Start with classic square-grid Minesweeper. Its eight-neighbor number clues teach the core logic on a familiar board; once those rules feel clear, try a No Guess option if you want boards designed to avoid forced guesses, or a hexagonal variant if you want to learn a different adjacency system. Rules and features vary by game, so check the implementation rather than assuming every version behaves alike.
How classic Minesweeper works
The goal is to open every safe cell without opening a mine. On a classic square grid, each revealed number tells you how many mines are in the eight cells touching it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. A blank cell has no adjacent mines; many games automatically open nearby cells when you reveal one.

A common Beginner preset is a 9×9 board with 10 mines, according to Minesweepergame.org’s rules page. It is a useful starting point, not a universal requirement: board presets differ between games.
What changes between the rulesets?
For a beginner, the important differences are whether a board can force a guess, whether the clue geometry changes, and whether flags are needed to win.

| Ruleset | What changes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Classic square grid | Eight neighboring cells determine each clue. | Learn the standard number clues and deduction patterns. A common Beginner preset is 9×9 with 10 mines, per Minesweepergame.org. |
| No Guess | The board generator is configured to avoid boards that require a forced guess, in implementations that offer this option. | More opportunity to solve by logic, but the feature is implementation-specific. Minesweeper.org describes its No Guess mode as guaranteeing logic-solvable boards. |
| Hexagonal | Each cell has six neighbors rather than eight. | Clue patterns and adjacency deductions change. Minesweeper.org’s variant page describes hexagonal boards and beginner, medium, and hard sizes. |
| Microsoft Minesweeper Adventure Mode | The Xbox listing names this mode but does not explain its mechanics in enough detail for a complete rules comparison. | Check the current game’s instructions before assuming how it differs from classic play. The Xbox store listing says players use logic and strategy to clear the board. |
Are flags required to win?
No, in the rules described by Minesweeper Guide, flags are markers for suspected mines, not part of the win condition. You win by opening all safe cells. Use flags to keep track of deductions, especially when several clues overlap, but remember that a flag records your belief; it does not prove a cell contains a mine.
How to choose your first game
- Pick a Beginner square-grid board. Start with the common 9×9, 10-mine preset where available. Read each number as a count of mines among its eight adjacent cells.
- Use flags as notes, not as a substitute for reasoning. Mark cells you believe are mines, then revisit those marks as new numbers appear.
- Try No Guess if forced guessing is frustrating. Confirm the game explicitly offers the option. Minesweeper.org’s guide describes its own No Guess mode as producing boards solvable through logic; do not assume that feature exists in every classic game.
- Move to hexagonal play when you want a new challenge. The six-neighbor clue system differs enough that it is best approached as a new set of rules, rather than as a harder standard board.
Why classic rules are the best starting point
Classic square-grid play teaches the clue-reading skill that defines Minesweeper without adding a different board geometry. No Guess is a useful later setting if your chosen implementation provides it, while hexagonal play is a distinct puzzle experience. There is no single universal ruleset across every game or site, so use the specific version’s instructions when a mode’s behavior is unclear.
