Move to diamond when you need to mine obsidian, ancient debris or other blocks that require diamond-level mining, then upgrade those diamond tools to netherite for the strongest late-game set. Wood and stone get you started; gold is fast but wears out quickly and is usually a specialist choice.

Choose a tool material by your stage of play
Minecraft tools use the same basic progression: a handle made from sticks and a head made from the material tier you select. The tier affects what the tool can mine, how quickly it breaks blocks, how long it lasts and how expensive it is to replace.
| Material | Best use | Mining capability | Durability and replacement | Progression fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | First tools and emergency replacements | Lowest mining level; suitable for basic wood and soil work | Lowest durability; easy to replace from logs | Opening minutes of a new world |
| Stone | Early mining and routine stone work | Reaches the stone-required ores, including copper, iron and lapis lazuli | More durable than wood; cobblestone is abundant | Early survival before a reliable iron supply |
| Iron | General-purpose survival tools | Reaches gold, redstone, amethyst and diamond ores | Strong balance of utility, durability and replacement cost | Practical workhorse for early and mid-game |
| Gold | Situations where very fast block breaking matters | Mining capability is not a substitute for an iron- or diamond-level tool | Low durability makes routine use costly | Specialist or temporary use |
| Diamond | Hard blocks and long expeditions | Required for obsidian and ancient debris; also handles every lower requirement | High durability, but diamonds take time to replace | Mid- to late-game milestone |
| Netherite | End-game tools and maximum durability | Higher mining level and breaking multiplier than diamond | Higher durability than diamond; made by upgrading a diamond tool rather than crafting a new head | Late-game upgrade |
For a normal survival plan, make inexpensive wooden tools only long enough to collect cobblestone, switch to stone, and then replace your main set with iron as soon as you can. Save diamonds for a pickaxe first because a diamond-level pickaxe unlocks the blocks that gate later progression. Netherite is an upgrade path for a good diamond tool, not a material you need to gather before basic automation or exploration.

Match each tool to the block family
Using the matching tool is about more than speed. A correctly tiered pickaxe is also what allows certain ores to drop their resources. The broad roles are:
- Pickaxe: Stone, deepslate, ores and other hard mineral blocks. It is the essential progression tool.
- Axe: Logs, planks and other wood-family blocks. Axes also serve as powerful melee options, although combat damage and behavior vary by edition.
- Shovel: Dirt, grass blocks, sand, gravel, clay, snow and similar soil-type blocks. A shovel can turn dirt or grass into paths when the block supports that interaction.
- Hoe: Tills dirt into farmland for crops and breaks many plant-based blocks faster than general-purpose tools.
A tool can still break a block without being the ideal match, but it may take much longer, consume durability inefficiently or fail to produce the block’s resource drop. Keep at least one pickaxe, axe and shovel available; add a hoe when you begin farming.
Understand mining levels before mining an ore
The tool’s material tier sets a minimum mining level for several ores and special blocks. If you use a tool below that threshold, the block may break without dropping its resource.
| Block or ore group | Minimum tool tier stated in the game guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Copper, iron and lapis lazuli | Stone pickaxe or better | Do not spend your first wooden pickaxe on these deposits if you need the resources. |
| Gold, redstone, amethyst and diamond | Iron pickaxe or better | Carry an iron-level pickaxe before mining these blocks. |
| Obsidian and ancient debris | Diamond pickaxe | Use diamond level or higher when you need the block or its drop for advanced progression. |
“Mining level” and “mining speed” are separate decisions. A gold tool can break some blocks very quickly, but speed does not let it bypass a block’s minimum tier. Select the tier first, then consider speed, durability and enchantments.
Craft the four core tools
Every recipe below assumes you have a crafting table, which provides the three-by-three grid needed for tool heads. Sticks are made by placing two planks vertically in a crafting grid; that produces four sticks, enough for multiple tools. Any plank type works for the handle, while the head uses the selected tier material: wooden planks, cobblestone, iron ingots, gold ingots, diamonds or the relevant recipe’s material.

Pickaxe
- Place three units of the chosen material across the entire top row.
- Place one stick in the center square of the middle row.
- Place one stick in the center square of the bottom row.
- Collect the pickaxe from the result slot.
Use the lowest tier that safely yields the block you are mining. A stone pickaxe is the first upgrade that matters for ore collection; an iron pickaxe is the normal everyday choice until diamond becomes available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAxe
- Place two units of the chosen material in the top-left and top-middle squares.
- Place a third unit of that material in the middle-left square.
- Place sticks in the center square of the middle row and the center square of the bottom row.
- Take the axe from the output.
The recipe also accepts the mirrored arrangement, with the material head on the right side. That flexibility lets you build the pattern from either side of the grid without changing the result.
Shovel
- Place one unit of the chosen material in the top-center square.
- Place a stick in the center square.
- Place a second stick in the bottom-center square.
- Collect the shovel.
Make a shovel early if you are clearing beaches, gravel or large areas of dirt. Its lower material cost makes it inexpensive to replace, so carrying a spare is sensible during long building sessions.
Hoe
- Place two units of the chosen material across the top-left and top-middle squares.
- Place sticks in the center square and the bottom-center square.
- Collect the hoe.
The mirrored head arrangement is also valid. A hoe’s primary job is preparing farmland, but it is useful for quickly clearing plant-based blocks when building or landscaping.
Sword and the shared recipe logic
A sword is not one of the four tools covered by the main block roles, but it demonstrates the same pattern. Place two material units vertically in the top-center and middle-center squares, then put a stick in the bottom-center square. In every case, sticks form the handle and the selected tier material forms the working head.

Durability: read the bar and plan around wear
Every tool has finite durability. Each eligible use consumes part of that durability, and the tool breaks when the supply is exhausted. The colored durability bar under the item icon gives a quick visual estimate: as the bar shortens, replacement or repair becomes more urgent.
Java Edition players can expose a numeric durability readout by enabling advanced tooltips. The setting is toggled with the advanced-tooltips control in the inventory interface; the item tooltip then shows the remaining and maximum durability values. Bedrock Edition’s standard interface emphasizes the bar instead of the same Java-style numeric display, so plan repairs by watching the bar and your workload.
Durability is consumed by the tool’s valid actions, not simply by carrying it. Mine with a pickaxe rather than punching stone, use an axe on logs, and reserve a high-value diamond or netherite tool for blocks that require its tier. Carry a cheaper backup when exploring so a break does not strand you far from a crafting table.
Repair tools without throwing away progress
Minecraft offers several repair routes. The exact availability and results depend on the item, the edition and whether enchantments are involved.
Combine two matching tools in a crafting grid
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place two damaged tools of the same type and tier into the grid.
- Take the single repaired tool from the result slot.
The output combines the remaining durability of both inputs and adds a small bonus. This is convenient for disposable or unenchanted equipment, but it consumes both original tools and therefore is not the best way to preserve a rare enchanted item.

Use an anvil when preserving an enchanted tool matters
An anvil supports repair and combination operations for eligible durability-enabled items. Put the damaged tool in the first slot and a compatible repair item or matching tool in the second slot, then review the output before confirming. The anvil route is the usual choice when you need to keep an enchantment configuration, rename an item or combine compatible enchantments. The interface displays the experience cost; cancel if the cost is unavailable or if the result is not what you intend.
Use a grindstone for a clean repair or reset
A grindstone can combine compatible damaged items and return a repaired result. It is also a reset-oriented workstation: using it can remove enchantments, so inspect the preview before accepting the operation. Choose it for ordinary equipment when you value a simple repair more than preserving the current enchantment setup.

Use a crafting-table combination for eligible items
Some durability-enabled items can be combined directly in a crafting table, following the same general principle as the two-tool repair: matching inputs produce one item with merged durability and a small bonus. If the recipe does not appear, the item or edition does not support that route; use the anvil, grindstone or a different compatible method instead.
Prevent wear with Unbreaking and Mending
Unbreaking reduces how often durability is consumed, extending the useful life of a tool without changing its material tier. Mending restores durability when the item is repaired through experience under the normal Minecraft rules. These enchantments address different problems: Unbreaking slows the loss, while Mending provides a way to refill durability as you continue earning experience. Apply them to tools you expect to keep, especially diamond or netherite equipment, rather than repeatedly repairing low-cost wooden or stone tools.

Microsoft’s creator documentation for item behavior is Bedrock-scoped. Treat a Bedrock-specific property or example as an instruction for that edition unless the game interface confirms the same behavior in Java. For durability management, Java’s advanced tooltips provide a numeric readout; Bedrock players generally rely on the bar. When a repair result, enchantment interaction or block behavior looks different, check the edition label on the documentation or in the game’s recipe and preview UI before spending a valuable tool.

First tools in a new world
- Turn logs into planks and sticks.
- Craft a wooden pickaxe only long enough to collect stone.
- Replace it with a stone pickaxe, then add a stone axe and shovel.
- Keep spare sticks and a few blocks of the current tier’s material for emergency replacements.
Building an iron work set
- Use a stone pickaxe to collect iron and other early resources that stone can safely harvest.
- Craft an iron pickaxe before attempting gold, redstone, amethyst or diamond ore.
- Make an iron axe for wood gathering and an iron shovel for large excavation jobs.
- Add an iron hoe when farmland and crop production become part of your base.
Moving to diamond
- Prioritize a diamond pickaxe because it meets the requirement for obsidian and ancient debris.
- Use the remaining diamonds for the tools you use most often rather than replacing every iron item immediately.
- Repair valuable tools instead of combining them casually in a crafting grid.
Upgrading to netherite
Netherite tools begin as diamond tools and are upgraded rather than crafted from a standalone netherite head. Make sure the diamond tool is the one you want to keep before upgrading, because its existing investment and enchantment plan are part of the decision. The upgrade provides higher durability, mining level, breaking multiplier and enchantability than diamond, making it most valuable on tools that see constant use.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The ore broke, but nothing dropped.”
Check the pickaxe tier against the block’s minimum requirement. Copper, iron and lapis lazuli need stone level; gold, redstone, amethyst and diamond need iron; obsidian and ancient debris need diamond. Upgrade the pickaxe before mining another vein.
“My tool is wearing out too quickly.”
Look at the durability bar and switch to the correct tool for the block family. Reserve high-tier tools for blocks that require them, combine matching damaged tools when the equipment is unenchanted, or use Unbreaking and Mending on a long-term tool.
“The anvil result is not what I expected.”
Verify that the two inputs are compatible, read the output preview and check the displayed experience cost. If preserving enchantments is not important, a grindstone or ordinary matching-tool combination may be simpler. Do not confirm a repair that removes an enchantment you still need.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“I cannot see an exact durability number.”
That is expected in the standard Bedrock interface. In Java Edition, enable advanced tooltips to expose numeric durability. In either edition, the bar remains the immediate indicator of remaining wear.
“The recipe does not appear in my grid.”
Confirm that you are using a crafting table for the three-by-three pattern, that the material is in the correct tier slot and that the sticks are aligned vertically where shown. Netherite tools are an upgrade operation for diamond tools, not a regular material-head recipe.
Quick Recap
Tool selection checklist
- Identify the block family: wood, soil, stone or plant-based material.
- Check the minimum mining tier if the block is an ore, obsidian or ancient debris.
- Choose iron for routine survival work unless a higher tier is required.
- Use diamond for the hardest ordinary mining tasks and as the base for a netherite upgrade.
- Watch the durability bar and keep a backup on long trips.
- Use crafting-grid combinations for inexpensive unenchanted tools; prefer an anvil when preserving enchantments matters.
- Apply Unbreaking to slow wear and Mending to restore durability through experience.
- Label every edition-specific behavior, especially combat and interface differences, before relying on it.
