If your Minecraft server works on localhost or your home network but friends cannot join through your public IP, troubleshoot in layers: server process, local network, host firewall, router forwarding, then your ISP’s upstream network. A public-IP test from inside the same home can also fail when the router lacks NAT loopback, so verify the final connection from a phone hotspot or another external network.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What the failure usually means
A public address is not the address your router forwards to. Remote players connect to your home’s public IPv4 address; the router then translates that connection to the Minecraft computer’s private LAN address, such as 192.168.1.25 or 10.0.0.12. Every layer must agree on the same port and protocol:

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The intended server JAR must be running and accepting connections.
- The server must listen on the computer’s network interface.
- The host firewall must allow the Java or Bedrock service.
- The router must forward the correct external port to the server computer’s private address.
- Your ISP or upstream gateway must provide an inbound-reachable public IPv4 address.
Do not start by changing router settings if localhost does not work. Port forwarding cannot repair a server that never started, is bound to the wrong interface, or is listening on a different port.
1. Prove that the correct server works locally
Launch the server from its own directory
Start the JAR you actually intend to host, from the folder containing its world, configuration files, and EULA acceptance. Minecraft Help’s setup guidance expects the server to be launched from that server directory. Watch the console for a message indicating that the server has finished starting rather than testing while it is still loading.

- Wait for the console to report that the server is ready.
- On the same computer, add a multiplayer server using
localhost(orlocalhost:portwhen you changed the port).
If the local connection fails, fix Java compatibility, the JAR, the EULA, missing files, or a startup error before investigating NAT. A crash, an immediately closing window, or a console exception is a server-process problem, not a public-IP problem.
Check server.properties
Stop the server before editing the file, then restart it after saving. For a normal home installation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Leave
server-ip=blank. A blank value allows the server to listen on available interfaces. Entering an address that is not currently assigned to the computer is a common cause of Failed to bind to port!. - Use
server-port=25565unless you deliberately selected another unused port. The Java default is 25565. - If you selected a different port, record it exactly; the router rule and the address remote players use must match it.
- Check for a second server process. Two processes cannot normally listen on the same address and port.
The public address is what remote players type; leaving server-ip blank does not mean players should type a blank or private address. It simply avoids forcing the process onto an invalid local interface.
Resolve “Failed to bind to port!”
This error is local and must be solved on the host. Clear any value in server-ip that is not shown by the computer’s active network interfaces, then restart. If the error remains, close another Minecraft server, proxy, or Java process that may already own the port. On Windows, netstat -ano can show the process ID using a listening port; on Linux, ss -ltnp shows listening TCP sockets. Use the result to stop the conflicting service or choose an unused port, then update every dependent setting.
2. Test from another device on the same LAN
Find the host computer’s private IPv4 address, not its public address. Windows shows it with ipconfig; Linux and macOS commonly show it with ip addr or the network settings panel. From another computer connected to the same router, connect to that private address and the configured port, such as 192.168.1.25:25565.
This test separates local problems from Internet problems:
- Localhost works, LAN fails: investigate the host firewall, the server’s bind address, the wrong port, Wi-Fi client isolation, or a server process that is listening only on loopback.
- LAN works, public access fails: the server and basic firewall path are probably sound; focus on the router rule, upstream NAT, or ISP restrictions.
- Both localhost and LAN fail: return to the server process and
server.propertiesrather than changing port forwarding.
Some guest Wi-Fi networks deliberately prevent devices from reaching one another. Perform the LAN test from the normal home network, not a guest SSID, and ensure both devices use the same address family and network segment.

3. Allow the server through the host firewall
A running server can still be invisible to other devices if the operating system drops inbound traffic. Permit the Java runtime or server application and the exact configured port on the network profile used by the host. On Windows, create an inbound rule in Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security; on Linux, add a rule in the firewall system you already use. Choose TCP for a Java server and UDP for a Bedrock listener.
A brief firewall-disable test can confirm the layer, but it is not a solution. If LAN connections work only while protection is disabled:
- Re-enable the firewall immediately.
- Create a narrow inbound rule for the server executable and configured port.
- Apply it only to the trusted Private/Home profile where possible, rather than every public network.
- Retest from another LAN device and then from outside the home.
Keep Java, the server software, and the operating system patched. Opening a port exposes a service to unsolicited Internet traffic, so do not leave the host broadly permitted just because a temporary test succeeded.

Router rules target a private LAN address. If DHCP assigns a different address after a reboot, the rule may silently point at another device and appear to stop working. In the router’s LAN or DHCP section, create a reservation for the server computer’s network adapter. A manually configured static address can also work, but it must remain outside the router’s automatic pool or be coordinated with that pool to avoid conflicts.
After reserving the address, reconnect the host or renew its DHCP lease and verify that it still has the expected private IPv4. Use that address as the forwarding destination; never enter the public address in the router’s “internal host” or “server IP” field.
5. Create the router port-forwarding rule
Java Edition
Open the router’s port-forwarding, virtual-server, or inbound-NAT page. Labels vary by manufacturer, but the required values are consistent:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| External/WAN port | The port remote players will use, normally 25565 |
| Internal/LAN port | The same value as server-port, unless your router intentionally translates it |
| Destination host | The server computer’s reserved private IPv4 address |
| Protocol | TCP for a normal Java server |
| Enabled | On |
Minecraft Help instructs owners to forward the port specified in the server configuration and gives 25565 as the usual default. The Minecraft Wiki likewise notes that this port must be forwarded when the host is behind NAT or a home router/firewall. If you intentionally changed the port, forward that configured value instead of assuming 25565.

Bedrock or Geyser
Bedrock uses UDP, not Java’s normal TCP path. Geyser’s documentation identifies missing UDP forwarding as a common reason Bedrock clients cannot connect. A typical Geyser listener uses UDP port 19132 when unchanged, but the value in your Geyser configuration is authoritative.
| Client and listener | Protocol to forward | Common default |
|---|---|---|
| Java server | TCP | 25565 |
| Bedrock through Geyser | UDP | 19132 when unchanged |
If both listeners are enabled, create separate rules. Forwarding TCP 25565 does not make a UDP 19132 Bedrock listener reachable, and forwarding UDP does not make a Java TCP service reachable.
6. Use the right address when connecting
Remote Java players normally enter your public IPv4 followed by the port, for example 12.34.56.78:25565. The suffix can be omitted only when the server uses the default port and the client accepts the default form. Players on your LAN should use the host’s private address; the host itself should use localhost for local testing.
Do not confuse these values:
- Public/WAN IPv4: the address friends on the Internet enter.
- Private/LAN IPv4: the address the router forwards to and nearby devices use.
- Server port: the port on which the Minecraft process listens.
- Query port: a separate server-query setting when enabled; do not assume a query rule replaces the game-traffic rule.
7. Test from a genuinely external network
Testing your public IP from inside the same home network is unreliable. A router without NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT) may refuse to send an internal client back through its own public address even though outside players can connect. Turn off Wi-Fi on a phone and use cellular data, ask a friend to test, or use another Internet connection.
If LAN access works but the external test times out, compare the router’s Internet/WAN IPv4 with the address shown by an independent public-IP service. Interpret the result as follows:
| Comparison | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Router WAN and public-IP result match | The router has a public address; recheck the rule, protocol, firewall, and port. | Confirm the rule targets the current private address and test the exact configured port externally. |
| Router WAN is private (for example 10.x.x.x, 172.16–31.x.x, 192.168.x.x, or 100.64–100.127.x.x) while the public-IP result differs | Upstream NAT, carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), or an ISP gateway sits in front of your router. | Forward on the upstream device too, place the ISP gateway in bridge mode where supported, or request a reachable public IPv4. |
| Two consumer routers are present | Double NAT prevents the outside connection from reaching the server. | Bridge or remove one router, or forward the port through both layers to the server. |
| Address changes periodically | Your ISP may assign a dynamic public IPv4. | Recheck the current address before each test; use a suitable dynamic-DNS arrangement only if you understand its security and update requirements. |
If the ISP will not provide inbound IPv4, self-hosting through a home port may not be possible. A managed Minecraft host or a network-access service can avoid exposing your home router, but it changes the cost, control, and administration model. Do not buy replacement router hardware until you know whether the restriction is upstream; a new router cannot remove CGNAT imposed by the ISP.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Match the error to the failing layer
Connection timed out
A timeout usually means packets were dropped or filtered before a service answered. Check the external forward, the protocol, the host firewall, an upstream NAT layer, and whether the public address is current. Verify from a hotspot rather than relying on an in-home public-IP test.

Connection refused
Refusal generally means the destination was reachable but no service accepted the connection on that port, or a device actively rejected it. Confirm that the Java server is running, that server-port matches the rule, and that no proxy or second service is expected to listen there.
Unknown host or malformed address
Check for typing errors, an accidental protocol prefix, an outdated DNS name, or an incorrect SRV record. Test with the numeric public IPv4 first; add a hostname only after the numeric address works.
Failed to bind to port
This is a host-side interface or process conflict. Clear an invalid server-ip, stop the process already using the port, and restart the intended server. Router changes are irrelevant until the service binds successfully.
9. A repeatable troubleshooting order
Use this checklist after every configuration change so you know which change mattered:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Start the intended server JAR and confirm it reaches its ready state.
- Connect on the host with
localhost. - Confirm
server-ip=is blank unless you have a specific, active interface address, and record the exact configured port. - Connect from another device using the host’s private IPv4.
- Allow the Java or Bedrock service and the correct protocol through the host firewall.
- Reserve the host’s private address in DHCP.
- Forward the exact Java TCP or Bedrock/Geyser UDP port from the router to that address.
- Compare the router WAN address with an independent public-IP result.
- Test from cellular data or another external connection.
- Only after the connection works, add convenience features such as a hostname, whitelist, or alternate port.
Changing several layers at once makes the result impossible to interpret. Keep a note of the private address, external port, protocol, router rule, and test result for each attempt.
Security checks before sharing the address
Port forwarding exposes the server service to Internet scanning and attack attempts. Share the public address only with intended players and take basic precautions:
- Keep the server software, Java runtime, operating system, and router firmware updated.
- Use the server’s whitelist and grant operator privileges only to trusted people.
- Allow only the required port, not broad ranges or an “any application” rule.
- Do not expose administrative consoles, remote desktop, database ports, or RCON to the Internet unless you have secured them separately.
- Back up worlds and configuration files before changing versions or plugins.
- Review router logs and server logs for unexpected connection attempts.
If you cannot obtain a stable public IPv4, cannot administer the upstream gateway, or do not want an Internet-facing home service, use a managed or tunnel-based arrangement instead of repeatedly weakening firewall rules.
When the fix is complete
A successful setup has a clear chain: the server accepts localhost, another LAN device reaches the private address, the firewall allows the intended protocol, the router forwards the exact port to a reserved host address, and an external device reaches the public address. Java clients use the TCP listener (normally 25565); Bedrock clients using Geyser require the configured UDP listener (commonly 19132). If any link fails, return to the first layer that does not pass rather than guessing at the public-IP setting.
