Best Arma Reforger Settings for Performance and Visuals

Start Arma Reforger at native resolution and 100% render scale, lower view distance and shadows first, then use FSR 1.0 in measured steps when the GPU is limiting performance. This guide explains PC bottleneck diagnosis, image-quality trade-offs, PS5 Fidelity and Performance modes, PS5 Pro upscaling, and patch-sensitive settings.

The best starting point for Arma Reforger is your monitor’s native resolution at 100% render scale, with FSR 1.0 disabled. If frame rate is low, reduce view distance and shadows first. If the GPU is still the limit, step through FSR Quality (67%), Balanced (59%), and Performance (50%) in that order. When those changes barely affect performance, the limit is probably CPU, simulation, server, or mission workload rather than image quality.

  1. Set the game to the display’s native resolution and 100% render scale.
  2. Turn FSR 1.0 off while checking whether native resolution already meets your frame-rate target.
  3. Lower view distance and shadows before reducing all other quality settings.
  4. If the GPU is saturated, enable FSR 1.0 at Quality (67%). Try Balanced (59%) only if Quality is not enough, then Performance (50%) as a last image-quality step.
  5. Keep textures and texture filtering relatively high when your graphics memory allows it; these settings generally preserve surface detail better than reducing the whole image resolution.
  6. Set an FPS cap close to the rate your system can sustain. Test V-Sync separately because it can remove tearing but may add input latency.
  7. If lowering render scale, FSR, view distance, and shadows produces little improvement, investigate CPU, simulation, background applications, system requirements, and the particular mission or server.

There is no verified universal “best FPS” number for Reforger. Workload changes with player count, mods, weather, lighting, mission scripting, and the current game build, so the useful goal is a stable rate your system can hold rather than a figure copied from another PC.

Start with a trustworthy baseline

Use native resolution and 100% render scale first

Bohemia Interactive’s Video Settings guidance recommends the monitor’s default resolution at 100% render scale. Lowering rendered resolution can improve performance substantially, but the same guidance warns that the loss of image quality is very high. Native resolution therefore gives you a clear reference: you can see whether later gains come from a real bottleneck change or simply from making the image softer.

Choose the resolution Windows and your monitor report as native, not a higher output mode that your display scales down. Apply the setting, restart the game if requested, and test the same short scene before changing anything else. Record an average frame rate and the lowest readings you notice during traversal, combat, and busy areas. These observations are for your own comparison; no independent benchmark establishes a universal Reforger result.

Decide whether FSR is needed

FSR 1.0 is a resolution-reconstruction option, not a free image-quality upgrade. Leave it off when native resolution already delivers the rate you want. When the graphics card is the limiting component, use the game’s diagnostic scales as controlled steps:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
FSR 1.0 option Documented render scale When to try it Expected trade-off
Ultra Quality 77% Optional first reduction when you need a small amount of GPU relief Less detail than native, but the mildest reduction listed
Quality 67% Recommended first diagnostic step for a GPU-limited system More headroom with a visible reduction in fine detail
Balanced 59% Use when Quality does not meet the required rate Lower clarity and more reconstruction artifacts
Performance 50% Last step when additional GPU relief is necessary Largest documented quality loss of these modes

The 77%, 67%, 59%, and 50% values are the scales shown in the Bohemia Interactive Community diagnostic-menu reference checked in 2026. They are starting points, not guaranteed performance percentages. FSR cannot remove a CPU, server, or simulation bottleneck: if the frame rate barely changes after enabling it, return to native resolution and investigate elsewhere.

Which settings to lower first on PC

View distance

View or draw distance determines how far the game keeps terrain, objects, and other detail active. It can affect both CPU and GPU work, and it also changes tactical visibility. Reduce it in small increments rather than immediately selecting the minimum. After each change, revisit the same distant landscape or combat area and check both frame rate and whether important objects become difficult to identify.

Large environments make this setting especially consequential. Everon is listed by Bohemia Interactive as a 52 km² setting (2022), but the map’s size does not mean every system must render the whole island at full detail. A moderate reduction can be a sensible compromise; an extreme reduction may make distant threats or landmarks appear too late for your play style.

Shadows

Bohemia’s support guidance specifically calls out shadows, alongside view distance, as an early setting to lower when performance is poor. Shadow quality and distance can be expensive during daylight scenes, dense vegetation, and scenes with several light sources. Reduce shadows one level, repeat your test, and stop when the gain is no longer worth the visual change. Keep a note of the original value so you can restore it after a driver or game update.

Textures and texture filtering

Texture detail controls the resolution of surface maps, while texture filtering affects how those surfaces look at oblique angles and at a distance. The official reference documents these controls but does not publish universal quality-to-FPS numbers. If your graphics memory is sufficient, keeping them higher usually preserves ground, building, and equipment clarity better than lowering the entire render resolution.

If you see texture pop-in, severe stutter when turning, or an exhausted graphics-memory indicator, reduce texture detail before lowering every other setting. Texture changes can require a restart or a fresh map load before their memory use stabilizes, so judge them after the scene has streamed in.

Environment quality

Environment quality affects volumetric clouds, sky rendering, fog, cascade shadows, and rain quality. Lower it when weather or atmospheric effects coincide with drops, particularly if the frame rate changes as clouds, fog, or rain appears. This is a targeted way to reduce expensive effects without necessarily sacrificing texture sharpness or all object detail.

Anti-aliasing and depth of field

Reforger’s documented anti-aliasing choices include FXAA and SMAA, and its depth-of-field choices include None, Simple, and Bokeh. Select the least expensive combination that removes the shimmer or blur you actually find distracting. There is no official universal ranking that applies to every GPU, so compare the options in motion rather than judging a still screenshot.

Depth of field is primarily a presentation effect. If it makes sights, distant foliage, or fast movement appear soft, try None before reducing resolution. If shimmer is the larger problem, compare FXAA and SMAA at native resolution and keep the one that gives acceptable clarity for your display.

FPS limit and V-Sync

An FPS cap near the rate your system can sustain can reduce large swings and wasted rendering. Do not choose a cap from a benchmark you cannot reproduce; use the lowest rate you consistently hold in demanding scenes. A stable cap can feel better than a higher number that repeatedly collapses during combat.

V-Sync synchronizes rendered frames with the display and can prevent tearing. Its cost is possible additional input latency, which matters in a tactical shooter. Test with the same cap and scene both on and off. Keep the setting that matches your priority: cleaner presentation if tearing bothers you, or lower latency if responsiveness matters more.

A repeatable bottleneck diagnosis

Use a repeatable scene or a short play segment. A different mission, weather state, or player population can hide the effect of a setting, so change one variable at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record a baseline. Note resolution, render scale, FSR state, view distance, shadows, weather, map, and approximate player or AI activity. Record an average rate and the lows you observe rather than one peak number.
  2. Test render workload. Enable FSR Quality at 67%, or temporarily lower render scale. A clear improvement indicates that the GPU had useful work to shed. If the rate barely moves, restore native settings and continue.
  3. Test distance and shadows. Lower view distance and shadows one step each. Little or no change while the scene remains busy suggests the limit may be CPU-side, simulation-side, or server-side.
  4. Check CPU behavior. Bohemia Interactive states that CPU performance plays a major role. Watch whether one or more CPU cores remain heavily loaded while the GPU is not fully occupied. Mission scripting, AI, object updates, and multiplayer replication can all keep frames from rising after GPU reductions.
  5. Remove external interference. Close unnecessary background applications and overlays, then retest. Confirm that the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements, following Bohemia’s support guidance.
  6. Compare another workload. Try a less populated session or a different mission only as a diagnostic. A large difference points to content or simulation load, not necessarily a graphics-setting problem.
  7. Choose a cap and stop changing settings. Once you find a stable combination, cap near that sustainable rate and keep a record. Revisit it after patches because defaults and performance can change.

Practical PC profiles

These profiles are decision aids, not benchmark presets. “Target FPS” is not a universal value established by the available evidence; choose a cap your system can sustain in the scenes you actually play.

Why Reforger can remain slow after lowering graphics

Lowering image quality mainly reduces GPU work. It cannot guarantee a higher frame rate when the CPU must still process a large number of entities, scripts, physics updates, AI decisions, and networked state changes. Bohemia’s statement that CPU performance plays a major role is important in large multiplayer scenarios: a graphics card may have spare capacity while the game thread remains the pacing limit.

View distance can sit between the two categories. It reduces what must be drawn, but it can also change how many objects are considered and updated. If a small reduction produces no measurable gain, do not keep lowering it indefinitely. Restore a readable distance and investigate CPU load, mission scripting, server population, mods, and background processes instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weather, lighting, and mission conditions also matter. A clear training scene is not a reliable proxy for a night operation with rain, fog, many players, and scripted events. Compare like with like, and describe any result with its map, conditions, and session type.

PS5: Fidelity or Performance?

Bohemia Interactive’s PS5 analysis describes two priorities rather than one hidden best mode:

PS5 mode Target FPS Resolution and image strategy Visual settings Input feel Best fit
Fidelity 30 FPS target Higher-quality presentation; exact native/render resolution is not stated in the cited description Higher visual settings Lower frame cadence than Performance Players who prefer image quality and can accept a 30 FPS target
Performance 60 FPS target Lower settings and resolution; exact native/render resolution is not stated in the cited description Reduced settings to support the higher target More responsive motion and controls when the target is maintained Players who prioritize smoothness and responsiveness

Targets are not guarantees in every mission or server. Population, weather, mods, and simulation load can still affect consistency. Choose the mode according to whether you notice image detail or frame-time changes more readily; switching modes is the meaningful console adjustment available to you.

PS5 Pro

On PS5 Pro, Bohemia describes a higher native image before it is upscaled to 2160p with FSR 1.0. That is a platform-specific presentation detail, not a reason to assume every scene reaches a fixed frame rate. Evaluate the same Fidelity-versus-Performance priority on the Pro model and check the current build’s mode description after updates.

Night visibility and the November 2025 change

The November 21, 2025 update disabled night grain by default and disabled it on official servers after player feedback. Do not treat enabling night grain as a universal visibility fix. Check the current build and the rules of the server you join; a setting available locally may not apply on an official server.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Dropping resolution before testing the GPU. Start at native resolution and use FSR Quality as a measured step so you can see the image-quality cost.
  • Lowering every slider at once. Change one or two settings, repeat the same scene, and keep only changes that improve the lows you care about.
  • Expecting FSR to solve CPU limits. If 67%, 59%, or 50% produces little change, restore clarity and investigate CPU and simulation load.
  • Using maximum view distance without checking visibility needs. Reduce it modestly and verify that distant tactical information remains readable.
  • Assuming textures are always the first thing to cut. Keep them higher when VRAM permits; lower them when memory pressure causes streaming problems.
  • Judging a setting from a quiet scene. Test populated multiplayer, weather, lighting, and scripted activity representative of your normal play.
  • Copying an old preset after a patch. Settings and defaults are patch-sensitive. Recheck the menu after updates, especially following rendering or console-mode changes.
  • Confusing tearing with low performance. Test V-Sync independently from the FPS cap, because eliminating tearing can trade for latency.

A simple decision framework

If the native-resolution baseline is already smooth, keep FSR off and spend your time tuning shadows, environment effects, anti-aliasing, and a sensible cap. If the GPU is busy and the frame rate is below your cap, lower shadows and view distance, then try FSR Quality at 67%. Move to Balanced at 59% only when the gain is necessary, and use Performance at 50% only when you accept the substantial clarity loss.

If those GPU-focused changes barely move the result, stop sacrificing image quality. Check CPU utilization, mission and server load, background programs, and minimum requirements. A stable, readable native image at a realistic cap is preferable to a blurry image that cannot overcome a simulation bottleneck.

What can change after an update

Reforger is actively updated, and settings, defaults, console behavior, and server rules can change. The recommendations here reflect the documented FSR scales and PS5 mode descriptions available through 2026, but they should be treated as a method rather than a permanent preset. After a patch, verify resolution, render scale, FSR mode, view distance, shadows, V-Sync, FPS cap, and night-grain behavior before comparing performance with older notes.
