Spawn eggs create a specific mob instantly. In an unmodified Minecraft world, you normally obtain them from the Creative inventory or with commands; ordinary, no-cheat Survival does not provide them. Once you have an egg, select it, use it on a suitable block to spawn the mob, use it on an existing compatible animal for a baby, place it in a dispenser for redstone automation, or use it on a monster spawner to change that spawner’s mob.

What a Minecraft spawn egg is
A spawn egg is an item tied to one mob type. It is not a single universal egg that can produce anything: a zombie spawn egg produces a zombie, a cow spawn egg produces a cow, and so on. Mojang’s official explainer described the family as “69 different items” in an article published January 6, 2022. That number is a dated count, not a current total for every Java and Bedrock release; new mobs, edition differences and catalog changes can alter it.

Can you get spawn eggs in Survival?
Not in a normal, no-cheat Survival world. Mojang states that spawn eggs are impossible to obtain without Creative mode or cheats. “Using a spawn egg in Survival” is a different question from “obtaining one through ordinary Survival.” If an operator gives you an egg, or you transfer one into your inventory by an allowed command or world-editing process, you can select and use it while your game mode is Survival. The item itself does not require Creative mode to function.

| Access route | How it works | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Creative inventory | Open the inventory’s item search or spawn-egg category and take the desired egg. | Requires Creative access; no Survival progression is involved. |
| Commands in Java Edition | Enable Allow Commands when creating the world, or open World Options and enable it later where the world permits that change. | Command availability depends on permissions and the current Java version. |
| Commands in Bedrock Edition | In a single-player world, open Game settings and turn on Allow Cheats. | Bedrock permanently disables achievements for that world after cheats are enabled, even if you later switch cheats off. |
| Server or Realm | An owner or administrator must grant enough permission for Creative mode or the relevant command. | Server rules and operator permissions determine whether you can use either route. |
Java Edition: enabling commands
- When creating the world, set Allow Commands to On.
- If the world already exists, open its world options and enable commands if that world and account have permission to do so.
- Use Creative inventory access or a
/givecommand to obtain the egg.
The exact menu wording can vary by release. If the option is absent, you are probably not the world owner or operator, or the current edition uses a different permission system.
Bedrock Edition: enabling cheats
- Pause the world and open Settings.
- Select Game.
- Turn on Allow Cheats, then confirm the warning.
- Use Creative inventory access or a command after the setting is enabled.
Read the warning before confirming: enabling cheats permanently prevents achievements in that Bedrock world. Turning the switch off later does not restore them.

- Place the desired egg in your hotbar.
- Select it.
- Aim at a surface with enough open space for the mob’s hitbox. A wall, ceiling or cramped enclosure may leave insufficient room.
- Press the platform’s normal use button. The mob appears immediately at the targeted location.
- Move away or contain the mob if it is hostile, large or affected by local spawning rules.
On a controller or touchscreen, use the same control you use to interact with blocks and items. On a mouse-and-keyboard setup, this is the normal right-click action unless you have changed your controls.
Making a baby animal
For mobs that have a baby form, aim the egg at an existing mob of the appropriate type and use it on that mob rather than on the ground. The result is a baby version when that interaction is supported. This is not a universal “baby” modifier: it does not turn every creature into a juvenile, and the existing mob must be the correct type. If the egg creates a new adult beside the animal instead, you targeted a block or a mob that does not support this baby-spawn interaction.
Using an egg in a dispenser
Spawn eggs can be automated with redstone.
- Place a dispenser facing the area where the mob should appear.
- Put the spawn egg in the dispenser’s inventory.
- Connect a button, lever, pressure plate, clock or other redstone trigger.
- Activate the trigger. The dispenser performs the egg’s spawning action at its output face.
A dispenser does not throw a spawn egg as if it were an ordinary chicken egg. It fires the egg’s special spawn action, allowing repeatable mob creation whenever the dispenser contains more eggs and receives another redstone pulse. Build a safe enclosure first when testing hostile mobs, because each pulse can add another creature.

Changing a monster spawner
Hold the desired spawn egg and use it directly on a monster spawner. The spawner changes the creature it is configured to produce. This is useful for custom farms and adventure maps, but it does not turn the block into a general-purpose spawner: the egg determines the configured mob, while the spawner’s own activation range, darkness requirements and nearby-mob limits still govern when it operates.
Getting an egg with a command
Commands use an item ID for the particular egg, not one universal “spawn egg” ID in Java. A typical Java command is:
/give @s minecraft:creeper_spawn_egg 1
This gives the executing player one creeper egg when commands are enabled and the account has permission. Replace creeper with the current entity ID for the mob you want. The general Java pattern is:

/give <player> minecraft:<entity>_spawn_egg <count>
For example, @s means the command’s executor, while @p targets the nearest player. A misspelled or outdated entity ID produces an error instead of an item.
Do not copy Java commands blindly into Bedrock. Bedrock’s command syntax and spawn-egg identifiers differ, and both editions change available entities over time. Check the command reference for the exact edition and game version you are running. On a multiplayer server or Realm, the command can still fail if the owner has not granted the required permission.
Java and Bedrock differences that matter
| Question | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Permission switch | Allow Commands is the relevant world permission described by Mojang. | Allow Cheats is enabled under Settings → Game. |
| Achievements | No equivalent permanent Bedrock-style achievement lock is noted for Java when enabling commands. | Achievements are permanently disabled in that world after cheats are enabled. |
| Command syntax | Uses Java item and entity IDs, such as the pattern minecraft:<entity>_spawn_egg. |
Uses Bedrock’s own command syntax and identifiers; verify them against the current Bedrock reference. |
| Egg catalog | Changes with releases and snapshots. | Can differ from Java because the editions do not always expose the same items or IDs. |
| Core use | Select an egg and use it on a surface, compatible mob, dispenser output or monster spawner. | |
Version and catalog caveats
Do not rely on an old list that claims to cover every spawn egg. The 69-item figure belongs to Mojang’s January 2022 explanation and should be treated as historical. The current list depends on edition, release and whether you are playing a stable version or a snapshot.

A useful example is Java snapshot 22w44a. That snapshot added Creative eggs for the Ender Dragon, Iron Golem, Snow Golem and Wither. In that snapshot, the Ender Dragon and Wither eggs remained command-only to reduce accidental destruction in ordinary Creative building. This is a dated snapshot behavior, not a promise that every current release exposes those eggs in the same way.
Before building a command block, dispenser system or map around a particular egg, check the entity’s current ID and whether the egg is available in your edition’s Creative inventory. A command that worked in a snapshot, an older Java release or the other edition may no longer work unchanged.
Troubleshooting spawn eggs
The egg is not in my Survival inventory
That is expected in a no-cheat Survival world. Switch to an authorized Creative or command route, or ask the server operator for permission. There is no ordinary mining, crafting or exploration recipe that supplies the normal spawn-egg family.
The command says the item is unknown
- Confirm that commands or cheats are enabled and that you have permission.
- Check whether you are using Java or Bedrock syntax.
- Verify the entity ID against the exact game version; names and available eggs can change.
- Make sure the command includes the correct namespace and the
_spawn_eggsuffix where that edition requires it.
Nothing appears when I use the egg
- Aim at a block face rather than empty air.
- Clear enough space for the mob, including vertical space for tall creatures.
- Check that the target is not blocked by another entity, a tight ceiling or a protected region on a server.
- For a dispenser, confirm that the egg is loaded, the dispenser faces the intended area and the redstone signal reaches it.
The egg creates an adult instead of a baby
Use the egg directly on an existing compatible mob. A ground click creates the normal mob, and some creatures do not have a supported baby form. Verify that the target species and egg species match.
The spawner did not change
Use the egg on the spawner block itself, not on the floor beside it. You also need a genuine monster-spawner block and permission to interact with it; a decorative map block or a protected server region will not accept the change.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right method
| Your goal | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Place one test mob while building | Creative inventory | Fast, visible and avoids command-ID typing. |
| Remain in Survival after receiving a permitted item | Use a supplied egg from an operator or authorized transfer | The item works in Survival even though ordinary Survival does not generate it. |
| Create a specific egg on demand | Command | Repeatable, but requires permissions and edition-correct syntax. |
| Produce mobs repeatedly | Dispenser plus redstone | Automates each spawn action while eggs remain in the dispenser. |
| Build a custom farm around an existing spawner | Use the egg on the monster spawner | Retargets the spawner instead of placing a separate mob each time. |
| Keep Bedrock achievements | Stay in a no-cheat world | Turning on Allow Cheats permanently disables achievements in that world. |
Key points to remember
- Each spawn egg is associated with a particular mob and spawns it immediately when used on a suitable surface.
- Creative mode and commands are the normal ways to obtain eggs; no-cheat Survival does not ordinarily supply them.
- Use an egg on an existing compatible mob for a baby where that mob supports the interaction.
- Dispensers and redstone make repeatable spawning possible, while direct use on a monster spawner changes its configured creature.
- Check your Java or Bedrock edition and exact game version before relying on an egg list or command.
