There is no single RAM number that fits every Minecraft server. Your requirement depends on Java or Bedrock Edition, the server software, concurrent players, how quickly the world is explored, entities and redstone activity, mods or add-ons, and what else runs on the machine.

Use Mojang’s published Bedrock figures as anchors, not as a universal player formula: the Bedrock Dedicated Server page lists 4 GB of RAM in its system-requirements block and separately says at least 1 GB may be enough for a small server. Java’s official download page does not publish a RAM-per-player rule. The calculator below therefore estimates workload and headroom, then tells you what to measure before buying or renting more memory.

Mojang’s Bedrock FAQ states: “For larger worlds or more players, additional memory, storage, and processing power are recommended.” That wording matters because player count is only one pressure on memory. A quiet ten-player world can use fewer resources than a constantly explored, heavily automated world with fewer players.

How to use this RAM calculator
Think of the calculator as a workload estimator rather than a guaranteed formula. Write down each input, choose a conservative starting allocation, and leave enough physical memory for the operating system.
1. Select the edition and server software
- Bedrock Dedicated Server: begin with the official 1 GB small-server consideration and the 4 GB published requirement as reference points. Add headroom when the world, player base or add-ons grow.
- Java Edition: identify the exact server software (for example, the unmodified server, a plugin-oriented server, or a mod loader). Mojang does not publish a fixed multiplier, so do not present one as official.
- Cross-play or proxy arrangements: count every process. A proxy, bridge or map renderer consumes memory in addition to the game server.
2. Enter the maximum simultaneous players
Use the highest number likely to be online at the same time, not your total whitelist. Ten people joining briefly during an event can create a larger peak than twenty people who rarely overlap. Record expected peak and normal average separately; size for the peak, then verify whether it actually occurs.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Describe world activity
Classify the world as quiet, active or intensive:
- Quiet: a small, established area, little exploration, few animals and machines, and infrequent backups.
- Active: several players exploring, new chunks being generated, regular farms and villages, and routine backups.
- Intensive: rapid exploration by many players, large automated farms, dense entity populations, frequent teleporting, map generation or live map rendering.
Exploration and chunk generation can create short-lived peaks. Entities, redstone-like simulations, command systems and constantly loaded areas can create sustained load. A server that feels fine in a static base may lag when players spread out and generate new terrain.
4. Add software overhead
List every mod, plugin, datapack, add-on and auxiliary service. Large content mods may keep more data in memory; plugins can retain caches; add-ons can increase entity or simulation work. Backups, monitoring agents, web panels, voice chat, databases and proxy software also need memory if they run on the same host.

5. Reserve headroom
Never allocate all physical RAM to Minecraft. The operating system, Java runtime or Bedrock process, filesystem cache, backups and administration tools need room. If the machine has 8 GB total, an allocation that leaves only a few hundred megabytes for the OS is unsafe even when the nominal server allocation looks sufficient. Headroom is part of the calculation, not wasted capacity.
A practical estimator you can reuse
Use this worksheet for each planned change:
- Record the official floor: for Bedrock, note the 1 GB small-server consideration and 4 GB published requirement; for Java, note that no official RAM formula is provided.
- Choose a workload class: quiet, active or intensive, based on exploration, entities and automation rather than player count alone.
- Add software demand: include mods, plugins, add-ons, proxies and tools that run beside the game server.
- Subtract non-server memory: reserve capacity for the operating system, backups, monitoring and any other applications.
- Run a peak test: have the expected maximum players explore, generate terrain and use the busiest farms or areas at the same time.
- Measure before changing: increase the allocation only when memory pressure or swap activity is observed during realistic peaks.
This process produces a defensible number without pretending that one player’s presence always consumes the same amount of RAM. Keep a note of the allocation, player peak, software version and world activity whenever you change the setup; that history makes later sizing decisions much easier.

Bedrock Edition: interpreting 1 GB versus 4 GB
The apparent contradiction on Mojang’s Bedrock page is a distinction between a small-server minimum consideration and the published system-requirements block. The page says at least 1 GB can apply to small servers, yet lists 4 GB RAM as a system requirement. Those statements should not be collapsed into “1 GB is enough” or “every server must dedicate 4 GB to the game process.”
For a tiny private world, 1 GB is a useful lower-bound reference. It leaves little room for an operating system, backups or growth, so it is a poor target when several people will explore simultaneously. Use the 4 GB figure as the safer planning anchor for the machine, then keep additional capacity if the world is large, players are numerous or add-ons increase activity. Mojang explicitly recommends more memory, storage and processing power for larger worlds or more players.

Bedrock Dedicated Server supports supported Windows and Ubuntu Linux environments. If remote players connect, configure the host firewall and router as appropriate; the commonly used default Bedrock ports are 19132 and 19133. Confirm the current package documentation for your release before opening ports, and expose only the services you need.
Java Edition: why a player multiplier is misleading
Java servers vary widely by software stack and workload. The official download page requires a compatible Java runtime and may require firewall or port configuration, but it does not state “X GB per player.” A fixed multiplier would therefore give false precision.
Instead, distinguish the memory used by the Java process from total machine memory. The Java process needs enough heap for loaded chunks, entities, data structures and any mods or plugins. The operating system still needs memory for filesystem cache, networking, backups and administration. If you run a proxy or a second server on the same machine, each process competes for that pool.
For an unmodified server shared by a few friends, begin conservatively, test the busiest expected activity and watch real usage. Modded servers should be sized from the modpack’s documented requirements when available, then checked under a genuine player load. Large packs can require substantially more memory than a vanilla world, but the exact amount depends on the pack, version and configuration; do not transfer a number from one pack to another.

Self-hosting requirements beyond RAM
Memory cannot compensate for an unsuitable CPU, slow storage or a broken network path. Before allocating RAM, verify:
- Operating system and runtime: install a supported OS and, for Java Edition, a compatible Java runtime.
- CPU capacity: simulation and tick work can bottleneck on single-thread performance even when free RAM remains.
- Storage: world saves, new-chunk generation and backups need sufficient space and reliable write performance.
- Networking: configure the firewall and router only when remote connections are required, and document the listening port.
- Physical memory: keep total installed RAM above the server allocation so the OS and maintenance jobs do not force swapping.
- Backups and recovery: schedule backups outside the busiest period when possible, and test restoring one.
If the server begins swapping, latency can rise sharply even though the game process has not reached its nominal heap limit. Swapping is a system-memory failure signal, not a reason to keep raising the Minecraft allocation blindly.

Hosted server or your own machine?
A managed host packages RAM with CPU allocation, storage, backups, support, software installers and a network location. That can be simpler when you do not want to configure port forwarding, maintain Java or Ubuntu, or handle outages. The trade-off is less control and a recurring bill.
When comparing plans, inspect the whole resource bundle:

| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| RAM | How much is guaranteed, is it shared, and can you upgrade without rebuilding the world? |
| CPU | What processor generation and thread allocation are included? Is performance limited when neighbors are busy? |
| Edition support | Does the plan run Java, Bedrock or both, and does it support the version you need? |
| Software tools | Are mod, plugin and add-on installers available, and can you upload custom files? |
| Storage and backups | What storage type is used, how often are backups made, how long are they retained, and can you download them? |
| Network and support | What location, DDoS protection, uptime terms, support hours and refund rules apply? |
Published plan sizes are examples of what a provider sells, not proof that a given RAM tier will deliver a particular tick rate. Compare the workload you calculated with the provider’s CPU, storage and backup terms rather than choosing the largest RAM number alone.
How to tell whether RAM is the problem
Signs of memory pressure
- The operating system reports sustained high memory use or begins using swap.
- The server slows after long sessions as more chunks, entities or plugin caches remain loaded.
- Backups or map tools fail because there is not enough free memory for concurrent work.
- Increasing player activity causes process restarts or out-of-memory errors.
Signs that more RAM will not fix it
- Tick time is high while substantial memory remains free; CPU or simulation work is the likely bottleneck.
- Only new-chunk generation causes pauses; storage speed or CPU performance may matter more.
- Players experience connection delay while the server process is healthy; investigate network latency or routing.
- A specific plugin, mod or add-on causes the problem; update, reconfigure or remove it before buying memory.
A measurement routine
- Capture total physical memory, the game process’s working set or heap use, swap activity and CPU load.
- Repeat the capture during normal play and during a planned peak with maximum players exploring.
- Record which world, software version and mods or plugins were active.
- Change one variable—allocation, software, view distance or a mod—then repeat the same test.
- Keep the change only if the measured bottleneck improves without starving the operating system.
Worked planning cases
Private vanilla world for a few friends
Use the small-server end of the workload scale, but size for the highest simultaneous attendance and leave OS headroom. On Bedrock, the official 1 GB figure is a minimum consideration, while the published 4 GB requirement is the safer machine-level anchor. On Java, choose a modest starting allocation, test exploration and farms, and rely on measurements rather than a claimed per-player rule.
Growing survival server with regular exploration
Classify it as active: account for new chunk generation, more entities, routine backups and a larger peak. Keep free physical memory for the OS and increase capacity only after monitoring shows pressure during those peaks.
Heavily modded or add-on world
Start with the modpack or add-on documentation, count every extra process, and test the exact release and configuration. Mod count alone is not a reliable predictor; content, caches and entity behavior matter. If CPU or storage saturates first, additional RAM will not solve the lag.
When should you buy or rent more memory?
Upgrade when repeated, realistic peak tests show sustained memory pressure, swap use, out-of-memory failures or a clear improvement after temporarily increasing the allocation. Do not upgrade solely because a plan advertises a larger number. First check whether reducing unnecessary services, fixing a leaking plugin, improving storage or moving backups resolves the symptom.
If you buy hardware, verify the memory generation, DIMM or SODIMM form factor, ECC requirement and motherboard capacity before ordering. If you rent, confirm that the advertised RAM is dedicated or guaranteed, that upgrades preserve your world, and that the provider’s CPU and backup policies match your workload.
