How to Set Up OpenLDAP and Perform Admin Tasks on a Linux VPS

Install OpenLDAP on an Ubuntu or Debian VPS, build your directory with LDIF, separate cn=config from data, enforce TLS, delegate access safely, troubleshoot slapd, and prove your backups with a restore test.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run OpenLDAP safely on an Ubuntu or Debian VPS, install slapd and ldap-utils, choose the directory suffix before importing entries, create the tree with LDIF, administer the dynamic configuration separately from directory data, and require trusted TLS for remote clients. The sequence below takes you from an empty VPS to a testable directory with repeatable administration, delegated access, logging, and a recoverable backup plan.

Plan the directory before installing packages

OpenLDAP is the open-source LDAP implementation used in Ubuntu. The most consequential installation choice is the directory suffix, also called the base DN. It is the naming root for every entry in the directory. A production deployment should use a DNS-based name that you control, such as dc=example,dc=com, rather than leaving a copied tutorial value in place.

Choose the VPS identity and suffix

  • Give the VPS a stable DNS name, for example ldap01.example.com. Clients must use a name that will also appear in the TLS certificate’s subject alternative names.
  • Decide the suffix before loading users, groups, or application data. Changing it with Debian’s package reconfiguration process discards the existing database, so changing it later is a migration, not a cosmetic edit.
  • Record the administrator DN created by the package. With the example suffix, it is commonly cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com.
  • Plan firewall rules for SSH administration and for LDAP traffic. Port 389 is used for LDAP and StartTLS; port 636 is used for the separate LDAPS listener when enabled. Expose them only to networks that need directory access.

Prepare administrative access

Keep a root-capable local path to the VPS for emergency work. Local administration of cn=config normally uses the Unix-domain listener ldapi:/// and SASL EXTERNAL authentication, so it does not depend on a remote directory bind working. For routine remote operations, use a named bind identity over TLS rather than putting the directory manager password in shell history.

Install OpenLDAP on Ubuntu or Debian

  1. Refresh package metadata and install the daemon and command-line client utilities:

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install slapd ldap-utils
  2. During package setup, provide the domain components and administrator password that correspond to your planned suffix. The package creates a minimal working configuration, a database instance, and an administrator DN.

  3. If you have not loaded useful data and need to correct the suffix, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure slapd

Ubuntu warns that changing the suffix discards the existing database. Treat this as a destructive operation and verify that no required entries are present first.

Set client defaults only after replacing examples

The command-line tools can read defaults from /etc/ldap/ldap.conf. Replace the example host and suffix with values that belong to your deployment:

BASE dc=example,dc=com
URI ldap://ldap01.example.com

These defaults do not configure the server and do not encrypt a connection. For sensitive operations, specify an authenticated, TLS-protected URI explicitly on the command line.

Keep cn=config and directory data separate

OpenLDAP has two configuration planes. Confusing them is a common cause of failed changes and incomplete backups.

Plane What it contains Typical administration path
cn=config Listeners, TLS certificate paths, schemas, indexes, logging, database definitions, and access rules Local ldapi:/// connection with SASL EXTERNAL, or another explicitly delegated configuration identity
Directory suffix, such as dc=example,dc=com Organizational units, users, groups, service accounts, and application attributes Authenticated LDAP operations such as ldapadd, ldapmodify, ldapdelete, and ldapsearch

Inspect the dynamic configuration locally with:

sudo ldapsearch -Q -LLL -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -b cn=config

The -Q option requests quiet SASL handling, -Y EXTERNAL uses the local operating-system credential, and -H ldapi:/// selects the Unix-domain listener. Do not assume that a successful cn=config search proves that a remote application bind works; they are different authentication paths.

Create the base tree with LDIF

LDIF is the line-oriented format used to create and change LDAP entries. Keep files readable and repeatable, but never commit passwords, private keys, or other secrets to version control. The following starting tree uses a suffix, a people OU, and a groups OU; adapt names and object classes to your schema.

dn: dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: top
objectClass: dcObject
objectClass: organization
dc: example
o: Example Organization

dn: ou=People,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: People

dn: ou=Groups,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: Groups

Import the entries

Once TLS is available, import the file through an authenticated connection. The -W option prompts for the administrator password instead of placing it in the command line:

ldapadd -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
  -D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f base.ldif

If LDAPS is not configured yet, perform the initial controlled setup locally or over a temporary protected path, then move all remote operations to TLS before allowing application binds. Do not leave a production directory accepting passwords over an unencrypted URI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the tree with ldapsearch

ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
  -D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W
  -b 'dc=example,dc=com' '(objectClass=*)' dn

A successful search should return the suffix and both organizational units. Use a narrow base DN and filter while testing so that a mistake is easy to identify.

Add, modify, and delete entries deliberately

Put each change in a small LDIF file and review it before applying it. For example, this adds a user entry; the password hash must be generated through a method appropriate to your environment and should not be stored in an unprotected repository:

sn: Lovelace
mail: [email protected]
ldapadd -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
  -D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f ada.ldif

To change an attribute, use a change record rather than resubmitting the entire entry:

dn: uid=ada,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com
changetype: modify
replace: description
description: Finance application administrator
ldapmodify -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
  -D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f change-description.ldif

Use add: when an attribute is absent, replace: when the intended value should become authoritative, and delete: when removing a value or attribute. Check the entry with ldapsearch after every significant change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ldapdelete is irreversible from the directory’s point of view and can break group membership or application references. Search for dependent references first, obtain a change record or ticket, and delete only the exact DN:

ldapdelete -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
  -D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W
  'uid=ada,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com'

Manage schemas without destabilizing production

A schema defines the object classes, attributes, and syntax rules available in the LDAP tree. An entry fails to add when it uses an undefined attribute, violates a required attribute, or supplies a value that does not match the attribute’s syntax. Ubuntu’s documentation demonstrates adding a converted LDIF schema directly to cn=config:

sudo ldapadd -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:///
  -f /etc/ldap/schema/corba.ldif

Do not add a custom schema casually on a production VPS. First test it on a disposable instance, confirm matching rules and indexes, and document the object classes that each application actually requires. Schema removal is not a routine undo operation: existing entries may depend on it, and a failed removal can leave the directory unable to start or serve data. Plan a migration and a rollback before introducing custom definitions.

Design ACLs and administrative identities

Start with a written access matrix instead of editing access rules reactively. The directory manager or root DN should be reserved for break-glass recovery; routine work should use named identities whose permissions can be audited and revoked individually.

Identity or role Access to define Operational purpose
Anonymous user Only attributes and searches that are intentionally public, if any Public lookup or no access, depending on policy
Authenticated user Self-service attributes only, where required Limited profile or password workflows
Application service account Read the exact subtree and attributes needed by the application Application binds and lookups
Help-desk operator Specific user attributes and approved reset or update operations Delegated support work
Directory administrator Full data administration; configuration access separately controlled Planned maintenance

ACL ordering matters: an earlier rule can prevent a later rule from taking effect. Test reads, searches, adds, modifies, and deletes with each role against a non-production copy. Verify both positive cases (the role can perform its job) and negative cases (it cannot read passwords, alter unrelated users, or change configuration).

Secure LDAP with trusted TLS

Remote LDAP binds carry credentials and directory data, so require encryption and certificate validation. Obtain a certificate whose DNS name matches the hostname clients use. The slapd process must be able to read the certificate, private key, and any intermediate CA file; protect the private key so only the service account can read it.

Set certificate paths in cn=config

Create an LDIF change such as:

dn: cn=config
changetype: modify
replace: olcTLSCertificateFile
olcTLSCertificateFile: /etc/ssl/certs/ldap.example.com.pem
-
replace: olcTLSCertificateKeyFile
olcTLSCertificateKeyFile: /etc/ssl/private/ldap.example.com.key
-
replace: olcTLSCACertificateFile
olcTLSCACertificateFile: /etc/ssl/certs/ca-chain.pem

Apply it through the local administrative socket:

sudo ldapmodify -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f tls.ldif

Check file ownership and mode if the daemon reports that a certificate or key cannot be opened. A certificate can be valid yet unusable when its private key is unreadable by the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test StartTLS and certificate validation

StartTLS upgrades an LDAP connection on port 389. Test it with the CA that issued the server certificate:

LDAPTLS_CACERT=/etc/ssl/certs/ca.pem
ldapwhoami -H ldap://ldap.example.com -ZZ -x

The -ZZ option requires StartTLS to succeed; it fails rather than silently continuing in clear text. Confirm that the hostname resolves to the VPS, the certificate SAN contains that hostname, and the client trusts the issuing CA.

Enable an LDAPS listener when clients require it

LDAPS starts TLS immediately on port 636 instead of upgrading a port-389 session. Debian documents enabling ldaps:/// in SLAPD_SERVICES and restarting slapd. After changing that service setting, open port 636 only to approved networks and test with an ldaps:// URI. Choose StartTLS or LDAPS according to client compatibility, but enforce encryption consistently rather than supporting an unprotected fallback.

Debian’s guidance notes that StartTLS is vulnerable to downgrade attacks. Require TLS in clients, reject failed upgrades, and migrate older clients before disabling plaintext access. An olcSecurity minimum such as ssf=128 can enforce a session-strength requirement, but apply it only after confirming that local ldapi:/// administration has a sufficient olcLocalSSF value; otherwise you can lock out your own maintenance path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logging and troubleshooting

Turn on statistics logging for an incident

Ubuntu documents changing the dynamic log level with this LDIF:

dn: cn=config
changetype: modify
replace: olcLogLevel
olcLogLevel: stats
sudo ldapmodify -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f logging.ldif
sudo journalctl -eu slapd.service

Use verbose logging temporarily when diagnosing bind failures, schema errors, ACL denials, or TLS negotiation. Statistics logging can be noisy, so return to a lower level after the incident and retain only the records required by your operational and security policies.

Follow the symptom to the likely cause

  • Cannot connect: check that slapd is running, DNS resolves to the VPS, the selected port is allowed by the firewall, and the client URI is spelled correctly.
  • TLS handshake fails: verify the certificate SAN against the exact hostname, confirm the client trusts the CA chain, check certificate and key paths, and ensure the daemon can read the files.
  • Bind is rejected: confirm the full bind DN, password, suffix, and whether the client is accidentally using an unencrypted URI that the server now rejects.
  • Entry is rejected with an object-class or attribute error: inspect required attributes and loaded schemas, then test the LDIF on a disposable instance before changing production.
  • Search returns fewer entries than expected: check the base DN, filter, search scope, and ACLs. Test the same query with a role that is known to have the required visibility.
  • An ACL change appears ineffective: review rule order; an earlier deny or restrictive rule may match before the new rule.
  • Local configuration access fails after security hardening: check the effective local session strength and the olcLocalSSF value before changing olcSecurity again.

Back up and restore the complete service

A data-only export is not a complete OpenLDAP backup. Preserve both the directory data under the suffix and cn=config, which contains listeners, TLS settings, schemas, indexes, logging, database definitions, and ACLs. Without the configuration database, a restored data export cannot recreate the service’s behavior.

  • Schedule encrypted, off-host copies and restrict access to the backup location.
  • Record the OpenLDAP and distribution versions used to create each backup so that restoration differences are known.
  • Document how the TLS private key and CA chain are recovered; do not place those secrets unencrypted in the backup repository.
  • Restore to an isolated VPS before relying on a backup. Confirm that the daemon starts, ldapsearch returns expected entries, application binds succeed, group membership is intact, and each ACL role passes both allowed and denied tests.
  • Record backup retention, the restore target, the person responsible for monitoring, and the time required to complete a recovery exercise.

A backup is unproven until a restore has demonstrated that applications can authenticate and receive the same authorization decisions as the original service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deployment choices to document

Write down these decisions in the VPS runbook. They are the differences that most often affect operations and migrations:

Decision Options to evaluate What to record
Operating system packaging Ubuntu or Debian package defaults Distribution release, package versions, and service settings
Encrypted transport StartTLS on 389 or LDAPS on 636 Client compatibility, certificate issuer, DNS name, and enabled ports
Administration path Local-only configuration access or approved remote administration Who can use ldapi:///, which bind DNs exist, and how break-glass access is protected
Authorization model Delegated ACLs or a single manager DN Role matrix, rule order, review schedule, and test results
Recovery model Single-node service or replicated directory Restore target, retention, replication design if used, and monitoring owner
Backup scope Data plus cn=config Encryption method, off-host location, versions, and key-handling procedure

Production hand-off checklist

  • The suffix and administrator DN are documented, and the suffix will not be changed casually.
  • The base entry, organizational units, users, and groups were imported from reviewed LDIF files.
  • Remote clients validate a trusted certificate whose DNS name matches the URI they use.
  • Plaintext binds are rejected or all clients have been migrated to StartTLS or LDAPS.
  • ACLs were tested by role on a non-production copy, including denied operations.
  • Schema additions were tested, documented, and tied to application requirements.
  • Logs are monitored, with verbose levels used only for diagnosis.
  • Encrypted off-host backups include both directory data and cn=config.
  • A restore exercise verified searches, application binds, group membership, and authorization behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between StartTLS and LDAPS for OpenLDAP?

StartTLS begins on LDAP port 389 and upgrades the existing connection; LDAPS starts an encrypted session on port 636. Use the mode your clients support, require certificate validation, and do not permit a plaintext fallback.

Why can a data export alone fail to restore an OpenLDAP server?

Directory entries do not contain the dynamic settings in cn=config. A usable recovery also needs listener, TLS, schema, index, logging, database, and ACL configuration, plus the protected key and CA-handling procedure.

Why does changing the suffix require special care?

The suffix is the naming root of every entry. Debian’s package reconfiguration can discard the existing database when the suffix changes, so choose it before importing useful data or plan a formal migration.
