If the Samsung DeX taskbar has vanished, open DeX Settings > Samsung DeX and check the taskbar-visibility option first. If the bar is visible but particular icons or controls are missing, determine whether you mean the DeX desktop taskbar or the Samsung DeX icon in a Windows taskbar; they are separate problems. One UI version, DeX mode, and the connected display can also change what you see.
First, identify which taskbar item disappeared
“The DeX taskbar” can refer to two different interfaces. Inside DeX, the taskbar belongs to the Android desktop shown on a phone, tablet, monitor or TV. Open apps appear there and can be selected or managed. A Samsung DeX icon in the Windows taskbar belongs to the DeX-for-PC application on the computer. Fixing one does not restore the other.

Before changing anything, take a screenshot if possible and write down the exact missing item. “No taskbar” requires a different diagnosis from “one shortcut is missing.” Also note whether the item is missing immediately after DeX starts or disappears only after an app opens, a display is switched, or a theme is applied. That timing can help support reproduce the behavior.
Put the DeX taskbar back on screen
- Start Samsung DeX and open Settings.
- Select Samsung DeX.
- Find the option that controls taskbar visibility. Samsung documents a setting that can hide the taskbar; make sure it is enabled to show the bar.
- Return to the DeX desktop and check whether the bar appears.
Samsung changes wording and menu placement between devices and software releases, so the option may not have exactly the same label on your phone or tablet. Look for a taskbar, auto-hide or visibility control within the Samsung DeX settings page rather than assuming a missing bar indicates hardware failure.

If the bar returns but a particular icon is still absent, leave the visibility setting enabled and continue with the identification steps below. Hiding the whole bar and losing one shortcut are not the same symptom.
Check the setting while DeX is active, not only from the phone’s ordinary Android home screen. If you use an external display, make sure the display is awake and showing the current DeX session when you return to the desktop. A setting change made while connected to a different screen may not explain what you see on the problem display.
Check what should normally appear
Samsung’s DeX usage guidance describes open applications as appearing in the DeX taskbar. Selecting an app icon lets you return to that app or manage its window. That does not mean every model displays the same pinned shortcuts, status indicators or quick controls. A tablet running DeX on its own screen can expose different options from a phone connected to an external monitor.
When an open app is missing
- Verify that the app window is open in the current DeX session, not merely installed on the device.
- Check whether the window is minimized, moved to another display or closed.
- Record whether all open-app icons are absent or only one application’s icon is affected.
Do not infer that a missing icon is expected simply because the taskbar is customized. Samsung’s documented behavior covers open apps, while the exact set of permanent controls is device- and version-dependent.
When only a shortcut or control is missing
Compare the current taskbar with the same device after reconnecting to the same display and selecting the same DeX mode. If the item is absent only in one mode, display or user profile, that context is an important part of the report to Samsung. The available documentation does not establish a universal method for manually restoring every individual taskbar control.
Separate a visual change from a functional loss. An icon may still launch the same app after its artwork changes, while a control that no longer appears cannot be treated as a theme change without checking. Note the icon’s position, label (if any), and what happened when you clicked or tapped the surrounding area.

Account for One UI 8.0 changes
Samsung documents several One UI 8.0 behaviors that can make the taskbar look unfamiliar without indicating a fault.
Duplicate app entries can be normal
From One UI 8.0, Samsung says that multiple instances of the same app appearing in the Samsung DeX taskbar are normal behavior. This explains duplicate entries only. It is not evidence that a genuinely missing app icon or control is normal.
Samsung’s wording is specific: “If you notice multiple instances of the same app appearing in the Samsung DeX taskbar, it is normal behavior.” Treat that as an explanation for duplicates, not as a reason to dismiss an empty taskbar or missing status controls. If two entries have different windows, select each one to determine whether they represent separate open instances.
Theming changes app icons, not the whole DeX interface
Samsung says One UI 8.0 themes have partial DeX support: they affect app icons, but not the complete DeX system interface. A changed icon design after applying a theme should therefore be distinguished from an icon that has disappeared. If the entire bar, window controls or system indicators changed, treat that as a separate issue.
Do not assume every One UI version behaves alike
Older One UI releases may use different taskbar layouts, labels or controls. Note the exact One UI version shown in the device’s software information before comparing screenshots or instructions from another release. A procedure written for One UI 8.0 may not map exactly to an earlier version, and a behavior documented for One UI 8.0 should not be generalized to all Galaxy devices.
Software version is more useful than a generic model family name. Two Galaxy devices can offer different DeX options, and a carrier or regional release may present a different menu label. Include the full One UI version when asking for help rather than reporting only that the phone is “updated.”

Check the display-specific configuration
External-display DeX can remember settings separately for each connected display. Samsung’s One UI 8.0 information states that display position, resolution and rotation are stored per display. Consequently, the layout can look different after moving from one monitor or TV to another even when the same phone is used.
- Connect the device to the display where the taskbar problem occurs.
- Open DeX settings while that display is active.
- Review the display arrangement, resolution and rotation for that connection.
- Reconnect to the other display and compare only after recording which settings belong to each one.
This check is especially useful when the taskbar appears clipped, is positioned differently, or seems to have changed after switching between a desk monitor and a television. It does not prove that a missing icon is caused by resolution; it ensures you are troubleshooting the configuration actually in use.
Do not compare a screenshot from one monitor with a screenshot from another as though they were the same profile. Identify each display by model and note whether it is connected directly or through a dock or adapter. The documented per-display behavior explains why a position or rotation setting can follow one screen but not another; it does not establish that every taskbar-control problem is a display fault.

Distinguish DeX desktop problems from the Windows icon
If you are looking for a Samsung DeX icon in the Windows taskbar, use Samsung’s separate DeX-for-PC workflow rather than the on-device taskbar setting.
When using a USB connection
- Confirm that the Samsung DeX application is running on the PC.
- Reconnect the USB cable and wait for the phone’s DeX-on-PC connection mode to be selected.
- Check whether Windows shows the application after it starts. The Windows icon is controlled by the PC application, not by the taskbar-visibility option inside mobile DeX.
When using wireless DeX for PC
- Make sure the Galaxy device and computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the DeX application on the computer.
- On the Galaxy device, select the DeX-on-PC connection mode when prompted or when starting the connection.
Update and compatibility checks
Samsung’s PC troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for an update to the PC application. Compatibility is a separate gate: Samsung says DeX for PC is unsupported on certain newer Galaxy devices and on models updated to One UI 7 or later. The supported-model list can change, so verify your exact device and software release in Samsung’s current compatibility information rather than relying on a generic “Galaxy” label.
A missing Windows icon can therefore be a consequence of the PC app not running, a failed connection, an unavailable DeX-on-PC mode, or an unsupported device. It is not proof that the Android taskbar is hidden. If the PC app opens but no phone connects, record whether the failure occurs with USB, wireless, or both before changing settings.

Use a focused diagnosis instead of random resets
Samsung’s reviewed documentation does not provide one universal restoration procedure for a taskbar that remains absent after visibility is enabled. It also does not establish cache clearing, a factory reset or purchasing a new cable as a general remedy for this symptom. Those actions can create additional work or data risk without addressing the actual cause.

- Locate the missing item. Is it inside the DeX desktop or in Windows?
- Classify the symptom. Is the entire bar hidden, are open-app icons missing, or has one control changed?
- Record context. Write down the Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, DeX mode, connection type, display model and the exact icons involved.
- Apply the matching check. Use DeX taskbar visibility for the desktop bar, display-specific checks for external DeX, or PC app and connection checks for Windows.
- Compare like with like. Reproduce the symptom on the same display and in the same mode before concluding that an update or theme caused it.
Work from the least disruptive check to the most specific one. A settings review preserves your data and quickly distinguishes a hidden bar from a compatibility issue. Avoid changing several variables at once: if you switch displays, update the PC app, apply a theme and change DeX mode together, you will not know which context produced the result.

If enabling taskbar visibility does not restore the bar, or if one control remains missing, provide Samsung Support or Samsung Members with a precise reproduction report. Include:
- Galaxy phone or tablet model and country or carrier variant, if known.
- Android version and exact One UI version.
- Whether DeX is running on the device screen, on an external display or through DeX for PC.
- Whether the session uses Classic DeX or New DeX where both modes are offered.
- Display model, connection method and whether the problem follows one display or every display.
- Whether the whole taskbar, pinned shortcuts, open-app icons or right-side controls are affected.
- When the problem began, including whether it followed a software update, theme change or display change.
- A screenshot or short recording showing the missing item and the relevant DeX settings page.
This information lets support separate a hidden taskbar from a version-specific layout, an external-display configuration issue and a PC compatibility problem. It also avoids applying a reset intended for a different DeX setup.
When sending a screenshot, include enough of the desktop to show whether the bar is entirely absent or simply cropped. For a Windows problem, include the Windows taskbar and the DeX app window, plus whether the phone is connected. State what you expected to see and what actually happened; “icons disappeared” is less actionable than “the bar is present, but the open-app icon for one running app is absent only on the second monitor.”

What not to conclude from a changed taskbar
- A duplicate icon is not automatically a malfunction on One UI 8.0.
- A themed icon is not proof that the entire DeX interface has been replaced.
- A missing Windows icon is not fixed by changing mobile DeX taskbar visibility.
- A different layout on another monitor does not necessarily mean settings were lost; One UI 8.0 can store display settings separately.
- A persistent problem is not evidence that a factory reset, cache deletion or new accessory is required.
The reliable first action is the visibility check. After that, the correct path depends on where the item disappeared, the software version and whether DeX is local, external-display or PC-based.

Can a theme remove DeX taskbar controls?
