Armadillo scutes come from brushing armadillos. Find armadillos in savanna or badlands biomes, use a brush, and collect the scutes they drop. Your main use for six scutes is crafting wolf armor for a tamed wolf; additional scutes repair worn armor. Wolf armor can also be dyed and removed with shears.

The armadillo and wolf-armor features arrived in Java Edition 1.20.5. Bedrock support is commonly listed as version 1.20.80, but no current official Bedrock listing provided a definitive version number. Exact brush yields and the six-scute recipe arrangement can vary by edition, so use the in-game recipe book or a recipe viewer for your edition.

What are Minecraft scutes?
Scutes are an item dropped by armadillos when you brush them. They are not obtained by killing the animal. Scutes have one principal confirmed crafting role: making wolf armor for a tamed wolf. They can also be used to restore some durability to damaged wolf armor.
Do not confuse armadillo scutes with turtle scutes. The two items have different sources and are documented separately. This guide covers the armadillo item used for wolf armor; the uses of turtle scutes are outside the confirmed information for this feature.

Which Minecraft versions include armadillo scutes?
| Edition or version | Status | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition 1.20.5 | Armadillos, scutes and wolf armor were introduced with the “Armored Paws” update. | Open a world running 1.20.5 or newer and check the recipe book. |
| Bedrock Edition | Summaries commonly identify 1.20.80, but no current official Bedrock listing provided a definitive version number. | Check your world’s release version and the in-game recipe book before relying on edition-specific behavior. |
Feature availability can differ when a world is running an older release, an experiment, or a server with a restricted version. If armadillos do not appear and the recipe book has no scute or wolf-armor entries, verify the game version before troubleshooting your tools.
How to get armadillo scutes
1. Find an armadillo
Armadillos spawn in savanna and badlands biomes. Travel through those biome types and look for the animal before spending time crafting equipment. If you are playing on a server, terrain generation and mob settings can affect what you find, so confirm that the area is a normal survival world with animals enabled.
- Search both savanna and badlands rather than assuming one biome is sufficient.
- Bring food, a bed and a way to mark your route so you can return to the same area.
- Keep the armadillo in a safe, accessible spot before brushing it; this makes repeated collection easier.
2. Craft a brush
A brush is made from three ingredients:
| Ingredient | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Feather | 1 |
| Copper ingot | 1 |
| Stick | 1 |
Place the three ingredients in the brush recipe shown by your edition’s recipe book. Brushes wear out quickly, so make at least one spare before beginning a long collection session. Carry extra feathers, copper and sticks if you expect to gather enough scutes for several wolves or repeated repairs.

3. Brush the armadillo
- Hold the brush in your hotbar.
- Face the armadillo at close range.
- Use the normal interact control for your platform: right-click on a mouse-and-keyboard setup, or the equivalent use button on a controller or touchscreen.
- Collect the scute that drops and repeat while the brush has durability.
Brushing is the practical way to obtain scutes quickly. A brush can be consumed by repeated use, which is why a spare is useful. No current official page lists a definitive number of scutes produced by one brushing action: one commonly repeated claim is four in Java and five in Bedrock, but those figures remain unconfirmed. Plan around the six-scute armor cost and verify the yield in your own edition rather than treating either number as guaranteed.
Can armadillos shed scutes without brushing?
Armadillos are also reported to shed scutes on their own. Some guides describe a wait of roughly several minutes, but no current official timing is published. Passive shedding is therefore best treated as a bonus while an armadillo is safely contained, not as a reliable replacement for brushing when you need armor immediately.
How many scutes do you need?
One wolf-armor craft uses six armadillo scutes. Because the per-brush yield is disputed, collect at least six before leaving the biome and more if you need a spare set or expect repairs. A simple planning rule is:

What do armadillo scutes craft?
Wolf armor
Six scutes craft wolf armor in a crafting table. The six-slot arrangement can differ by edition, so do not rely on an unverified pattern copied from another edition. Open the recipe book after obtaining a scute, or use a recipe viewer that identifies your exact Java or Bedrock version. If the entry is missing, check that you are using armadillo scutes rather than turtle scutes and that the world supports the feature.
Wolf armor is intended for tamed wolves. It is not a general player armor item and cannot be equipped on an untamed animal. Crafting the item alone does not protect a wolf until you place it on that wolf.
Putting armor on a tamed wolf
- tame a wolf normally and make sure it belongs to you.
- Place wolf armor in your hand.
- Right-click the tamed wolf, or use the platform’s equivalent interact control.
- Confirm that the armor is visible on the wolf before sending it into danger.
If interaction does nothing, check that the wolf is tamed, that you are holding the armor rather than a scute, and that the server has not disabled the interaction. A sitting wolf can also make positioning awkward; have it stand and try again if necessary.

How to repair damaged wolf armor
Scutes are the repair material for wolf armor. The direct method is to hold scutes and interact with the tamed wolf wearing damaged armor. Each scute restores only part of the armor’s durability, so repeated repairs may be necessary.
Direct repair on the wolf
- Approach the tamed wolf while it is wearing damaged armor.
- Put scutes in your active hand.
- Use the interact control on the wolf.
- Watch the armor’s durability and repeat until it is repaired as far as your scute supply allows.
This method is convenient in the field because it does not require an anvil. Keep the wolf safely away from hostile mobs while repairing; an exposed animal can take damage during the interaction.
Repairing at an anvil
An anvil is another reported repair route. Place the damaged wolf armor in the anvil interface and add scutes as the repair material. The exact experience cost and how much durability each scute restores depend on the game’s normal anvil rules and the armor’s condition. Check the output slot before confirming the operation so you do not spend levels on an unexpected combination.

Can wolf armor be dyed?
Wolf armor can be dyed, but the procedure differs by edition. Java instructions describe combining armor and dye in a crafting grid. Bedrock instructions describe using dye with a cauldron. No current official page specifies a single cross-edition method, so use the method shown by your in-game recipe book and test it with one dye before committing valuable colors.
If a recipe does not appear, verify that you are using wolf armor made from armadillo scutes, not another armor item. Dyeing changes the armor’s color; it does not change the number of scutes needed to craft or repair it.
How to remove wolf armor
Use shears to remove armor from a wolf. Hold the shears and interact with the tamed wolf wearing the armor. The armor should be returned as an item so you can store it, dye it, repair it or equip it on another eligible wolf. If removal fails, confirm that you are holding shears and targeting the armored tamed wolf rather than an unarmored or untamed animal.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No armadillos found | You are outside a supported biome or your version does not include the feature. | Search savanna and badlands, then verify the world’s edition and version. |
| The brush does nothing | You are too far away, using the wrong control, or targeting an invalid entity. | Move closer, use the normal interact button and confirm the target is an armadillo. |
| You ran out of brushes | Brushes have limited durability. | Craft a spare from a feather, copper ingot and stick before another collection run. |
| The wolf will not equip armor | The wolf is not tamed, or you are holding the wrong item. | Tame the wolf first and hold crafted wolf armor, not a loose scute. |
| The recipe pattern looks different | Edition or guide mismatch. | Use the recipe book or a version-specific recipe viewer; do not assume an online six-slot layout is universal. |
| Repair interaction fails | The wolf is not wearing damaged armor, or you are not holding scutes. | Check the armor’s condition and place scutes in your active hand. |
| Dye recipe is missing | Java and Bedrock instructions differ, or the feature is unavailable in your version. | Check the edition-specific recipe book and try the documented crafting-grid or cauldron method for that edition. |
A practical scute-collection plan
For your first armored wolf
- Confirm that your world supports armadillos and wolf armor.
- Collect one feather, one copper ingot and one stick for a brush, plus materials for a spare.
- Travel to a savanna or badlands biome and locate an armadillo.
- Brush it until you have at least six scutes, allowing for the uncertain per-use yield.
- Use the recipe book to craft wolf armor.
- Equip the armor on a tamed wolf and keep several spare scutes for field repairs.
For a kennel or expedition
Multiply the six-scute craft cost by the number of wolves you intend to armor, then add a repair reserve. Store spare brushes and scutes at your base. Because passive shedding timing is uncertain and brushing is faster, do not schedule an expedition around waiting for a particular number of naturally shed scutes.
Important limits and uncertainties
- The six-scute ingredient count is consistent in current game references, but the exact crafting-table arrangement is not.
- Current game references disagree about whether one brush action yields four scutes in Java and five in Bedrock; those values remain unverified here.
- Natural shedding is reported, but its “every few minutes” timing is not established.
- Bedrock 1.20.80 is frequently cited for the feature, but confirm the version in your own installation.
- Armadillo scutes and turtle scutes are separate items; do not substitute one for the other.
When a guide conflicts with your game, trust the recipe book and the behavior of the version running your world. That approach avoids wasting scutes on a pattern, yield or edition-specific instruction that does not apply to you.
