To reduce blooming on a Mini LED TV, start with its Local Dimming or Local Contrast setting. Compare the available levels while familiar dark scenes are playing, then choose the strongest level that improves black depth without making subtitles, stars, or other small highlights disappear. No setting can guarantee that every halo will go away: dimming zones and the TV’s processing place limits on what adjustment can achieve.
Why local dimming is the first setting to check
A Mini LED TV controls its backlight in screen areas called zones. Local dimming lets the TV brighten or darken those areas independently, improving contrast in scenes that contain both dark and bright parts. Because a zone can cover more screen area than a tiny object, stronger dimming may also lower the brightness of small highlights. TCL notes that “very small light-emitting objects like a mouse may have reduced brightness as they are smaller than a single dimming zone” in its MiniLED Local Dimming Adjustment Options.

Manufacturers use different names and levels for this control. TCL documentation uses “Local Contrast,” while Samsung calls its control “Local Dimming”; the choices shown can also vary by model, picture mode, input, signal format, and region. Check the manual for your exact TV rather than assuming another model’s menu or recommended level applies. See TCL’s Local Contrast guidance and Samsung’s TV manual for examples of the terminology and options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare local dimming levels with scenes you actually watch
- Open the manual for your model and region. Find the picture-settings section and note the local dimming or local contrast label and available levels.
- Choose a suitable picture mode. Start with Movie, Filmmaker, or the closest accurate mode your TV offers, if available. Samsung’s manual, for example, describes Movie as suitable for dark-room viewing and notes that Filmmaker mode may appear darker; that guidance is specific to the models covered by that manual, not a universal rule.
- Play the intended type of content. Make adjustments with the relevant SDR, HDR, or Dolby Vision content and input active. TVs may store different settings for different modes or signal formats.
- Compare each available local dimming level. Some TCL products offer Off, Normal, and High; the cited Samsung manual lists Low, Standard, and High. These are examples, not a shared scale. Look at black areas, subtitles, stars, and small bright reflections. Keep local dimming enabled if it improves the scene overall, but choose a lower level if small highlights are dimmed or crushed.
- Check more than one scene. Revisit a mixed bright-and-dark scene, a night sky, and content with subtitles or small highlights. A level that looks good on one image may behave differently on another.
| What to compare | What to look for | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Dark areas | Whether blacks look deeper and the scene has better overall contrast. | Prefer a stronger level when it improves the whole scene without sacrificing important detail. |
| Small highlights and subtitles | Whether stars, bright reflections, or subtitle details become dim or hard to see. | Back off a level if these details are lost. |
| Different content and signal formats | Whether the setting behaves differently in SDR, HDR, Dolby Vision, or another input or picture mode. | Judge the format you watch; do not assume one setting behaves identically everywhere. |
The goal is a useful balance, not the highest menu value by default. Local dimming levels and their effects differ between TVs, so there is no universal “High” recommendation.

Keep brightness, contrast, and HDR processing separate
TV menus use several controls that can sound alike but affect the picture in different ways. Changing one to hide halos can cause a separate problem, such as losing shadow detail or changing the TV’s intended HDR rendering.
- Backlight or peak brightness: Adjust overall screen light output for the room and viewing comfort. This is not the same as local dimming.
- Brightness or black level: These labels may refer to the dark end of the picture. Lowering them indiscriminately to conceal halos can erase shadow detail.
- Contrast: A separate picture control from brightness and local dimming. Do not use the words interchangeably when navigating the menu.
- Shadow detail: Controls visibility in dark parts of the image; check it if dark scenes look crushed.
- Contrast Enhancer or Dynamic Contrast: Additional processing options. Test them separately rather than changing several controls at once.
- HDR Tone Mapping: A distinct HDR processing choice. Preserve the TV’s intended HDR mapping unless the exact model’s manual or a measured guide for that model supports changing it.
Samsung’s manual treats brightness, contrast, and shadow detail as separate picture controls. TCL’s support guidance likewise distinguishes Local Contrast from Peak Luminance. Menu names and availability depend on the TV.

When halos remain after adjustment
Some blooming may remain even after you find a good balance. A bright object can illuminate a zone that also covers nearby dark parts of the image, and the zone’s size and the TV’s processing affect how precisely the backlight can follow objects. Extreme changes to contrast, brightness, or HDR processing are not a guaranteed fix and may create other picture problems.
