How to Use a Composter in Minecraft (Java and Bedrock)

Fill a composter with eligible food or plant items, wait for level 8, then use an empty hand to collect bone meal. This guide covers accepted inputs, efficiency, hopper automation and edition differences.

A composter turns eligible food and plant items into bone meal. Place the block, use accepted items on it until the compost level reaches 8, then interact with the full block using an empty hand to collect bone meal. You can also automate both input and output with hoppers.

What a composter does

A composter is a recycling block for farms and gardens. It accepts many plant-based items and some food items, building up compost one visual layer at a time. When the block reaches its full state, it produces one bone meal item when you use it with an empty hand. After the bone meal is collected, the composter returns to its starting state and can be filled again.

The block exists in both Minecraft: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The basic interaction is the same, but accepted-item lists and composting probabilities can differ between editions and game releases. Treat any percentage as version-specific rather than as a permanent rule for every world.

How to use a composter manually

  1. Place the composter. Put it on a solid, accessible block where you can reach its top and sides.
  2. Hold a compostable item. Select eligible food or plant material in your hotbar.
  3. Use the item on the composter. Right-click in Java Edition or press the use/interact control in Bedrock. A successful addition raises the compost level and consumes one item.
  4. Continue adding items. Keep using eligible items until the compost reaches its full appearance. Not every item necessarily raises the level, because each item has its own chance of adding a layer.
  5. Collect the bone meal. With an empty hand, use the full composter. The block gives you bone meal and becomes available for another cycle.

Technical block data represents the fill states as levels 0 through 8. Level 0 is empty; level 8 is the full state in which bone meal can be collected. The changing contents inside the block are a useful visual indicator, so you do not need to count every attempt.

What can go into a composter?

Most accepted inputs come from crops, seeds, flowers, leaves and other plant production. This makes the block especially useful beside a farm, where unwanted output can be converted instead of being thrown away. Excess seeds, cactus, flowers and harvested crops are practical examples of material players commonly recycle.

Mojang’s official composter explanation names bamboo, poisonous potatoes, dead bushes, meat and fish as exceptions. Do not assume that an item is accepted merely because it is organic or comes from a farm: test an unfamiliar item in your current edition and release.

Useful farm surplus

  • Seeds: Extra seeds from wheat, beetroot and similar crops are convenient because farms often produce more than you need for replanting.
  • Crops: Surplus harvested produce can become bone meal when it is accepted by your edition’s item rules.
  • Flowers and plant output: Decorative or automatically harvested plant material can be routed to a composter instead of filling storage chests.
  • Cactus: A cactus farm can provide a renewable stream for composting; a Peaceful-difficulty tutorial identifies excess cactus or seeds as an easy way to obtain bone meal without traveling to the Nether.

Named exclusions

The following items are specifically identified as exceptions in Mojang’s guide:

  • Bamboo
  • Poisonous potatoes
  • Dead bushes
  • Meat
  • Fish

These exclusions are more useful as a warning than as a universal item table. Java and Bedrock can change their data independently, and updates can alter which items are compostable. If an item will not insert, use a known farm surplus instead of forcing it into an automated line.

Why some items fill the composter faster

Compostable items do not all have the same layer probability. An attempted insertion can succeed and add one layer or fail without advancing the block. Higher-value items therefore require fewer attempts on average, while low-value items are best used when they are abundant and otherwise worthless.

Mojang’s official “Block of the Month: Composter” article gives beetroot seeds as a 30% chance example and hay bales as an 85% chance example. Those figures are examples published in that article, not a promise that every edition and current release uses exactly the same table. Bedrock add-on creators should rely on the item data for the target format instead of copying a Java table.

Input example Published chance example Best use Important qualification
Beetroot seeds 30% Use when you have a large surplus from farming. Example from Mojang’s official article; verify against your edition and version.
Hay bales 85% Use when you want efficient filling and can spare the stored wheat. Example from Mojang’s official article; it is not an edition-independent guarantee.

When comparing inputs, consider four things together: whether the item is accepted, its layer chance, how easily your farm supplies it, and whether you need the item for another purpose. A highly efficient item may be a poor choice if it is a valuable food or building resource. A low-chance seed may be ideal when a farm produces chests full of it.

How to collect bone meal reliably

For a small farm, manual collection is simple. Keep the composter beside the planting area, periodically dump in surplus items, and wait for the full visual state. Switch to an empty hotbar slot before interacting with the full block; using a held item can attempt to insert that item rather than collect the finished bone meal.

Once collected, bone meal can be used for tasks such as growing plants and crops or producing additional vegetation where the game allows it. Store the output in a nearby chest if you are producing more than you can spend immediately.

Recognizing a failed attempt

If the item disappears but the fill level does not visibly advance, that attempt did not add a layer. This is normal for lower-probability inputs. Continue feeding the block, or switch to a more efficient accepted item. If nothing happens at all, check that you are using the correct interact control, that the item is actually compostable in your edition, and that you are not trying to collect before level 8.

Automating a composter with hoppers

A two-hopper arrangement can feed a composter continuously and move finished bone meal into storage. The standard layout is a hopper above the composter for input and a hopper below it for output.

Materials and layout

  • One composter
  • Two hoppers
  • At least one chest or another container for input
  • A chest or container to receive bone meal
  • Compostable farm output, such as surplus seeds or cactus
  1. Place the output chest first. This gives you a clear target for the lower hopper.
  2. Attach the lower hopper to the chest. When placing it, point the hopper’s spout into the chest. The hopper should sit directly beneath the composter.
  3. Place the composter above the lower hopper. The lower hopper must be able to pull finished bone meal from the composter.
  4. Place the upper hopper on top of the composter. Its output end must point down into the composter. Sneak while placing if necessary so you can target the top face without opening the block.
  5. Connect an input chest or farm line. Point another hopper into the upper hopper, or put a chest directly above the upper hopper where the design permits.
  6. Load compostable items. Put surplus output in the input chest or connect the farm’s collection line. The upper hopper sends items into the composter as space and transfer timing allow.
  7. Check the lower chest. Once a cycle completes, the lower hopper transfers the produced bone meal into the output container.

This arrangement is useful for disposing of excess seeds and other farm output while producing a resource you can use elsewhere. It also lets the farm run while you build, explore or perform other tasks, provided the chunk containing the machine remains loaded and the input supply continues.

Manual versus automated use

Approach Setup cost Throughput Convenience Infrastructure needed
Manual Only the composter and a place to stand. Limited by player interaction and inventory. Best for occasional surplus. No hoppers or chests required.
Automated Composter, hoppers and containers. Runs as items arrive and hopper transfers occur. Best for farms that continuously produce waste. Upper input line and lower output line; storage is strongly recommended.

Designing a practical composting station

Place it at the farm’s waste point

Put the composter where excess output already accumulates. For a crop farm, that may be beside the collection chest. For a cactus farm, place the input line after the cactus drops have been gathered. Shorter hopper runs cost fewer resources and make blockages easier to diagnose.

Separate valuable items from waste

Do not send every farm drop directly into a composter unless you are certain none of it is needed. Route seeds, cactus or other deliberate surplus into the composting line, while sending food, rare crops and building materials to separate storage. A simple item-filtering system can help on larger farms, but the composter itself does not distinguish between “surplus” and “valuable.”

Provide enough storage

If the output chest fills, the lower hopper can no longer move bone meal out of the composter. That may stop the system from processing new cycles. Add a larger storage array or periodically remove the finished bone meal. Likewise, an empty input chest makes an otherwise healthy machine appear inactive.

Troubleshooting

The item will not go into the composter

  • Confirm that the item is compostable in your edition and release.
  • Check the named exclusions: bamboo, poisonous potatoes, dead bushes, meat and fish are not accepted according to Mojang’s guide.
  • Make sure you are using the block rather than opening a nearby container.
  • In an automated build, verify that the upper hopper points into the composter and is not locked by a redstone signal.

The composter fills very slowly

  • Low-probability items can require many attempts. This is expected behavior, not necessarily a broken block.
  • Use a more efficient accepted surplus when available. Mojang’s published examples illustrate the difference between beetroot seeds at 30% and hay bales at 85%.
  • Increase the supply rate from the farm or use multiple composters if one block cannot keep up.

No bone meal appears

  • Check the visual state: only level 8 is ready for collection.
  • Use an empty hand for the collection interaction.
  • In an automated system, inspect the hopper underneath and confirm its spout points toward a chest or other container.
  • Make sure the output container has room.

The hopper system does nothing

  • Trace the direction of every hopper. Hopper mouths receive items; the narrow spout points toward the destination.
  • Ensure the input container actually contains accepted items.
  • Look for a redstone signal locking a hopper.
  • Check that the lower hopper is directly under the composter and that the upper hopper is directly over it.
  • Remember that hopper transfers are not instantaneous; allow time for items to move through the line.

Java and Bedrock version considerations

The composter’s purpose is consistent across Java and Bedrock, but the exact accepted-item table and probabilities are data-driven and can change. Label percentages with the edition and release when documenting a build, and avoid treating an old community table as authoritative for a current world.

For Bedrock add-on authors, Microsoft Learn documents a composting_chance integer from 1 to 100 for items using the minecraft:compostable component. The documentation states that this component requires format version 1.21.60 or later. That creator-facing rule is not a reason to assume that every Java item table applies unchanged to Bedrock; it is a versioned reference for defining compostable behavior in Bedrock content.

Efficient ways to use the bone meal

Composting is most useful when it closes a farm loop. Replant what you need, divert only the surplus, and feed the resulting bone meal back into crops or other renewable plant production. A small manual composter is enough for a garden. A hopper-fed unit becomes worthwhile when a farm produces more seeds, cactus or similar output than you can store or use.

For Peaceful players, composting can provide a renewable bone-meal route from ordinary farm output without requiring a trip to the Nether, as described in a Peaceful-difficulty tutorial. In any difficulty, the same principle reduces storage clutter: waste becomes a useful input for growth instead of occupying a chest.
