Find pufferfish in warm or lukewarm ocean areas, catch one while fishing, or obtain a rare drop from a guardian or elder guardian. A live pufferfish inflates when you approach and can poison you at close range. Use a water bucket to capture it safely as a bucket of pufferfish. Do not eat the item unless you deliberately want the associated status effects: in the documented Bedrock definition, it gives Poison for 60 seconds, Nausea for 15 seconds, and Hunger for 15 seconds. Its practical value is as the key ingredient for a Potion of Water Breathing and, in some circumstances, for trading with a fisherman villager.

Where to find a pufferfish
Search warm and lukewarm oceans

When exploring, look for the fish swimming in the water rather than assuming every ocean has the same conditions. Biome names and spawning behavior can vary by edition and game version, so treat the habitat guidance as edition-specific when your world does not match the expected pattern.

Bring a water bucket before you begin the search. A live pufferfish reacts to nearby players, so trying to push it into a boat, corner it against terrain, or grab it by hand creates unnecessary exposure. The bucket lets you collect the fish in one interaction and carry it without keeping the live mob loose around you.

Fishing is the simplest route when you are already building a food, enchantment, or fishing setup and do not want to search an ocean biome. Cast a rod into suitable water and keep fishing until a pufferfish is caught. Fishing produces the pufferfish as an item, not as a live swimming mob. That distinction matters: an item can be stored in a chest or used at a brewing stand, while only a live fish can be captured as a bucket of pufferfish.
Fight a guardian or elder guardian
Mojang also lists a rare guardian or elder-guardian drop as a possible source. This is an opportunistic method rather than a dependable farming plan. Guardians create combat and underwater-navigation risk, and no single drop-rate figure is established here. Choose this route when you are already clearing an ocean monument or need guardian materials, not when you need one pufferfish quickly.

How to catch a live pufferfish with a bucket
Use this procedure when your goal is to transport the fish alive, display it, or place it in another body of water.
- Fill a bucket with water before entering the fish’s area.
- Approach slowly and avoid colliding with the pufferfish. Its defensive inflation is triggered by proximity.
- Use the water bucket directly on the live fish. The fish is removed from the water and the item becomes a bucket of pufferfish.
- Carry the filled bucket to the destination. Empty it into an aquarium, pond, or other water-filled space where you want the fish to live.
- Store the bucket of pufferfish in a chest if you are not ready to place it. It is safer to transport than an uncollected fish.
Controls differ by platform: use the normal “use” or secondary-action control for your edition. If the interaction is not registering, check that the crosshair is on the fish rather than on a nearby water block and that the bucket is the selected item.

Why a bucket is safer than pushing the fish
A pufferfish is not passive scenery. As you close the distance, it inflates and can poison the player. A bucket turns the encounter into a quick collection action instead of a prolonged attempt to steer a defensive mob. Keep other players and pets away from the fish while positioning yourself, because accidental contact can still trigger its defense before collection.
What a live pufferfish does
Inflation is a defensive response
The fish normally appears smaller while swimming. When a player approaches, it inflates. This visual change is the warning that you are within its defensive range. Back away rather than trying to inspect the inflated fish at close range.

Mojang describes moving closer as capable of inflicting Poison. The practical rule is simple: do not treat the fish like a harmless tropical decoration. Use a bucket for collection, maintain distance while building around it, and avoid placing a player-sized walkway directly through its swimming area.
Transport and display considerations
Once released from a bucket, the fish is again a live mob and can react to nearby players. Build the viewing side of an aquarium so spectators can see the fish without standing inside its defensive range. Glass provides visibility while keeping the water and the fish contained, but glass does not make direct contact safe if an opening is left in the enclosure.

What happens if you eat pufferfish?
Eating the item is a trap for normal survival play. The official Bedrock stable item definition records nutrition of 1 and poor saturation, so the small food refill does not compensate for the status effects. Its documented effects are:

Stop treating the fish as emergency food and move to a secure location. Avoid combat, deep water, cliffs, and other hazards while Nausea and Hunger are active. Keep a reliable food supply available for ordinary recovery, and use the status-effect cure or survival practices appropriate to your edition. The safest prevention is to keep pufferfish in a clearly marked storage slot rather than alongside routine food.
How to brew a Potion of Water Breathing
Pufferfish’s main practical purpose is brewing. The following workflow uses the standard brewing sequence; exact potion duration and available extensions depend on the edition and the ingredients you add.

- Craft or access a brewing stand and provide its fuel.
- Place water bottles in the brewing stand’s bottle slots.
- Use Nether wart to turn the water bottles into Awkward potions. An Awkward potion is the normal base for this potion.
- Replace the Nether wart with a pufferfish and brew again. The pufferfish converts the Awkward potions into Potions of Water Breathing.
- Move the finished potions to your inventory and carry them before entering an underwater structure or long dive.
Optional brewing adjustments
After making the base potion, you can use the modifier ingredients supported by your edition to change its behavior. Redstone is commonly used to extend a potion’s duration, while other modifiers can alter how a potion is delivered. Check the recipe behavior in the exact edition and version of your world before committing rare ingredients; the pufferfish’s role is the conversion from Awkward potion to Water Breathing potion.
Why brew instead of carrying a fish?
A pufferfish item does not let you breathe underwater. The potion turns the fish into a preparation you can drink before diving, making it useful for monument exploration, underwater construction, and recovery operations where a breathing timer is more valuable than a decorative mob.

Fisherman-villager trading
Mojang identifies fisherman-villager trading as another use for pufferfish. The exact offer, villager level, currency, and availability can vary by edition, version, and trade-refresh conditions. Check the individual villager’s current offer rather than assuming every fisherman accepts the item.
Storage and organization
Keep three forms separate in your inventory system: the ordinary pufferfish item for brewing or trading, a bucket of pufferfish for transporting a live fish, and unrelated fish that are safe to eat. This separation prevents an accidental click on the wrong food slot and makes a brewing run easier to prepare.

There is no documented universal fastest method. Decide based on the outcome you need: choose an ocean search for a living fish, fishing for a low-combat item route, and guardian combat only when that fight is already part of your objective.

Java Edition history
Mojang dates the introduction of pufferfish in Java Edition to version 1.7.2. A current Java world can still differ from older guides in spawning, fishing, or interaction details, so check the version shown on the title screen before following a legacy tutorial.
Bedrock documentation
The warm- and lukewarm-ocean habitat and bucket-capture guidance cited for this guide come from Bedrock Update Aquatic documentation. The exact Poison, Nausea, Hunger, nutrition, and saturation values come from Microsoft’s stable Bedrock item definition. Label those figures as Bedrock values rather than presenting them as a promise for every edition.
Why old percentages are unreliable
Spawn and fishing outcomes depend on edition, version, biome, and game conditions. No independent population statistic or universal drop-rate figure is established here. Treat claims such as “you will catch one after a fixed number of casts” as incomplete unless they identify the conditions under which they were measured.
Troubleshooting common pufferfish problems
“I cannot find any in my ocean.”
- Confirm that the area is identified as warm or lukewarm rather than assuming every ocean variant qualifies.
- Try fishing instead of relying on natural encounters.

- Check that the bottles are water bottles and that the first brewing stage produced Awkward potions.
- Confirm that the pufferfish is in the ingredient slot and that the brewing stand has fuel.
