMS?
SMS means Short Message Service and is generally associated with text messages. MMS supports multimedia content, so a single message can include text along with one or more supported media items. The exact features are not identical across every device or carrier implementation.

What can an MMS contain?
Depending on the implementation, an MMS may contain text, images, audio, or video. The 3GPP media specification describes combining multiple media elements into one composite message using MIME multipart formatting. For readers, the practical point is that an MMS can bundle several supported items together rather than being limited to one kind of content. 3GPP TS 26.140 specifies MMS media formats and codecs.

Is MMS a live call or a particular messaging app?
No. 3GPP describes MMS as a non-real-time messaging service framework: it is for sending and receiving messages, not for a live voice or video conversation. MMS is also a service standard, not the name of one particular app. How it appears to users depends on the messaging app, device, and carrier.
Do MMS formats and message limits work the same everywhere?
No universal current size cap or identical set of supported formats applies across all implementations. Practical limits and supported media can depend on the relevant standards, device, and carrier. 3GPP’s service requirements and functional specification describe the standards framework, not a guarantee of what any particular carrier currently allows. See 3GPP TS 22.140 and the TS 23.140 catalogue record.

Where did MMS come from?
MMS developed through 3GPP standardization. The official 3GPP MMS work item record notes that Release 99 established the concept, with later work adding detailed architecture and protocols. That history explains the standards framework; it should not be read as a promise about present-day carrier features.
