What Metamod does on a CS2 server
Metamod is a mod loader and basic plugin API. It does not add admin commands, gameplay changes, menus, or other features by itself. Those capabilities come from separate plugins or frameworks that specifically support Counter-Strike 2 and Source 2.

The reliable first test is the server-console command meta version or meta list, not a visible gameplay change.
Source 2 uses a different installation method
Do not follow the traditional Source 1 Metamod procedure for CS2. The Source 1 branch and its usual loading instructions are not the supported method for Counter-Strike 2. CS2 uses the Source 2 development branch and a search-path entry in gameinfo.gi.

For Source 2, the supported loader mechanism is to place Metamod under the CS2 game directory and make that directory the first game search path. Using a GameBin entry instead of the required Game line will not load Metamod with this method.
What you need before starting
- Access to the server files. On a self-managed machine this is local filesystem or SSH access. A managed host normally supplies SFTP, a web file manager, or an equivalent file-transfer tool.
- Permission to stop and start the dedicated-server process. Metamod is loaded during startup, so copying files while the process is running is not enough.
- Console or RCON access. You need a way to run
meta versionormeta listafter the restart. - The current Source 2 build. Download the current 2.x development build from the official Metamod:Source downloads or releases page. Build numbers change, so use the live page rather than an old version number copied from a tutorial.
- A backup of the original configuration. Keep an untouched copy of
gameinfo.gibefore editing it. This gives you a quick rollback if a typo prevents the server from starting.
The same directory layout and configuration edit apply whether the server is on your own Linux or Windows machine or on managed hosting. The difference is how you obtain file, process, and console access.
Self-managed or managed hosting?
Metamod itself does not change between hosting types. Choose the arrangement that gives you the access needed for installation and future updates.
| Decision point | Self-managed server | Managed CS2 server |
|---|---|---|
Access to game/csgo/ |
Usually direct local or SSH access; you control permissions and backups. | Provided through SFTP, a control-panel file manager, or another host-specific method. |
| Stopping and restarting | You use your service manager, startup script, or hosting panel. | You use the provider’s restart controls; confirm that a restart is a full process restart. |
| Verification | Direct server console, terminal multiplexer, or RCON. | Web console or RCON, depending on the plan. |
| Operating-system packages | You are responsible for permissions and any required compatibility libraries. | The host controls the operating system; ask support if a legacy 32-bit dependency is needed. |
| Update workflow | You restore gameinfo.gi and update Metamod yourself after CS2 updates. |
You still need to check the file and Metamod build unless the host explicitly automates it. |
| Backup and recovery | You choose the backup schedule and rollback method. | Panel snapshots or provider backups may simplify rollback, but availability depends on the service. |
Install Metamod on the CS2 server
1. Stop the dedicated server completely
Stop the CS2 process before changing files. A running process will not load newly copied Metamod files until its next startup, and active file handles can make copying or replacing files unreliable. Wait until the process has exited, then continue.
2. Download the correct package
Open the official Metamod:Source downloads or releases page and select the current 2.x development build for Source 2. Do not select the stable Source 1 package simply because it has a familiar version label. The development build is the branch intended for CS2, and its exact number is intentionally variable as the game changes.
Download the archive to your computer or directly to the server if your hosting workflow supports that. Preserve the archive until the installation has been verified so you can repeat the copy if necessary.

3. Locate the CS2 game directory
Find the server’s game/csgo/ directory. This is the directory that contains the CS2 game files and the gameinfo.gi file you will edit. On a managed host, the panel may open at the server root; navigate into game, then csgo.
Do not confuse this location with a similarly named csgo_core directory. The required configuration file is game/csgo/gameinfo.gi, not csgo_core/gameinfo.gi.
4. Merge the archive’s addons/ directory
Extract the downloaded package. Copy the package’s addons/ directory into game/csgo/, merging with an existing directory if one is present. After the copy, the essential Metamod directory must be:
game/csgo/addons/metamod
Check the nesting carefully. A common mistake is creating game/csgo/addons/addons/metamod or placing metamod beside csgo instead of inside it. The path above is the one the search-path entry will reference.

5. Edit gameinfo.gi
Open game/csgo/gameinfo.gi in a plain-text editor. Before editing, save a backup such as gameinfo.gi.original outside the game directory or in your normal backup location.
Inside the SearchPaths block, add this exact line:
Game csgo/addons/metamod
Place it before every other Game entry. The beginning of the block should follow this pattern:
SearchPaths
{
Game csgo/addons/metamod
Game csgo
Game core
...
}
Keep the existing formatting and entries that follow it. The important requirements are the relative path csgo/addons/metamod, the Game directive, and the Metamod line being first among the Game search paths. Do not substitute GameBin, and do not put the line in csgo_core/gameinfo.gi.
If your existing file uses a slightly different amount of spacing between the directive and path, match that style; spacing is not the functional issue. The path and ordering are.

6. Save, restart, and wait for a full startup
Save the modified file, close the editor, and start the dedicated server again. Use a full stop/start rather than relying on a map change or a partial reload. Metamod is loaded during process startup.
Verify that Metamod loaded
Once the server has finished starting, open its console or connect through RCON and run:
meta version
You can also run:
meta list
A recognized command with Metamod version information, or a plugin listing from meta list, confirms that the loader is active. An empty plugin list does not by itself mean installation failed: Metamod provides the loading layer, while plugins are installed separately.
Run the test after every restart used for troubleshooting. If the command is recognized, the loader path and search-path entry are being read; investigate individual plugin compatibility separately.

Why meta list says “Unknown Command”
An unknown command means the server did not register Metamod’s console commands. Check the installation in this order:
- Confirm the server was fully restarted. Copying files or editing the configuration while CS2 is running does not load Metamod into the existing process.
- Check the destination path. Verify that the files are under
game/csgo/addons/metamod, not an extra nestedaddonsdirectory or a different game folder. - Check the file you edited. The path must be
game/csgo/gameinfo.gi. Editingcsgo_core/gameinfo.giwill not apply the required Source 2 configuration. - Check the exact directive. It must read
Game csgo/addons/metamodand be located insideSearchPaths. - Check ordering. Move the Metamod line above all other
Gameentries. A correct line in the wrong position can still prevent loading. - Confirm the package branch. Replace a Source 1 or obsolete archive with the current 2.x Source 2 development build.
- Inspect startup output and logs. Look for a Metamod load error or a path/permission error before changing unrelated server files.
After each correction, restart and run meta version again. This isolates one change at a time and makes it clear which fix worked.
Linux-specific diagnostics
On Linux, a warning about a 32-bit library can be non-fatal when Metamod’s command works normally. Treat the command result as the first test rather than assuming every warning means the installation failed.
If Metamod does not load, check for:
game/csgo/addons/metamod/bin/metamod-fatal.log, where load failures may be recorded;- file ownership and read/execute permissions for the account running the server;
- required 32-bit libraries on Debian or Ubuntu systems in legacy cases where the server or a dependency needs them.
The library requirement is conditional, not a universal prerequisite for every current installation. Install or change operating-system packages only when the server’s error output indicates that they are missing, and restart after correcting the dependency.
What to do after a CS2 update
Game updates can replace gameinfo.gi. When that happens, the Metamod search-path line disappears and the server starts without Metamod even though the addons/metamod files are still present.
After each CS2 update:
- Stop the server.
- Open
game/csgo/gameinfo.gi. - Restore
Game csgo/addons/metamodas the firstGameentry underSearchPathsif the update removed it. - Check the Metamod:Source releases page for a newer 2.x development build when Valve changes the game.
- Start the server and run
meta versionormeta list.
Keep a known-good copy of your edited file, but compare it with the newly generated file instead of blindly replacing the entire update. Valve may add or change other search paths, and those changes should remain intact.

Installing plugins after Metamod
Once meta version works, Metamod is ready to serve as the loader. It still has no gameplay or administration feature on its own. Select plugins that explicitly state CS2 or Source 2 compatibility and follow each plugin’s installation instructions; plugin requirements and directory layouts can differ.
Install and test one plugin at a time. If Metamod continues to answer meta version but a plugin fails, the base loader is functioning and the next investigation should focus on that plugin’s version, dependencies, and logs rather than repeating the Metamod file copy.

Frequently asked questions
Where exactly does the addons folder go?
Merge it into game/csgo/. The resulting Metamod path is game/csgo/addons/metamod.
What line belongs in gameinfo.gi?
Use Game csgo/addons/metamod inside SearchPaths, before every other Game entry.
Can I use the normal Source 1 Metamod installation?
No. CS2 requires the Source 2-compatible 2.x development branch and the gameinfo.gi search-path method.
Why does Metamod load but the server look unchanged?
Metamod is only a loader and API layer. Install a separate CS2-compatible plugin for gameplay, administration, or other visible features.
