FiveM has no normal server.cfg switch that moves a server to another physical region. You can change the server’s declared language with sets locale, its discovery tags with sets tags, and its visible name with sv_hostname. To change where the server actually runs, you must move or redeploy the FXServer machine, VPS, or game-server instance in the desired geography.
This distinction matters: metadata changes what players see in listings, while the hosting location determines network distance, latency, jurisdiction and available infrastructure. The instructions below cover both jobs without confusing a locale change with a hosting migration.

What each FiveM setting changes
Before editing anything, decide which “region” you mean. FiveM server configuration exposes several related-looking settings, but they do different jobs.

Changing sets locale does not move the server, change its IP location or reduce ping. Changing tags only changes discovery metadata; tags do not install scripts, maps, vehicles or gameplay systems.

What “server region” means in FiveM
Locale or language
The locale is a declaration of the server’s primary language. It is written as a locale identifier such as en-US, fr-CA, nl-NL, de-DE, en-GB or pt-BR. It is not a hosting-location selector.
Listing tags
Tags are a single comma-separated description for server discovery. They help communicate the server’s style or major activities, but they do not alter gameplay. Keep the complete value in one quoted sets tags line.
Physical hosting geography
The machine, VPS or game-server provider location and its network endpoints determine the server’s actual geography. FiveM’s configuration metadata cannot move that infrastructure. A physical-region change is therefore an operations task: select a provider location, provision a new instance, copy the server, test it and then redirect players.

Names and project metadata
sv_hostname, sets sv_projectName and sets sv_projectDesc identify the server and project. They are independent fields, so changing one does not automatically update the others.
Before you edit the configuration
Find the active configuration
Identify the server.cfg loaded by the profile that actually starts your server. A machine can contain several configurations, and changing an unused copy produces no visible result. If txAdmin manages the server, its existing-server workflow and CFG editor operate on the active configuration. A provider-managed installation may expose the same file through a hosting panel instead of a normal file system.
Back up first
Make a dated copy of the active configuration before changing it. Preserve the original file, the startup profile or launch arguments, and any included configuration files. A backup lets you restore the previous metadata if a syntax mistake prevents startup or a listing change is undesirable.

- Use an account that can edit the active configuration.
- Plan a restart window; configuration values are normally read during startup.
- If the server is live, tell players about the restart and keep the previous configuration available for rollback.
- For a physical migration, confirm that the destination supports FXServer, required ports, backups and the network protection you need before shutting down the source.
How to change the language or locale
1. Open the active server.cfg
Open the configuration used by the running profile, either directly on the host or through txAdmin’s CFG editor. Do not edit a sample file or an old profile that is no longer passed to FXServer.

2. Add or replace the locale line
Use one valid locale identifier:
sets locale "en-US"Replace en-US with the appropriate value for your server, for example:
fr-CAfor Canadian Frenchnl-NLfor Dutch in the Netherlandsde-DEfor German in Germanyen-GBfor British Englishpt-BRfor Brazilian Portuguese
Do not leave the template value root-AQ in a production configuration. It is a placeholder, not a general-purpose region setting. Use the locale format supported by your server listing and keep the value in quotes.
3. Remove conflicting duplicate lines
If the file contains more than one sets locale entry, keep one intentional value and remove stale duplicates from the main file or included configurations. Multiple definitions make it difficult to know which value the active profile presents.

4. Save, restart and verify
Save the file and restart the server through its normal txAdmin or FXServer workflow. Check the listing from the client locations you care about. A browser or listing update may not be instantaneous, so allow normal refresh time before deciding that the change failed.
How to change FiveM server tags
Use one quoted, comma-separated value
Tags belong on a single line such as:
sets tags "roleplay, cars, racing"You can adapt the words to describe your server’s actual activities. Keep commas between tags and enclose the complete string in quotation marks. The tags are descriptive metadata for discovery; they do not create a roleplay system, add cars or enable racing content.
Replace stale values instead of stacking them
Search the active configuration and any files it includes for older sets tags lines. Remove obsolete or duplicate entries so there is one authoritative value. A correctly formatted line in an inactive file has no effect, and duplicate lines can make the displayed result confusing.
Restart and inspect the listing
Restart using the profile that loads the edited configuration. Then inspect the server browser entry and confirm that the intended comma-separated description appears. If the old tags remain immediately after restart, first verify the file path and profile, then allow for listing refresh behavior.

sv_hostname "Example City RP"Keep the value compliant with the server-command hostname rules. If a name is truncated or rejected, shorten it and remove characters that the command does not accept.
Set the project name separately
The project name is a separate metadata field:
sets sv_projectName "Example City RP"Changing sv_projectName does not automatically change sv_hostname. If you want the same wording everywhere, update both intentionally.
Add a project description
Use a separate description line:
sets sv_projectDesc "English roleplay server with an economy focus."The description identifies the project; it is not a replacement for tags. Keep the name, description and tags consistent so players receive the same information in each listing field.
Complete configuration example
The following block combines locale, tags, name and project metadata:

Editing through txAdmin
txAdmin is included with FXServer and provides a CFG editor and validator, so you do not need a separate resource just to edit these settings. Open the server profile that runs your instance, enter its configuration editor, and make the same changes shown above. The important detail is that the editor must belong to the active profile; editing a different profile will not change the running server.
- Open the txAdmin profile used to start the server.
- Open its CFG editor.
- Back up or copy the existing configuration.
- Add or edit
sets locale,sets tags,sv_hostname,sets sv_projectNameandsets sv_projectDescas needed. - Use the editor’s validation features, save the file and restart the profile.
- Check the listing and connect from a client to confirm that the intended profile is running.
Provider panels may use different labels, but the underlying values are the same. If a panel generates server.cfg, make changes in the panel’s supported editor rather than editing a temporary generated copy.
How to change the physical FiveM server region
If players are in the wrong geography or experience avoidable network distance, changing locale or tags will not help. You need to migrate the host.

Choose the destination using the right criteria

| Migration and backups | Can you copy resources, configuration, databases and persistent player data, and restore the old instance quickly? |
| DDoS and network protection | What protection and network design are included for this destination, rather than merely what country is advertised? |
| Operating cost | What is the current price for the exact plan and location, including any port, storage or backup charges? |
There is no universal “best” region. A location close to players may lack ports or protection, while a cheaper location may produce worse latency. Provider prices, capacity and included services vary by location, so obtain current figures for the exact plan instead of assuming that all regions cost the same.
Migration outline
- Record the current startup profile, configuration paths, resource list, databases and secrets that the server requires.
- Provision the destination machine or game-server instance in the chosen geography.
- Install or copy the FXServer setup and restore the backed-up configuration and resources.
- Recreate required firewall rules, ports, environment variables and database connectivity.
- Start the destination privately or during a maintenance window and test login, scripts, assets and persistence.
- Compare connection quality from representative player locations and verify that the listing identifies the intended instance.
- Announce the new endpoint or update the connection method used by your community.
- Keep the old server available until the destination is stable and the rollback backup is verified.
Migration pitfalls to avoid
- Copying only
server.cfg: persistent databases, resource files and external services may live elsewhere. - Changing the DNS or connection instructions too early: players can be sent to an untested instance.
- Forgetting ports: the destination must expose the ports required by your FXServer and panel setup.
- Leaving both instances public: players may join different copies and create inconsistent data.
- Discarding the source immediately: retain it until rollback and data integrity are verified.
The exact migration commands depend on the host operating system, deployment method and provider. Treat the move as a new deployment and document which system owns generated configuration files.

Use metadata editing when your goal is to present a different language, improve discovery wording or rename a project. Use migration when the goal is lower latency, a different country or city, a new network endpoint, or a jurisdictional requirement. These can be combined: after provisioning the new host, restore the configuration and then set the desired locale, tags and project fields before the final restart.

Troubleshooting common failures
The language did not change
- Confirm that the edited file is the one passed to the active profile.
- Check that the locale is valid and that
root-AQhas not been left as a placeholder. - Search included files for a second
sets localeline. - Restart the correct txAdmin or FXServer profile.
- Allow for ordinary listing refresh time before checking again.
The tags are missing or wrong
- Use one quoted line:
sets tags "roleplay, cars, racing". - Separate tags with commas rather than creating several unrelated
sets tagsdefinitions. - Remove stale duplicate lines from included configurations.
- Verify that the running profile uses the file you edited.
The server name is truncated or rejected
Review the hostname rules for the server command. Shorten the value and use a compliant name. Check sv_hostname independently from sets sv_projectName; changing the project name cannot repair an invalid host-name value.
Players still connect to the old country or have high latency
That is expected when only metadata was changed. Locale, tags and project fields do not relocate the machine. Confirm the destination host’s geography and network endpoint, then perform an actual migration if the physical region must change.
The edited values disappear after a restart
A management panel may regenerate the configuration, or you may be editing a non-active copy. Check the profile’s startup configuration, provider panel settings and included files. Save the desired values in the system that owns the generated file, then restart from that same system.
