On Linux, PHP’s mail() function normally does not connect directly to an SMTP server. It passes the message to a local sendmail-compatible program, which queues the message and handles SMTP delivery. On Ubuntu, the supported implementation is Postfix. Install and configure Postfix, make sure PHP points to its sendmail wrapper at /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i, then test the complete handoff and delivery path.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
A successful mail() return value means the local mail system accepted the message. It does not prove that a remote server accepted it, that it reached the inbox, or that it avoided spam filtering. Production delivery also requires a valid hostname, DNS and reverse-DNS control, sensible relay restrictions, authentication and TLS where a relay is used, and a plan for bounces and reputation.

How PHP mail() works on a Linux server
The Linux and Windows implementations use different configuration models. On Windows, PHP’s SMTP and smtp_port directives identify a remote SMTP service. On Unix-like systems, those directives are not the normal path. PHP invokes a local executable that follows the sendmail command-line interface.
The PHP manual states that the mail functions require PHP to have access to a sendmail binary during compilation. Postfix and qmail provide compatible wrappers, so PHP can use them without an SMTP client library. The usual Unix setting is:

sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i
The -t option tells the wrapper to read recipients from the message headers, while -i prevents a line containing only a period from terminating the message body. Postfix then places the message in its queue, resolves the destination, opens an SMTP connection directly or connects to a configured relay, retries temporary failures, and records the result.
This division of responsibility matters. PHP formats and hands off a message; it does not supply an SMTP server, queue management, retry policy, sender reputation, DNS, reverse DNS, bounce processing, or inbox placement.

Before installing anything, confirm that you control the server and the domain you intend to use in the sender address. For a real deployment, gather:
- Root or
sudoaccess to an Ubuntu server. - A PHP build used by the application, whether that is the CLI binary, Apache module, PHP-FPM pool, or another SAPI.
- A fully qualified server hostname, such as
mail.example.net, and a domain you control. - DNS access for the domain, including the ability to publish the records required by your host and mail design.
- A decision about direct-to-Internet delivery versus a transactional SMTP relay.
- A test mailbox that you control at a different mail system.
Do not accept mail for arbitrary domains during package configuration. A server intended only to send application mail should not become a general-purpose inbound server, and an incorrectly configured relay can be abused to send spam.
Check the PHP SAPI and effective sendmail_path
PHP configuration is SAPI-specific. A value shown by the command-line interpreter may not be the value used by Apache or PHP-FPM. Check each SAPI that will send mail.

After changing a PHP configuration file, reload the SAPI that actually runs the application. Restarting only the CLI process does not reload a persistent PHP-FPM worker.

If mail() is undefined, first verify that the installed PHP build includes the mail functions and that the application is using the PHP installation you inspected. A missing function is different from a delivery failure after handoff.

Install Postfix on Ubuntu
Ubuntu identifies Postfix as its default supported mail transfer agent and it is compatible with PHP’s sendmail interface.
-
Refresh package metadata and install the package:
sudo apt update sudo apt install postfix -
Complete the package configuration prompts. Select the site type that matches the server’s role and enter a mail hostname based on a domain you control. The correct choice for an application-only sender depends on whether the machine delivers directly, forwards through another host, or also receives mail.
-
Keep the generated configuration in
/etc/postfix/main.cf. Review it rather than replacing it with an untested file. The package may also create/etc/postfix/master.cf, which controls Postfix services. -
Check that the service is running:
sudo systemctl enable --now postfix sudo systemctl status postfix
During installation, the configuration wizard may offer several site types. Do not choose a broad configuration simply to make a test work: an Internet-facing host should accept or relay only the traffic required for its role.
Set the server identity and relay policy
Postfix needs a consistent hostname and domain identity. Exact values depend on your DNS design, but the relevant settings are normally in /etc/postfix/main.cf.
| Setting | Purpose | Example or guidance |
|---|---|---|
myhostname |
The server’s fully qualified hostname. | mail.example.net; use a name that resolves to the server. |
mydomain |
The local domain portion used by Postfix. | example.net, if that is the domain you control. |
myorigin |
The domain appended to locally generated addresses. | Set deliberately so system mail does not acquire an invalid host-only sender. |
inet_interfaces |
Addresses on which Postfix listens. | Limit listening addresses when the server does not need inbound SMTP. |
mydestination |
Domains this host treats as local destinations. | Include only domains for which this machine is responsible. |
relayhost |
An optional upstream SMTP relay. | Leave empty for direct delivery, or set the relay hostname and port required by your provider. |
smtpd_relay_restrictions |
Controls which clients may relay through the server. | Keep unauthenticated destinations restricted; permit only trusted networks or authenticated clients. |
Use postconf -n to review non-default settings before reloading:
sudo postconf -n
sudo postfix check
sudo systemctl reload postfix
Never configure an unrestricted relay. A typical safe policy permits mail from trusted local networks and authenticated users, then rejects unauthorised destinations. The precise directives differ between Postfix versions and deployment roles, so preserve the package defaults unless you understand the effect of each change. A sender-only web server usually needs to submit mail locally; it does not need to relay arbitrary traffic from the public Internet.
Verify the sendmail wrapper and permissions
PHP can call mail() only if the command in sendmail_path exists and the web-server account can execute it.

Check the wrapper:
ls -l /usr/sbin/sendmail readlink -f /usr/sbin/sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail -bv [email protected] -
The wrapper is commonly a Postfix-managed executable or link. Do not replace it with an arbitrary script. If the path differs, change PHP’s
sendmail_pathto the installed, sendmail-compatible command. -
Identify the account used by the web server or PHP-FPM pool, then test execution with that account where your security policy permits. A permission error, AppArmor denial, or disabled process execution can make
mail()returnfalse. -
After installing or changing Postfix, reload the service and retest rather than relying on an old queue state.
Write a safe PHP mail() call
Use a fixed sender while validating the infrastructure. Headers must be separated with CRLF characters, and every user-controlled header value must be validated or rejected. The PHP documentation specifically warns that outside data used in headers can enable unwanted header injection.

The fifth argument supplies an envelope sender on systems that support it. Choose an address whose domain is authorised for the server. For form submissions, do not concatenate a visitor’s name, address, or subject directly into From, To, Cc, Bcc, or any other header. Validate addresses with an appropriate email validator, reject carriage-return and line-feed characters in display fields, and prefer a fixed sender plus a validated Reply-To.
Keep header lines reasonably short, provide an explicit From: header, and use a proper MIME declaration when sending non-ASCII or multipart content. The message body can contain newlines, but headers must remain a separate CRLF-delimited block.
Send and trace a test message
-
Run the script from the same SAPI used by the application. A CLI test is useful for isolating Postfix, but it does not prove that PHP-FPM has the same configuration:
php /path/to/test-mail.php -

Look for the remote SMTP response. A
250-class response from the next server indicates acceptance by that server, while a temporary response leaves the message queued for retry and a permanent response creates a failure or bounce.
When mail() returns true, PHP has successfully handed the message to the local sendmail interface. It has not confirmed remote acceptance. The queue and SMTP response are the evidence needed to distinguish local handoff, queued delivery, rejection, and eventual inbox placement.

Choose direct delivery or an SMTP relay
Postfix can deliver directly to recipient domains or submit through an authenticated relay. Neither design removes the need for correct sender identity and DNS, but the operational responsibilities differ.
| Consideration | Local Postfix with direct delivery | Authenticated transactional relay |
|---|---|---|
| Operational ownership | You maintain the MTA, queue, updates, hostname, DNS, reverse DNS, and abuse controls. | The relay operator maintains the upstream SMTP service; you maintain your application and Postfix submission settings. |
| Authentication and TLS | Recipient servers decide whether to trust your connecting host; you must configure the server correctly. | Postfix or an SMTP library authenticates to the relay and negotiates the provider’s required TLS mode. |
| Queue and retry visibility | Local queue and logs are directly available. | You see local submission results plus the relay’s status, event, and bounce information. |
| Bounces and complaints | You must receive and process non-delivery reports and monitor reputation. | The relay commonly exposes bounce and complaint events, but you still need application handling. |
| DNS and reputation | You are responsible for forward DNS, reverse DNS, sender policy, reputation, and blocklist response. | The relay supplies part of the delivery infrastructure, while your domain authentication and sending practices remain your responsibility. |
| Outbound port availability | Direct SMTP may be blocked or rate-limited by the hosting network. | Traffic uses the relay’s required submission port, subject to its limits. |
| Cost and limits | There is no separate relay charge, but administration and resource costs are yours. | Plans, quotas, rate limits, retention, and per-message charges depend on the chosen service. |
Direct delivery is reasonable for a controlled, low-volume environment when the host permits outbound SMTP and you can manage DNS and reputation. An authenticated relay is usually easier when the provider blocks outbound port 25, when delivery analytics and bounce handling matter, or when you do not want to operate a public-facing mail reputation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure SMTP authentication and TLS for a relay
Ubuntu documentation describes SMTP authentication as the mechanism that identifies a client and permits relaying after authentication. TLS protects the connection and credentials in transit. The exact hostname, port, authentication method, and certificate requirements come from the relay operator.
A common Postfix design sets a relay host, enables SASL authentication, and stores credentials in a root-readable map file rather than in application source. The broad pattern is:
relayhost = [smtp.relay.example]:587
smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtp_use_tls = yes
smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt
The bracketed host suppresses MX lookups when that is required by the relay. Port 587 commonly denotes authenticated submission, but use the port and TLS mode specified by the service. Create the credential map with restrictive permissions, run the map-generation command, remove any plaintext temporary file, and reload Postfix. Keep credentials outside source control and rotate them if exposed.
Some relays require a particular envelope sender, certificate validation policy, or modern SASL mechanism. If authentication fails, compare the configured hostname, port, username, password, TLS mode, and required sender domain with the relay’s instructions. Do not weaken certificate verification merely to make a test pass.
Best Value
DNS, hostname, and reputation requirements
A correctly formatted PHP message can still be rejected or placed in spam. For direct delivery, the server hostname should resolve consistently, reverse DNS should point back to an appropriate hostname, and the sending domain should publish the authentication and policy records required by the receiving ecosystem. Your hosting provider may control reverse DNS or restrict outbound SMTP, so coordinate those settings before production launch.
Use a stable envelope sender for bounces, monitor non-delivery reports, and send only to recipients who expect the mail. Rate-limit application-triggered messages, especially password-reset and contact-form mail. Sudden bursts from a new address can damage reputation even when every individual message is syntactically valid.
Troubleshooting by symptom
mail() is undefined
Inspect the PHP version and loaded configuration for the SAPI serving the application. Confirm that the mail functions are enabled and that the installed build was compiled with access to a sendmail-compatible binary. If CLI PHP works but the website does not, compare the CLI and web SAPI versions and configuration files.
mail() returns false
Check the effective sendmail_path, confirm that /usr/sbin/sendmail exists, and verify that the web-server account can execute it. Review PHP and Postfix logs for permission failures, invalid arguments, AppArmor denials, or a stopped service. A malformed command path or a local queue error prevents handoff before any remote server is contacted.
mail() returns true, but no message arrives
Inspect postqueue -p and the Postfix log. A queued message may be waiting for DNS resolution, a temporary remote failure, or a retry interval. A permanent SMTP rejection identifies the next correction. If Postfix reports remote acceptance, investigate recipient spam placement, sender authentication, reverse DNS, domain reputation, and recipient-side filtering. Also check whether the hosting network blocks outbound SMTP.
Headers appear broken or recipients are unexpected
Use CRLF separators between headers, include one valid From: header, and keep the header block separate from the body. Remove carriage returns and line feeds from every user-controlled header value, validate addresses, and never allow a form field to provide arbitrary Cc, Bcc, or additional header lines.
Relay authentication fails
Verify the relay hostname and port, SASL map syntax, file ownership and permissions, username and password, certificate validation, and the required TLS mode. Review the relay’s response in the Postfix log. An authentication failure is not fixed by changing PHP code; it is a Postfix or provider-policy mismatch.
The server becomes an open relay
Stop public submission while correcting the policy. Review smtpd_relay_restrictions, trusted networks, SASL permissions, firewall exposure, and mydestination. Permit only local or authenticated senders and reject unauthorised destinations. Inspect logs for unexpected volume and rotate credentials if abuse occurred.
Production checklist
- Use the PHP SAPI configuration that the application actually runs, not only the CLI configuration.
- Point
sendmail_pathto a real, executable sendmail-compatible wrapper. - Set a deliberate hostname and sender domain that you control.
- Keep Postfix relay restrictions tight and test from the intended web-server account.
- Sanitize every external value used in a mail header and validate recipient addresses.
- Keep SMTP credentials outside source control and protect the credential map.
- Use TLS and SMTP authentication when submitting through a relay.
- Configure forward DNS, reverse DNS, and the domain authentication records required by your delivery design.
- Rate-limit application mail, log message IDs and outcomes without logging sensitive content, and monitor bounces.
- Test both local handoff and remote SMTP results; never treat a
truereturn as inbox-delivery proof.
When PHP mail() is the right interface
mail() is useful when an application already runs on a Linux host with a correctly managed local MTA and needs a small, uncomplicated handoff. It keeps application code independent of a particular relay, while Postfix handles queuing and retries.
Use a maintained SMTP library or a relay-specific integration when the application needs explicit authentication, modern encryption controls, structured attachments, delivery events, bounce processing, rate management, or provider APIs. The library still needs valid credentials and a reachable SMTP service; changing the PHP interface alone cannot solve DNS, reputation, or network blocking.
