Mister Miracle is Scott Free, a New God who escapes Apokolips through intelligence, planning and extraordinary escape skill. Big Barda is a former Female Fury who defects from Darkseid’s regime, follows Scott to Earth and becomes his partner in both life and battle. Their relationship connects a personal story of liberation to the larger Fourth World conflict between Apokolips and New Genesis.
Who is Mister Miracle?
Scott Free was raised in the brutal world of Apokolips, Darkseid’s authoritarian planet. He was placed in Granny Goodness’s orphanage, an institution designed to break children and turn them into obedient soldiers. Scott’s defining act is not overpowering Apokolips but escaping it. He survives through preparation, mechanical ingenuity and the ability to see a way out of seemingly impossible situations.

DC identifies his first appearance as Mister Miracle #1 (1971), created by Jack Kirby as part of the Fourth World project. After leaving Apokolips, Scott builds a new life on Earth under the identity Mister Miracle, performing dangerous escapes and operating as a superhero. The character’s public act and private history mirror each other: every staged escape reflects his genuine liberation from Darkseid’s system.

Who is Big Barda?
Big Barda began as one of Darkseid’s Female Furies, an elite group of Apokoliptian warriors trained for absolute loyalty and combat. Unlike Scott, she was shaped by the system into one of its most formidable weapons. Her eventual defection is therefore both a political betrayal and a personal transformation.
DC lists Barda’s first appearance as Mister Miracle #4 (1971). She meets Scott on Apokolips, falls in love with him and ultimately rejects the role Darkseid assigned her. Her escape is not quiet or technical: DC says she fled Earthward while “battling her way through the hordes of Apokolips and her former allies—defeating them all.”
Barda’s personality complements Scott’s. He wants peace, privacy and a normal life after Apokolips; she is direct, battle-tested and comfortable confronting danger. Their differences create friction, humor and trust rather than making them interchangeable versions of the same hero.

They are both New Gods
Scott and Barda belong to Jack Kirby’s New Gods mythology, usually called the Fourth World. The setting is organized around two opposing worlds: Apokolips, ruled by Darkseid through fear and militarism, and New Genesis, associated with Highfather and a different model of leadership. Earth becomes the place where Scott and Barda try to choose their own lives while the interplanetary conflict continues around them.
Their romance is also an act of rebellion
Scott’s escape rejects Darkseid’s claim over his identity. Barda’s defection rejects the Female Furies’ entire chain of command. Their relationship joins those two forms of resistance. Scott offers Barda a life beyond obedience, while Barda gives Scott a partner who understands the violence he escaped and can protect him when diplomacy fails.

Earth becomes their chosen home
The couple’s move to Earth brings Apokolips’ conflict into the wider DC Universe. Darkseid remains a continuing threat, and his forces can pursue them through technology, agents and Boom Tubes. Their personal decisions therefore have consequences beyond a romance plot: every attempt to live freely challenges the political order of the New Gods.
Why their partnership matters thematically
- Scott represents freedom through reinvention: he turns a traumatic past into a new identity and career.
- Barda represents defection from an oppressive warrior culture: she leaves not because she is weak, but because she refuses to remain someone else’s weapon.
- Together they humanize the Fourth World: cosmic wars are filtered through marriage, trust, domestic disagreements and the practical work of building a home.
What powers and skills does Mister Miracle have?
New God physical abilities
As a New God, Scott has enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes and stamina compared with ordinary humans. These traits let him survive impacts, restraints and combat situations that would overwhelm a normal escape artist. They do not, however, explain his signature victories by themselves.
Escape artistry and problem-solving
Scott is presented by DC as the world’s greatest escape artist. He studies locks, restraints, timing, architecture, psychology and the behavior of opponents. His escapes are solutions to problems: he identifies the real constraint, prepares a hidden option and keeps his composure long enough to use it. This makes him dangerous even when an opponent is physically stronger.
Mother Box technology
Scott commonly uses a Mother Box, a sentient piece of Fourth World technology. DC lists functions that include:
- Energy transfer and manipulation
- Detection of danger and life signs
- Force-field generation
- Shock-wave projection
- Boom Tube travel between distant locations and dimensions
The Mother Box is not simply a teleportation device. Its sensing and defensive functions can help Scott plan an escape, while a Boom Tube can change the entire battlefield by opening a route that ordinary geography cannot provide.

Aero Disks
Scott’s modified Aero Disks provide flight at more than 200 mph, according to DC’s current character profile. That is the only directly relevant numerical performance figure established in the supplied official material; it should not be treated as a universal speed rating for every version or story.
What powers and skills does Big Barda have?
Exceptional New God strength
Barda possesses immense strength, along with enhanced speed, agility and stamina. DC characterizes her as the more physically powerful member of the partnership. She can absorb and deliver tremendous force, carry heavy equipment and continue fighting after injuries or exertion that would stop most heroes.
Elite combat training
Barda is a master of multiple combat forms and an expert swordswoman. Her experience as a Female Fury gives her discipline, battlefield awareness and familiarity with Apokoliptian tactics. DC states that she can fight Wonder Woman to a stand-still, an indication of her level rather than a universal ranking against every version of Wonder Woman.
Armor and the Mega-Rod
Her Apokoliptian armor augments her natural abilities and protects her in extreme combat. Barda’s signature Mega-Rod can:
- Fire powerful concussive bolts
- Increase gravitational forces against targets
- Teleport Barda and other people over great distances
The Mega-Rod gives Barda ranged force and mobility, but it does not replace her close-quarters skill. She remains a dangerous fighter even when separated from her equipment.

Is Big Barda stronger than Mister Miracle?
In raw physical power and direct combat, DC presents Big Barda as stronger. Scott is the brains-and-resourcefulness counterpart; Barda is the more powerful warrior. That is the clearest answer supported by the character profiles.

“Stronger” does not mean “more capable in every situation.” A locked room, hostage rescue or trap may favor Scott’s preparation and escape expertise. A stand-up fight against a heavily armed opponent usually favors Barda. Their effectiveness is complementary, which is why stories use them as a team rather than as a simple winner-versus-loser matchup.

Opposite temperaments, shared values
Scott seeks calm after years of coercion, while Barda is energized by challenge and combat. Their arguments often come from those different instincts. Yet both value personal choice, loyalty and the right to reject Darkseid’s control.
Protection is mutual
Barda can shield Scott physically, but Scott also protects Barda by helping her imagine a life not defined by violence. His patience and planning create options; her courage makes those options survivable. Neither partner is merely a sidekick to the other.

Domestic life is part of the mythology
Fourth World stories can move from cosmic battles to ordinary concerns without treating one as less important. Scott and Barda’s home life demonstrates what liberation is for: not only winning a war, but gaining the ability to choose where and how to live.

Where should you start reading the Fourth World comics?
The best entry point depends on whether you want the couple’s own adventures or the entire New Gods setting. These collections preserve different scopes of Kirby’s work and later interpretations.
1. Jack Kirby’s Mister Miracle
Start here if your main questions are “Who is Scott Free?” and “How do Scott and Barda meet?” DC describes this as a complete collection of Kirby’s Mister Miracle run in one stand-alone color volume. It gives the most direct route into Scott’s escapes, Barda’s defection and their partnership.
2. Jack Kirby’s Fourth World
Choose this broader collection when you want the surrounding mythology: Darkseid, New Genesis, the wider cast of New Gods and the political conflict behind the couple’s story. Mister Miracle and Big Barda remain central, but their choices are shown as part of a much larger saga.
3. Mister Miracle (2017)
This later collected series revisits Scott’s escape from Granny Goodness and Apokolips and his life on Earth with Barda. Read it after, or alongside, Kirby’s original material if you want a later interpretation. It is an iteration of the characters, not a replacement for their 1971 origin.

Kirby’s original Fourth World stories and later continuities should be kept distinct. Character histories, tone and continuity can change between eras, so details from the 2017 series should not be used to rewrite what happened in the 1971 debut.
What is known about a Mister Miracle screen project?
A 2025 secondary report discussed an animated Mister Miracle project, but described its DC Universe placement, release timing and platform as uncertain. Until DC or Warner Bros. publishes a current release listing, treat claims about where or when it will stream as unverified. The established starting point remains the comics, not an announced viewing schedule.
The essential difference between Mister Miracle and Big Barda
Scott Free survives Apokolips by refusing to let force define him. Big Barda escapes by turning the skills Darkseid gave her against the system that trained her. Scott’s intelligence and technology make impossible exits possible; Barda’s strength and combat mastery let her hold the line when escape is no longer an option. Their love story matters because it turns those differences into a shared argument for freedom—and places that argument at the heart of the New Gods’ war.
