Usually, no. If your Windows laptop’s sound works normally, you do not need to chase the newest audio driver or install one on a schedule. Microsoft recommends using Windows Update for relevant driver updates. If sound is failing, start with Windows’ troubleshooting and update options; if the trouble began after an update, a rollback may be more appropriate than installing another driver.
When to update—and when not to
For a Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop with working audio, check Windows Update for applicable audio-driver updates rather than replacing a functioning driver manually. Microsoft says audio drivers are commonly delivered through Windows Update and may appear as optional or recommended updates. If Windows offers a relevant update, install it and restart if prompted. If none is offered and sound works, there is no need to seek out a newer version just because one might exist. Microsoft’s audio-driver guidance
A driver update is one possible troubleshooting step when sound is missing, distorted, or otherwise malfunctioning; it is not a general maintenance requirement. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities for this task. If you need a manual download, use the laptop maker’s official support page and match both the exact laptop model and installed Windows version.
Choose a path based on the symptom

When comparing driver packages, verify the laptop model and Windows version, and consider whether the issue began after a particular update. A package for a similar-looking model is not a safe substitute for one specified for your machine.

Safe steps for a Windows laptop
- Check Windows Update. Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Install an offered audio-driver update and restart if Windows requests it. This is Microsoft’s recommended starting point for driver updates. Microsoft: Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows
- Check the output device and troubleshoot sound. Make sure Windows is sending audio to the device you intend to use, then follow the steps on Microsoft’s sound-problems page. A driver update will not correct every cause of missing or distorted sound.
- Search for a driver in Device Manager. Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers, select the audio device, and choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers. Restart after installation if needed. Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the laptop maker offers a newer model-specific package.
- Use the laptop maker’s support page if needed. Find the exact model—rather than relying on the product family name—and select the audio driver for the installed Windows version. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Roll back if the problem followed an update. In Device Manager, open the audio device’s Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, if available. Microsoft documents rollback for cases where audio worked before Windows Update. Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guidance and Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance describe post-update recovery options.
- Reinstall only as troubleshooting. If updating has not helped, Microsoft documents uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can reinstall it. Save open work before restarting. Trying the generic Windows audio driver is another troubleshooting option, not routine maintenance; follow Microsoft’s device-specific guidance.
If Windows is running on a Mac
Do not use the Windows Device Manager steps as if the Mac were running ordinary macOS. For Windows installed on a Mac with Boot Camp, Apple says Boot Camp Assistant normally installs Apple’s Windows support software. If built-in audio or other supported hardware is not working in Windows, check whether that support software needs to be installed for the Mac and Windows installation. What not to assume
- A driver labeled “newest” is not necessarily the right choice for a particular laptop; model and Windows-version compatibility matter.
- Windows finding no driver through automatic search does not prove the laptop maker has no compatible package.
- If sound failed immediately after an update, installing another driver may not be the best first move; rollback is a documented option.
- No hardware purchase is required simply to update an audio driver. The documented routes are Windows Update, Device Manager, the laptop maker’s support page, or—on a Mac running Windows—Apple’s Boot Camp support software.
