Slimes have two practical farming locations: underground slime chunks below Y=40 and swamp biomes between Y=51 and Y=69 when their swamp spawning conditions are met. A slime-chunk farm offers the most control and usually the best ceiling for output; a swamp farm avoids digging a large underground room but is generally slower.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The reliable formula is simple: put platforms at the correct heights, leave enough clearance for the largest slime, keep the player in active range, and remove nearby caves and surfaces where competing hostile mobs can spawn. Then move slimes to a kill chamber and route the drops into hoppers and chests. Java and Bedrock do not share identical spawning behavior, so edition and simulation-distance settings must be treated as part of the design.

| Route | Where slimes spawn | What you build | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slime chunk | Inside a qualifying chunk below Y=40 | Several underground platforms, transport, kill chamber and collection | High control over spawn space and farm layout | Requires finding the right chunk and spawn-proofing nearby caves |
| Swamp | Swamp or mangrove-swamp terrain from Y=51 through Y=69 under the relevant nighttime conditions | Open-air platforms or a prepared swamp-area farm | No single-chunk underground excavation is required | Usually lower rates and more competition from the surrounding world |
The Minecraft Wiki’s current slime-farming tutorial says that every generated chunk has about a 10% chance of being a slime chunk. That probability is fixed when the world is generated; it is not improved by lighting, mining more blocks or placing a particular floor material. A seed-based finder can show likely slime chunks before you excavate.
How slime spawning works
Slime chunks use a height threshold
In a slime chunk, slimes can spawn when the spawning location is below Y=40. The farm therefore needs valid, empty spawn surfaces under that height. The chunk itself is the important condition: a random underground room outside a slime chunk will not become a slime farm merely because it is dark or deep.

Slime-chunk spawning is independent of light level. Lighting the platforms does not make slimes appear. Instead, lights are used to suppress other hostile mobs on the same platforms and in nearby spaces, helping slimes get a larger share of the available hostile-mob population.
Swamp spawning is a separate system
In swamp biomes, the tutorial places slime spawning between Y=51 and Y=69 and describes the activity as occurring at night. This route is not tied to one special underground chunk, so you can work with a wider area and avoid digging a large room. The trade-off is that a swamp farm normally produces less than a carefully prepared slime-chunk farm because terrain, water, darkness and other hostile-mob locations compete for spawns.
Population control matters more than darkness
The game repeatedly checks whether a location is valid, whether the relevant population cap has room, and whether the entity’s spawn rules are satisfied. Nearby caves, ravines, unlit ground and other dark surfaces can fill the hostile-mob population before your platforms are chosen. A farm that is technically in a slime chunk can therefore appear broken when the real problem is competition elsewhere.
Choose the right farm location
Choose a slime chunk when output and control matter
Use the underground route if you want a dedicated, predictable build. You can place platforms at known heights, isolate the spawning volume, bring slimes to one kill point and light or otherwise block competing spaces around it. It is the better choice when you are prepared to excavate and spawn-proof a substantial area.
Choose a swamp when excavation is the problem
A swamp route is useful when you have a suitable biome nearby and would rather prepare an open area than remove a large volume of stone. Because the farm is not confined to one chunk footprint, it can use a broader layout. Expect more variation from terrain and surrounding spawn spaces, and plan to test it in the actual edition and simulation settings you play with.

Find a slime chunk before you dig
- Record the world seed. Use the seed from the exact world in which the farm will be built. A copied seed from another world, a changed world type or a mistyped number can point to the wrong chunks.
- Select the correct edition and version in the seed tool. Java and Bedrock can apply different spawning rules. A finder result is useful only when its edition and version assumptions match your world.
- Choose a candidate chunk and note its coordinates. Mark the chunk boundaries and the location of the planned platforms before starting the excavation.
- Verify in the world. Treat the map as a locator, not as proof of a finished farm. Build a small test chamber below Y=40, provide a valid floor and wait while standing at an appropriate distance. If no slimes appear, recheck the seed, edition, coordinates and nearby mob competition.
- Plan the surrounding area. A good chunk can still perform poorly if caves and dark terrain within the active range remain available to other monsters. Include spawn-proofing in the construction plan rather than adding it only after the farm seems slow.
Underground exploration and testing can also identify a slime chunk, but it takes longer and can be misleading if other mobs are occupying the population cap. A seed-based finder is generally the faster way to select a site; in-game testing confirms that the planned area behaves as expected.

1. Mark the chunk and excavate the spawning volume
Keep the farm’s spawning platforms inside the selected slime chunk and below Y=40. Dig enough vertical space for multiple levels if your design uses them. Each level needs a clear, valid spawning surface and approximately a 2.5-block vertical gap, as described by the Minecraft Wiki tutorial. The clearance must accommodate the largest slime size; a cramped level can prevent the largest variant from spawning and reduce the number of useful spawns.
Do not assume that a platform is valid simply because it is flat. Check that blocks, ceilings, water and decorative elements do not obstruct the space in which a slime must appear. Keep access routes and redstone components outside the intended spawn volume whenever possible.
2. Light the platforms and nearby accessible spaces
Slimes do not need darkness in a slime chunk. Place lighting on the platforms to stop ordinary hostile mobs from using those surfaces. Then inspect caves, tunnels and open ground around the farm. Light, fill or otherwise spawn-proof every competing area that falls within the player’s active range. The objective is to reserve as much of the available hostile-mob population as possible for the slime platforms.
3. Set the player’s active position
Java-style operation requires the player to remain within the active spawning range of the farm. The tutorial recommends staying within 128 blocks of possible slime locations. Standing too close can prevent spawning; standing too far can leave the area inactive or allow mobs to unload or despawn. Build an AFK position that keeps every platform active while putting the player as far as practical from unsolved caves and other competing surfaces.

Do not copy a single AFK coordinate blindly between editions. Bedrock’s simulation distance and population-control behavior can change which parts of a build remain active. Test the position in the edition and world settings you actually use.
4. Give slimes a reason to move
Most farms funnel slimes from the platforms toward a central collection or killing point. Iron golems are commonly used as lures: slimes try to approach the golem, fall or move toward a channel, and are carried onward. Water channels and other transport systems are also possible, but swimming and pathing behavior differs by edition and version. Keep the lure protected so it cannot be killed, and make sure it is visible from the platform area you want to drain.
Transport should be tested before the farm is sealed. A small gap, an incorrectly placed water source or a path that is too narrow for a large slime can leave entities stranded on a platform, reducing both rates and collection reliability.
5. Build the kill chamber
At the end of the transport path, use a damage system that matches your priorities. Magma blocks, wither roses, soul campfires, drowning arrangements and cactus systems are documented options. Some methods are compact and simple; others preserve drops better or require more materials and protection.

6. Collect the drops
Place hoppers beneath the kill area and connect them to chests or another storage system. Test collection with a few slimes before opening the farm fully. Cactus can destroy part of the drops, so do not choose it when losing slimeballs is unacceptable. A kill method that leaves drops on a safe collection floor may be preferable even if it occupies more space.

Kill methods and their trade-offs
| Method | Why builders use it | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Magma blocks | Compact, familiar damage floor for a simple chamber | Requires a design that keeps entities on the damage surface and directs drops to collection |
| Wither roses | Strong damage option for a contained kill area | Dangerous to entities and players during construction; protect access routes |
| Soul campfires | Another damage-floor approach that can fit a compact chamber | Must be tested with the transport path and collection layout used in your edition |
| Drowning system | Can avoid some solid damage-floor arrangements | Water movement and entity behavior require edition-specific testing |
| Cactus | Simple materials and a familiar automatic-damage setup | Can destroy a portion of the slimeball drops |
There is no universally best kill chamber. Choose the method that balances construction cost, safety, drop preservation and how much maintenance you are willing to perform.

1. Confirm the biome and height band
The farm must be in a swamp or mangrove swamp area and use spawning locations from Y=51 through Y=69. The tutorial describes swamp slime spawning at night, so test the build during the relevant nighttime period rather than judging it during daytime.

Clear enough space for the intended platforms or open spawning surfaces. The same clearance rule applies: leave enough vertical room for the largest slime. Light surfaces where ordinary hostile mobs would otherwise spawn, while preserving the conditions required for swamp slime spawning. Because the surrounding biome is part of the route, do not place a platform so far outside the qualifying area that it no longer benefits from swamp rules.
3. Control nearby competition
Swamps contain uneven ground, water and many potential spawn locations. Remove or spawn-proof nearby caves and dark surfaces that can consume the hostile-mob population. If the farm is slow, inspect the surrounding area before rebuilding the platform itself.
4. Reuse the same transport and collection pattern
Iron-golem lures, water channels, a dedicated kill chamber and hopper storage can be used in a swamp layout as well. Test movement carefully: swamp terrain creates more opportunities for slimes to become stuck or for water to carry them away from the intended funnel.

Java and Bedrock: why a copied design may fail
Bedrock’s official spawn-rule documentation treats slimes as part of the monster population and describes checks involving difficulty, biome, surface or underground context and population control. Microsoft’s spawning overview describes a cycle that checks spawn conditions, finds valid locations, evaluates population caps and spawn weight, creates the entity and runs spawn events.
Those rules explain why a Java tutorial’s platform spacing, AFK location or expected rate cannot be treated as a Bedrock guarantee. Simulation distance determines how far the world continues to process activity around the player, and population caps determine whether a valid slime location is reached before another monster consumes the available capacity. Bedrock farms should be tested with the current game version, difficulty and simulation-distance setting rather than judged against an unverified Java rate.
Edition awareness is also important when choosing a seed finder. Confirm that the finder supports the edition and version of the world, then verify the candidate in-game. A map can identify a likely chunk; it cannot compensate for different spawn rules or a changed seed.
Troubleshooting: why no slimes are spawning
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No slimes in a supposed slime chunk | Wrong seed, edition, version or coordinates | Re-enter the exact world seed, select the correct edition and verify the chunk in-game with a small test chamber |
| Occasional slimes but very low output | Nearby caves or dark terrain are filling the hostile-mob population | Light, fill or otherwise spawn-proof competing spaces within the active range |
| Farm works only when standing in one place | Player is too close or too far from part of the spawning volume | Move the AFK position so every platform stays active without placing the player inside the no-spawn distance |
| Large slimes never appear | Insufficient vertical clearance or an obstructed spawn volume | Restore approximately the 2.5-block platform gap and remove blocks, water or fixtures that obstruct the largest size |
| Slimes spawn but do not reach the chamber | Broken lure sightline, water path or funnel | Test transport with each slime size, protect the iron golem and correct gaps or water-source placement |
| Slimeballs are missing | Cactus damage destroyed some drops or collection is incomplete | Replace the kill method if drop preservation matters; inspect hopper connections and storage capacity |
| Java design performs differently on Bedrock | Different spawn-rule checks, simulation distance or population caps | Use Bedrock-specific testing and account for current difficulty, biome, surface and population conditions |
Efficiency checklist before you call the farm finished
- Confirm the world seed, edition and version in the chunk finder.
- For a slime-chunk farm, keep every intended spawn surface below Y=40.
- For a swamp farm, keep spawning locations in the Y=51–69 band and test during the relevant nighttime condition.
- Leave approximately 2.5 blocks between platform levels and enough room for the largest slime.
- Light platforms to suppress competing hostile mobs; lighting is not required to enable slime-chunk spawning.
- Spawn-proof caves, ravines and dark surfaces within the player’s active range.
- Choose an AFK position that keeps the complete spawning volume active without being too close.
- Test the lure, transport route and kill chamber separately before sealing the farm.
- Check that hoppers point into storage and that the storage system has room.
- On Bedrock, retest after changing simulation distance, difficulty or game version.
What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
The useful fixed figures are location rules, not guaranteed hourly production rates: a generated chunk has about a 10% chance to be a slime chunk; slime-chunk spawning is below Y=40; swamp spawning is placed at Y=51–69; and Java-style guidance keeps the player within 128 blocks of possible slime locations. No universal slime-farm rate applies across editions, versions, simulation distances and degrees of spawn-proofing. Treat any claimed rate as conditional unless it specifies those variables.
