Yes, you can try playing Deadlock with a controller using Steam Input. However, the available official sources do not confirm full native controller support for Deadlock. Steam Input lets you choose or customize mappings, but a controller being recognized by Steam does not guarantee that every device or setup will work reliably.
What controller support means in Deadlock
Deadlock is Valve’s Steam game, but its official support page does not specify a controller-support tier or provide a Deadlock-specific setup guide. Valve’s general Steam guidance says that not every Steam game supports controller use. Steam distinguishes full controller support from partial support, where some setup or interface tasks may still require a mouse and keyboard. That general guidance is not a Deadlock-specific rating.
A third-party index lists Steam Input configurations for Deadlock, including layouts for Xbox and PlayStation controllers. These community-submitted layouts show that mappings are available to try; they are not a Valve guarantee or proof of native support.
How to set up a controller for Deadlock
- Connect a controller that Steam recognizes.
- In the Steam client, open Deadlock’s per-game controller configuration. Depending on the client version, look in the game’s Library or management options, or in controller settings; labels and locations can vary.
- Choose an available layout. Start with one intended for your controller type, and consider a community-submitted Deadlock configuration if one is listed.
- Launch Deadlock and check whether the actions you need work. If the layout is awkward or incomplete, return to the configurator and adjust its button bindings or input behavior.
Steam can translate configured input into regular Xbox controller input sent to a game. That explains how remapping may work even without straightforward native recognition, but it does not establish how Deadlock itself handles controller input internally.

Which controllers and layouts can you try?
Valve’s Big Picture help lists Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers as supported types within Big Picture. Valve says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported. These are Steam client compatibility statements, not a complete device guarantee for Deadlock.
The community Deadlock layout index includes Xbox One, DualSense, DualShock 4, Switch Pro, and other controller types. Check the details of an individual layout before selecting it: a configuration may map actions to mouse and keyboard inputs rather than use only gamepad actions. Available layouts do not establish that one controller or mapping is best.

If Steam or Deadlock does not detect your controller
- Check Steam first: Confirm that the client recognizes the controller and exposes its configuration options. If it does not, focus on device recognition before changing the Deadlock layout.
- Check connection and input mode: If the controller offers different connection or input modes, try another mode and see whether Steam recognizes it. This is a troubleshooting check, not a guaranteed fix.
- Revisit the layout: If Steam detects the controller but Deadlock actions do not register as expected, try another available configuration or remap the bindings.
In a forum thread opened May 13, 2026, one user reported that an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 in DInput mode was not detected by Steam Input for Deadlock. Another post discussed startup behavior and an April 17, 2026 Steam beta-client fix. These are individual, setup-specific reports; they do not establish a widespread current bug or a fix that applies to everyone.
