Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) are driver-assistance features, not autonomous driving. What is the difference between Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised)?
Tesla describes its systems as advanced driver-assistance features. In its Model S manual, Tesla says every Tesla is equipped with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, which maintains a set speed and an adjustable following distance. Other functions, including Autosteer and Navigate on Autosteer, are available only on select vehicles. The exact Autopilot functions are therefore not necessarily identical across cars. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is a broader feature package. Tesla says it can follow navigation, change lanes, select route forks, navigate around objects, make turns and park, with the driver actively supervising. Is Tesla Autopilot or Full Self-Driving actually self-driving?
No. Tesla says its enabled driver-assistance features require a fully attentive driver and do not make the vehicle autonomous. The driver must be prepared to take over at any time. Intervention may be needed on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones or at complex intersections, according to Tesla’s Model S owner manual. Which vehicles and markets can get Full Self-Driving (Supervised)?
Availability is specific to the vehicle, not just the feature name. Tesla cautions that eligibility can depend on hardware and vehicle configuration. Its owner manual also notes that equipment or behavior may vary with the market region, manufacture date, model, options and software version. A market being listed for a subscription does not establish that a particular car is eligible.

How should Tesla’s safety claims be interpreted?
Tesla’s product page reports “7x” fewer major and minor collisions compared with its estimated U.S. average when Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is engaged. This is Tesla’s own comparison, not an independent finding established here, and it should not be generalized into a claim that the system is safer than a human driver in every situation. The same page displays a mileage counter that Tesla says increments at the average rate of fleet mileage per second; the company cautions that it may not include mileage increases from fleet growth or free trials.
