How to Choose a USB Flash Drive: Capacity, Speed, and Connector Types

Choose a flash drive by considering the files you carry, the difference between USB interface rates and real read/write claims, and the ports on your devices.

Choose a USB flash drive by matching its usable capacity to the files you carry, checking read and write performance separately, and confirming that its connector and interface work with every device in your workflow. A USB-C plug does not guarantee a particular speed, and a drive’s advertised maximum read speed is not a promise of the same write speed.

1. Choose capacity for the files you actually carry

Start with an inventory of the files you expect to keep on the drive: documents and presentations take less space than large photo, video, or project-file collections. Choose enough capacity for that material, then leave room for additions rather than filling the drive immediately.

There is no single capacity that suits everyone. A teacher carrying documents may need far less space than someone moving large video files. As one product example—not a universal recommendation—SanDisk lists its Ultra Dual Drive Luxe in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants in its official product materials. Options and availability can vary by region and exact SKU, so confirm the current listing before buying.

2. Understand what speed figures mean

USB interface rates are not file-copy speeds

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) gives these signaling rates for the USB 3.2 family in its 2023 language and packaging guidance:

USB 3.2 label USB-IF signaling rate
Gen 1 5Gbps
Gen 2 10Gbps
Gen 2×2 20Gbps

These figures describe interface signaling, not guaranteed file-copy throughput. Actual transfers also depend on the drive, host port, and any cable, hub, or adapter in the connection. USB-IF says USB 3.2 is backward compatible and operates at the “lowest common speed capability” (USB 3.2 overview).

Read speed and write speed answer different questions

Read speed matters when you copy files from the drive to another device; write speed matters when you save files to the drive. Compare both figures when manufacturers provide them. A maximum sequential read claim alone does not establish write performance or how quickly the drive will sustain a large transfer.

  • Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
  • Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)

For example, SanDisk identifies the Ultra Dual Drive Luxe as USB 3.2 Gen 1 and advertises sequential read performance up to 400MB/s for specified variants. SanDisk qualifies that figure as read-speed based and says performance can vary with host device, usage conditions, and capacity; its product materials do not establish independent comparative write performance (manufacturer listing).

3. Match the connector to your devices

Connector or drive type What to check
USB-A The familiar rectangular plug; common on many older computers and desktop or laptop ports.
USB-C A smaller, reversible plug found on many newer computers, phones, and tablets. Its shape alone does not reveal the supported data speed.
Dual USB-A/USB-C Can connect to devices with either plug type, but check that each device supports the drive and your intended file use.

USB-C is a connector shape, not a speed rating. USB-IF notes that a USB 2.0 Type-C cable cannot support USB 3.2 or USB4 signals; connecting a faster host and device through a USB 2.0 product or cable limits the connection to USB 2.0 speed (USB-IF guidance).

4. Check compatibility before you buy

  1. Inspect the ports. Identify whether each computer, phone, or tablet you plan to use has USB-A or USB-C.
  2. Check device compatibility. Consult the device maker’s compatibility information. A matching USB-C port by itself does not confirm that a phone supports the drive or the file workflow you want; operating-system, host-mode, app, and file-system requirements may also matter.
  3. Check the whole connection. If you will use a cable, hub, or adapter, confirm that it supports the data capability you need. A slower intervening component can constrain the link.
  4. Compare the exact drive variant. Confirm its capacity, connector arrangement, interface label, and stated read and write information on the current product listing.

5. Make the choice by workflow

  • Mostly documents: Estimate the space your files use, add headroom, and prioritize a connector that fits the computer or devices you use.
  • Large video, photo, or project files: Allow more capacity and compare stated write performance as well as read speed, since writing large files is part of the workflow.
  • Moving files between older and newer devices: A dual USB-A/USB-C drive may avoid carrying a separate adapter, provided each device supports it.
  • Buying for a USB-C port: Check interface and cable capability separately; the USB-C shape alone does not promise a fast connection.
